SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

ACTIVITY # 4.12

TEACHER: CHARLITO B. BOISER MAJOR SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS SCHOOL: UNION NHS

LEARNING AREA: MATHEMATICS 8 CODE: M8GE-IVi-1 GRADE LEVEL: 8 DURATION: 1-2 HOURS
LEARNING COMPETENCY: Illustrate how to calculate the QUARTER: 4 TEACHING DATES: March 14-15, 2019
measures of variability
1. CONTENT/TOPIC MEASURES OF VARIABILITY: Standard deviation and Variance of data
A. Knowledge: Find the range and average deviation of ungrouped data.
2. OBJECTIVES B. Skill: Describe range and average deviation of ungrouped data.
C. Attitude: Show eagerness in doing the activities.
D. Values: Display cooperation with others.
3. LEARNING RESOURCES LM in Math 8
A. Introductory Activities: (10 minutes)
 Word recognition:
4. PROCEDURES Absolute - constant in value
Data - factual information
Dispersion - distribution of values
Distribution - giving out
Random - without pattern
Standard - level of quality or excellence
Stimulant - quickening
Tendency - general inclination

 Motivation: Group activity

 Review: Review on the measures of central tendency: range and average
deviation
 Presentation: Presenting the topic which is measures od central tendency:
standard deviation and variance.
B. Activities: (10 minutes)
Concept notes:
 Standard Deviation - The most important measure of dispersion. It
differentiates sets of scores with equal averages.

Where SD is the standard deviation;

x is the individual score;
𝑥̅ is the mean; and
N is the number of scores.
In computing the standard deviation:
A. Find the mean.
B. Find the deviation from the mean (x-𝑥̅ ).
C. Square the deviations (x-𝑥̅ )2
D. Add all the squared deviations. Σ(x-𝑥̅ )2
E. Compute the standard deviation (SD) using the formula
1
 The variance (∂2) of a data is equal to 𝑁. The sum of their squares minus the
square of their mean. It is virtually the square of the standard deviation.
Formula:

Examples:
Compute the standard deviation and the variance of the set of test scores: {39,
10, 24, 16, 19, 26, 29, 30, 5}.
Solution:
∑𝑥 39+10+24 +16+19+26+29+30+5 198
For the mean: 𝑥̅ = = = = 22
𝑁 9 9
X X-𝒙̅ ̅ )2
(X - 𝒙
39 17 289
10 -12 144
24 2 4
16 -6 36
19 -3 9
26 4 16
29 7 49
30 8 64
5 -17 289
̅ )2 = 900
∑(X - 𝒙
̅ )2
∑(𝐗 − 𝒙 900
SD = √ 𝑁
=√ 9
= √100 = 10
The standard deviation of 10 means most of the scores are within 10 units
from the mean.

̅ )2
∑(𝐗 − 𝒙 900
Its Variance: 𝝏2 = = = 100
𝑁 9
C. Analysis: (10 minutes)
“How can I make use of the representations and descriptions of given set of data in
real-life situations?”

D. Application: (10 minutes)

Board Work Activity:
Suppose two classes achieved the following grades on a math test, find the
standard deviation and variance.

Class 1: 64, 70, 73, 77, 85, 90, 94

Class 2: 74, 75, 75, 76, 79, 80, 94
E. Abstraction: (10 minutes)
This lesson is about finding the measures of variability particularly in
measuring the standard deviation and variance.

F. Generalization:
This lesson was about measures of variability of grouped data. The lesson
provided you opportunities to describe on how to solve standard deviation and
variance of the given grouped data. Moreover, you were given the chance to apply
the given important notes on how to solve the standard deviation and variance of
the given grouped data and to demonstrate your understanding of the lesson by
doing a practical task.
G. Assessment: (5 minutes)
WORKING IN PAIRS
A. Compute the standard deviation and variance for each set of numbers.
1. (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
2. (7, 7, 8, 12, 14, 14, 14, 14, 15, 15)
3. (12, 12, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 15, 19, 20, 20)

5. (23, 25, 27, 27, 32, 32, 36, 38)
B. The reaction times for a random sample of nine subjects to a stimulant were
recorded as 2, 6, 3, 4, 9, 3, 6, 4 and 5 seconds. Calculate standard deviation
