PRESENTATION OF ROCHE SERVICES & SOLUTIONS OPERATION

APAC

2.1 History of Company

The founder of Roche, Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, was a pioneering entrepreneur who
was convinced that the future belonged to branded pharmaceutical products.

F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Co. was founded at a time when industrial revolution was
changing the face of Europe. On October 1, 1896, at the age of 28, Fritz Hoffmann-La
Roche launched his company as the successor company to Hoffmann, Traub & Co in
Basel, Switzerland. He was among the first to recognize that the industrial manufacture
of medicines would be a major advance in the fight against disease. Since then, Roche
has grown into one of the world's leading healthcare companies.

Pharmacist Carl Schaerges, the first head of research, together with chemist Emil C.
Barell demonstrate the presence of iodine in thyroid extracts. This results in Roche’s
first patent and scientific publications. The launch of Aiodin marks the earliest in a
series of thyroid preparations by Roche. Roche launches Airol, a wound antiseptic
originally developed by Hoffman, Traub & Co. The young company has high hopes
for Airol on the German market. Roche buys land in the nearby German farming
community of Grenzach a builds a small factory to produce Airol.

Roche soon expands its business activities. From 1897 to 1910, the factory in
Grenzach, Germany, is enlarged and the lion’s share of manufacturing moves there.
Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche and his new partner Carl Meerwein waste little time in
building a network of European and overseas agents and subsidiaries. By 1914, Roche

5
has offices in Milan, New York, St. Petersburg, and London, among others. Roche
also produces a non-prescription cough syrup containing its own active ingredient,
Thiocol. The orange-flavoured syrup is an almost immediate success. Launched under
the trademark Sirolin in 1898, the syrup remains on the market for over 60 years.

Assistance from Roche, Max Cloetta produces a pure, standardized digitalis

preparation containing all the cardiac glycosides of the purple foxglove leaf. The
preparation is free of unnecessary ingredients and displays a uniform efficacy. Roche
launches the preparation under the trademark Digalen in 1904. Digalen proves to be
exactly what the medical profession has been looking for and it stays on the market
until 1964. The analgesic and hypnotic Pantopon (1090) and Sedobrol (1912), a drug
for epilepsy and nervous disorders, are also released as Roche grows and expands its
portfolio.

Hermann Sahli, head of medical department at the University Hospital in Bern,

contacts Roche research director Carl Schaerges, Sahli proposes a combination of all
opium alkaloids that offers advantages over the individual compounds. Discussion
with Sahli and extensive studies done under Schaerges result in the analgesic
Pantopon, which is launched in 1909. From 1897 to 1914 Roche expands worldwide,
employing more than 700 people in Basel, Grenzach, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, St.
Petersburg, London, New York and Yokohama. During this period, Roche strives for
strong cooperation between academic circles and commercial developers. Until 1915,
all Roche innovations result from such cooperation.

The First World War has devastating repercussions for Roche. The German boycott of
its products, Basel’s isolation from its plant in Grenzach, Germany, the loss of the
company’s Russian market and assets in the revolution of 1917, and sizeable foreign
exchange losses combine to create a financial crisis. In response, Roche is transformed
legally into a limited company. Additionally, Roche bemoans the death of founding
father and visionary Fritz Hoffmann in 1920. A glimmer of hope arises with the classic

6
study by Markus Guggenheim of biogenic amines, which enhances Roche’s standing
in the scientific community.

in the scientific community.

Roche managed to overcome the crisis under the leadership of chairman Emil C.
Barell. The company experienced an unexpected upsurge spurred by its vitamin
production, which made the return to former prosperity possible. Roche is able to
expand once more and starts its strong commitment to the US-American market with
first investments in New York and Nutley. Vitamin output increases and new
production locations strengthen Roche’s position as one of the main producers of
vitamins. To avoid a strong dependency on vitamins, Roche intensifies pharmaceutical
research. Between the early 1950s and mid-1960s pharmaceutical research is
extremely diverse, with a portfolio of pharmaceuticals ranging from antidepressants
and antimicrobials to agents for cancer chemotherapy. During this period, Roche’s
researchers discover a compound of the benzodiazepine class that sedates without
causing drowsiness.

Propelled by the success of the benzodiazepines, Roche diversifies across the entire
spectrum of healthcare. In Switzerland and the United States, bioelectronics
departments are set up to develop electronic medical instruments. Rocom and
Medicovision are the company’s forays into medical publishing. The acquisition of
Dr. R. Maag AG, a plant protection company, reflects Roche’s growing involvement
in agrochemicals. In Nutley, USA, a new diagnostics department is established. This

7
period also marks the start of Roche’s involvement in basic biomedical research. The
company establishes the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, the Basel
Institute for Immunology and the Nippon Research Center in Kamakura, Japan. A
chemical accident at an Italian subsidiary is a major setback.

