STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I always wanted to be a civil or a mechanical engineer to build large buildings and structures or cool cars
and engines since my high school days. It all changed when I was preparing for engineering entrance
examinations. While wasting time on the internet I found out about something called Google Drive by
Google. My curious mind begged me to learn about it. It amazed me how my files can be stored at a
remote location and accessed from my ancient Pentium 4 computer in seconds. Those few months I spent
my time reading and researching about cloud computing, servers, data centers, programming languages,
video game development, processors and what not. From Moore’s Law to Turing Test, I had wasted a lot
of time on the internet reading about computer science without gaining any solid skills or knowledge.
This was the time I realized that I should take advantage of this newborn interest and convert it into real
knowledge and skills. I made a decision to enroll in a Computer Science degree.

Therefore, I joined Jamia Hamdard University for a B.Tech degree in Computer Science. During the first
2 years, I studied subjects like C Programming Language, Data Structures, Algorithm Design and
Analysis, Computer Architecture, Opertating Systems and Java Programming Language. After gaining
enough knowledge and some computer programming skills I interviewed for internships in the industry to
get an experience of how computer science is applied in real world.

I interned at National Informatics Center and worked with a team on a module named ‘XML based data
Aggregation Scheduling System’. On the server side, we used JDBC with MySQL to fetch data from
database tables and converted it into XML text using Java’s DOM manipulation in a servlet class. We
then used a Java scheduler program on client side to schedule POST requests to the server. This project
was to be completed in 1.5 months but because of the ever changing client requirements it took us 3
months to deliver it. During the course of the internship, I realized that this was the real world application
of software development life cycle, where requirements keep changing. This internship helped me
become a more efficient team player and I also developed the skill of proper documentation of software.

For my final year dissertation, I researched about digital image processing and applied the knowledge to
develop an android application in which I used image processing algorithms along with OPENGL 2.0
API for android. The end product was an android app which can be used to edit photographs and also
apply new enhanced color filters to them without compromising the quality.

Apart from academics, I have actively participated in extra-curricular activities, which I believe are
essential for the overall development of an individual and also a necessary refreshment for the mind and
body. I have been the coordinator of the Editorial team twice for my college’s annual techno-cultural
festival – NERDZ. I have also played in various soccer tournaments in both school and college, and also
regularly organized the intra faculty football tournament in college. Last year, I helped my mother to set
up a computer lab in a small school she runs for children from weaker sections of the society. During the
last semester of college I spent my free time training the children there about using a computer for typing
and searching the web. All these activities has induced in me a spirit of competitiveness, qualities of a
leader and made me understand the importance of imparting knowledge.

After graduating, it was time for me to enter the professional world, therefore I joined Goalwit
Technologies in August 2017 as a Backend Developer. During my time there, I was responsible for
working on web development projects using PHP and various DBMS’.
3 months ago, in November 2017, I joined Virtuos Solutions as an Application Developer. I work here on
the development, configuration and customization of Oracle Service Cloud. I am responsible for
developing API’s, configuring CRM and developing the frontend for the clients. I have been working
with PHP, JavaScript, C#, HTML and Bootstrap to develop CRM solutions.
I see the bachelors program as merely a basic introduction to the various regions and sectors of the field
and I believe that a Master degree in this program will not only help me achieve a deeper understanding
of this field but also prepare me for the challenges I will be facing in the professional world. Therefore, to
deepen the knowledge and fully develop the skills I have gained in my Bachelor’s program, through
internships, my projects and industry experience, I plan to attend the Master’s Program in Computer
Science. I am confident that I will perform well in the program as I have strong mathematical and logical
skills along with decent computer science knowledge.

I learnt about the MS in Computer Science program at University of Massachusetts Lowell through the
University website. Not only are the University and the program, both, well rated but also the highly
adaptive nature of the program makes it fitting for my needs. Courses from Network and System
Infrastructure interest me greatly. This, combined with the experienced teaching staff and the state-of-art
infrastructure, makes the MS in Computer Science program at University of Massachusetts Lowell highly
suited to my requirements.

I bring along with myself logical and quantitative knowledge, useful practical experience, an eagerness to
learn more, a penchant for teamwork and leadership, and a zest for challenges. I hope to gain an in-depth
knowledge of the various branches of Computer Science, and the skills required to build a profession in
this field. I wish to build long lasting relations with my teachers and my fellow students.

I hope my qualifications and background are found suitable to pursue the MS in Computer Science
program at University of Massachusetts Lowell.