Roche begins to tighten its organizational structure and moves towards creating
separate business units. Additionally, corporate activities are consolidated through
acquisitions and divestments. After the corporate realignment, Roche operates with
four core business divisions: pharmaceuticals, vitamins and fine chemicals,
diagnostics, and flavors and fragrances. Through its commitment to research and
innovation, Roche continues to make steady advances in drug therapy that will replace
more treatments that are expansive and shorten hospital stays.

Roche ranks among the world’s leading healthcare companies with its expertise in two
core businesses, which is Diagnostics and Pharmaceuticals. Combined with its
strength in biotechnology, the company paves the way to the future of healthcare with
innovations in areas such as personalized healthcare. The increased focus on
innovation and biotechnology lead to important advances in diagnostic techniques and
medicines aimed at molecular targets. As a result, many diseases can be detected
earlier and treated more specifically. The full integration with biotech pioneer
Genentech in 2009 follows acquisitions of other key players in life science research,
gene sequencing and tissue diagnostics. These strengthen Roche’s access to innovation
and new technologies and drive its commitment to more targeted treatments that,
ultimately, make personalized healthcare a reality. Roche is a leading healthcare
company with headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. as shown in Illustration 2.1.

scopes. Other than supporting users, also assists team member on finishing certain
tasks or projects. Some of the tasks that assisted such as prepare and set up new joiners
laptops including install printer and software, set up iPhone and iPad, documented
SOP, cross-checked asset by employee, set up and dismantle events, meeting room
testing, report laptop cases to HP and resolved assigned tickets in ServiceNow and
others that will be discussed later.

14
3.4 Introduction of Task

Before being assigned to IT On-Site team which located at level 14 The Pinnacle
Sunway, intern need to report to HR department on the first day of industrial training
started on 22th July 2019. During the first week as intern in IT On-Site team, the task
is getting to know the people, specialization and position of the employee in IT On-
Site team. The key people include:

 Head of Department
 IT Site Manager
 IT On-Site Engineer

The most important task of the first week is to learn and study about Standard
Operating Procedure (SOP). SOP governs about the future task and what to do, what
to handle and how to escalate, resolve and close a certain problem, case or situation.
There are a few compulsory daily tasks need to be doing such as set up and dismantle
events, prepare and set up new joiners laptop including the accessories and resolved
assigned tickets in ServiceNow as well as assist end user issues. During the first month
in IT On-Site team, a few tasks was trained by teammates such as get to know with
ADUT system, DSMT system, Active Directory and Pulse Secure, Cross-check
between laptop list and DSMT system for 750++ laptops within 3 days, do online
training and prepare and set up new joiners laptop.

15
Illustration 3.2: ServiceNow

On the second month, start to assist end user issues when users come to IT Kiosk. IT
Kiosk is a place where users can come when they have problems with hardware or
software. Then, IT On-Site team will solved their problems. Next, set up hardware for
events and town hall based on organizer’s requirements and dismantle after events are
finished, resolved assigned tickets in ServiceNow and set up iPhone and iPad including
install Mobile Iron for users to synchronize the phone with Roche email, create PDF
form and update device request list after distribute the devices to users. The senior is
supervising all tasks. The cases are separate based on employee specialization.

On the third month, learn how to assemble and disassemble laptops including install
RAM and SSD in laptops. Intern also documented SOP for reimage laptop part. Intern
was given a main task which is did meeting room testing for all 48 meeting rooms in
Roche Services & Solutions Operation APAC. The testing including test Jabra
speaker, HDMI display, webcam and cable lock, then the result of the testing has been
recorded in Microsoft Excel list. Next, report laptop cases to HP and assist vendor as
well as record the laptop cases details in Microsoft Excel list. Intern also handle
reimage & set up 32 laptops for new joiners within 5 days and distribute all of them to
new joiners. In this month, a few events were held and intern involved in wellness
week, town hall and team lunch.

16
Fourth month marked the adaptation in doing assigned tasks. Case are getting varied
and not singular nor linear, intern is being taught to learned whatever they can in
remaining months. Since intern in charge of reimage and set up new joiners laptop,
one issue was found during reimage in new HP 840 G6 laptop which is Intel
Management Engine Firmware and can handle the issues until resolved. Other
knowledge is learn how to use BenQ InstaShow for event set up and create BenQ
InstaShow Guideline for meeting rooms. In this month, intern was given a main task
which is cross-checked and created PDF form assets by employee for 750++ users.
Regarding this task, intern need to make sure the assets that owned by users are
synchronized with the record list. Users need to sign the PDF form as prove they
owned the assets such as laptops, iPhones, iPads and MacBook.

Intern specialization is strengthening in the fifth month where the potential in intern
are enhance with specific specialization. For example, intern able to dismantle events
alone when the teammate are not around. Intern also involved in many events set up
in this month, which is improved the technical skills. Besides, intern able to assist users
and solved their problems using the skills that intern have as well as improved the self-
confidence and communication skills. Intern also involved in a few events held in this
month which is Code4life with Google, Roche SSCKL Year End Party 2019, Global
Consumer Experience (GCX) team lunch and Collaboration Technology Road Show.

Sixth or final month passed, intern is being treated same level as permanent worker.
Although, the intern is still carry around the intern title, they are slowly gaining trust
and can be giving opportunity to handle the tasks such as troubleshooting user and
resolved case with minimize supervision from the senior. The last month will show
the intern true potential as they can be a permanent worker or not. Being six month
teach many things although not all of the experiences is good, naturally they always
be an obstacle that need to be “adapt, improvise and overcome”, it is normal in life.

17
3.5 Task Description

3.5.1 Reimage and Set Up Laptops for New Joiners

3.5.1.1 Task Specification

Since Roche Services & Solutions Operation APAC still in growing

process, so every week got new joiners start working in the company.
IT On-Site will received the tickets for prepare their laptops and
accessories such as laptop bags, mouse, headsets and laptop chargers
including create PDF form for them to sign as confirmation they
received the devices. All laptops and accessories must be ready one
week before the join date.

3.5.1.2 Implementation and Solution Method

The first thing need to do is check new joiners ID whether it is ready or

not yet in Active Directory. If it is not ready yet, laptops cannot be
prepare yet and need to wait until the ID is ready. If the ID is ready,
intern start to reimage the laptops using Roche’s image and install the
printer and all required software. After set up the laptops, all laptops
and accessories need to put in the laptop bags and reserve the bags by
write new joiners’ name on each bags.

3.5.1.3 Results of Task/Project

On the day of new joiners coming, intern distributed all the bags that
contain laptop, mouse, laptop charger and headset to new joiners. They
also need to sign PDF form prepared by intern, which is written their
assets details including serial number and laptop number as prove they
already collect the devices. The record is really important to company

18
because all details of asset by employee in there and IT On-Site need
to take care of the assets very well.

3.5.1.4 Advantage, Disadvantage and Suggestion for Task

Improvement

The advantage of this task is the knowledge gain by getting to know

many applications and which applications are available in installation
portal. Exploration is the big term for this task for which many of the
applications require for intern to explore and discover new thing, so
that can help users when they have issues with the application in the
future.

The disadvantage of this task is when new joiners’ ID is not ready yet
even though join date is past and the situation become chaos when the
ticket raise by HR is the same day with new joiners join date and also
when new joiners join the company early than exact join date without
informing IT On-Site. This situation affected IT On-Site daily
workflow plan.

Recommended task improvement is HR need to raise ticket one week

early before new joiners join date. It is to avoid any chaos and make the
process run smoothly.

3.5.1.5 Knowledge and Skills Gain

A lot of knowledge gain through reimage and set up laptops for new
joiners. First, intern get to know the required software that need to have
in all Roche laptops as well as install printer. Next, able to detect one

19
issue in new HP 840 G6 laptop, which is Intel Management Engine
Firmware and resolved it with update BIOS before reimage the laptops.
Intern also managed to settle reimage and set up all 32 laptops for new
joiners within 5 days.

3.5.2 Meeting Room Testing for All 48 Meeting Rooms in Roche Services
& Solutions Operation APAC

3.5.2.1 Task Specification

Since there are many users complaint about meeting rooms equipment,
intern has been assigned to do this task which is need to test HDMI
display, webcam, Jabra speaker and cable lock whether all of the
equipment are available and working fine or not in each meeting room.
If it is not working, intern need to troubleshoot the issues until solved.

3.5.2.2 Implementation and Solution Method

Before doing meeting room testing, intern need to bring HP 840 G3

laptop, HP 840 G5 laptop and HDMI cable as well as HDMI and cable
lock in case there is missing HDMI cable and cable lock in meeting
room. When the TV shows the display, it is mean the HDMI cable is
working fine. Next, for Jabra speaker testing, cable connected to laptop
and test with play song in YouTube. It is working when Jabra speaker
produce the sound. Webcam also need to connect cable to laptop and
open camera in laptop. It is working fine if the camera can detect both
front and back camera shows the view.

20
3.5.2.3 Results of Task/Project

Illustration 3.3: Result of meeting room testing

All meeting rooms testing settled within 7 days. HDMI cable or cable
lock lost can be identified within the meeting rooms testing and has
been replaced. Results of meeting rooms testing has been recorded in
Microsoft Excel list.

3.5.2.4 Advantage, Disadvantage and Suggestion for Task

Improvement

Advantage from this meeting room testing is get to know how to set up
and dismantle meeting rooms and know to use Cisco Webex Board in
certain large meeting rooms because it is different with normal TV.

Disadvantage is when intern need to follow meeting rooms availability,

surely need to do the testing until night because meeting rooms always
busy and full with other users booking. Next, when HDMI cable and

21
cable lock are missing from the meeting room, intern need to shuttle go
to store room to take the cables if the standby cables is not enough.

Recommendations is can put cable tie for the cable lock and others
cable, so that the cables is hard to disappear or remove from meeting
room.

3.5.2.5 Knowledge and Skills Gain

Intern get new knowledge in set up and dismantle meeting room very
well. Other than that, intern also learn how to troubleshoot the issues
regarding the hardware problem until solved.

3.5.3 Cross-Checked and Create PDF Form Assets by Employee for

750++ Users

3.5.3.1 Task Specification

The purpose of cross-checked and create pdf form assets by employee

is to do confirmation between asset by employee list and users’ asset
such as laptops, iPhones, iPads and MacBook. Some user’s PDF from
is missing, so their data cannot be detect.

3.5.3.2 Implementation and Solution Method

This cross-checked was doing with 750++ asset by employee and PDF
form. Intern need to search user’s previous PDF form as a prove they
own the assets but if the PDF form is not found, need to create new
PDF form for users and make confirmation with them if they really

22
owned the assets, then they need to sign the PDF Form for IT On-Site
record. The details of the laptops also updated in DSMT system which
is in laptop’s details for record purpose.

3.5.3.3 Results of Task/Project

Cross-checked and create pdf form assets by employee for 750++ users
done within one month and all assets are sort accordingly by user’s
name. Illustration 3.4 below shows the results of cross-checked and
create pdf form assets by employee for 750++ users.

Illustration 3.4: Cross-Checked and Create Pdf Form Assets by

Employee for 750++ Users

23
Illustration 3.5: DSMT System

3.5.3.4 Advantage, Disadvantage and Suggestion for Task

Improvement

The advantage from this task is all asset by employee were organized
and can know who’s owned the assets. All missing assets also can
detected through this task. Disadvantage through this task is still use
Microsoft Excel for asset by employee list and PDF form for user to
sign. For improvement, it is easy if all data and user signature just in
one applications or system. When data records in the system, it is easy
to detect who’s owned the assets instead of using manual PDF form.

24
3.5.3.5 Knowledge and Skills Gain

During doing this task, the time management skills is improved because
need to finish this task but at the same time also need to assist end users
issues and prepare laptops for new joiners. The time management and
multitasking skills is important during this phase to produce a great
work.

25

of the kind professional environment and observation on top management decision to
resolving issue arise. Bigger company employs hierarchy system for which
experience, hard work and smart decision will be noticed by the top management thus
making climbing the ladder a bit easier.

Explore new challenges. For 6 months being here is not an easy task, monumental of
ingenuity, decision making and knowledge are compulsory to every day’s work.
Working by all mean not a linear experience, some of the challenges arise and differ
to whatever learned from UniKL. Working environment is a magnitude of different to

4.2 Recommendation

As a trained intern, several suggestions and suggestions aimed at enhancing the

achievement of Industry Training objectives in particular as well as the goals of Roche
Services & Solutions Operation APAC in general. Indeed, the training of this industry
is quite beneficial to the students.

27
There are various benefits gained after the completion of industrial training, especially
in terms of theoretical issues that can be practiced at the training ground. With this,
can see the true state of the work environment.

In addition, there is a proposal that can be submitted:

 Intern should get their main task schedule during first day of internship
and admin rights if need to use some system. It is easy for intern to plan
their schedule between responsibility as student with UniKL and
company because intern need to update their logbook and documented
internship report. Time management is important for intern.

I hope that my suggestions will enhance the quality of the existing Industrial Training
and be more beneficial to the trainers for the next generation. Finally, close
collaboration and collaboration between the university and the company is needed to
form a relationship that will benefit the company and the university itself.
