Veinland/DCU module

The DCU module is a modular I/O system for digital and analogue signals.
Output communication to rhe VDR can take place via NMEA 0183, using one WIM input.
Each system consists of a control unit, MCU, and at least one module AIM, or DIM.
The configuration of the hardware is automatically detected and generates the appropriate
NMEA telegram.
The module needs to be connected to 24V DC.
With parameters the baud rate, the telegram header and the output frequency of the telegrams
can be set. (see Veinland manual)
The DCU/Veinland module is tested according IEC 60 945 and has a approval of
Germanisher Lloyd.
For adjustments and (other) settings please read the manual from Veinland as written by the
manufacturer.

Implementation and Configuration of the Veinland/DCU Module in the NW4000 VDR

set up.

The Veinland/DCU Module;

DCU module without cover, mounted are from left to the right;
1xMCU; 6x DIM; 2x AIM

Inside the cover you´ll find info regarding adjustments!

Commissioning the DCU

Use an input from the serial adapter into the WIM and connect the MCU output ports 7 Tx-
and 8 Tx+.
In this example it is connected into WIM nr 2 position 2 port 1.
Make sure that record mode (record this channel) is activated.
Check if the NMEA data is coming in by selecting the page channels, NMEA channel
monitor.

The first string is giving information about the analogue adapter(s) and inputs.
$ PHDWAI, 4, 1023,1023,509,508*1A
In this line you see the amount of inputs (4) and their settings.

In this set up we have 2 AIM modules mounted.

Each AIM has 2 inputs.(pin1,2 / 5,6)
The first AIM is set up from +/- 20mA and the second for +/- 10V.
Make sure the jumper settings in the AIM modules are made correct.
Make measurements on the inputs during sea trial to calibrate.
Example: 9V is 50degrees rudder angle to starboard.

The measurements can be written down in the special download/upload program for the
Veinland Module, VDR_VL.
With this software you can commission each input from the Veinland module.
After finishing you can easily upload the information into the HSS via the network cable
plugged into BCU or PSU.
This information can also be downloaded from the HSS into the VDR_VL program.
Don’t forget to save your configurations in your laptop as well!

The second NMEA string provides data about the status from the digital inputs.
For ex. $ PHDWAI, 6, 40, 8F, FF, 70, 0F, 50*12

6 stands for the amount of DIM’s placed in the module.

40 means binary 00000010.
This is the first digital adapter on the left side.
In this example you can visually see the second LED from the left is activated, however you
have to read the binary code from the right to the left (see pict 1)!
When we look at the 3rd DIM you can see that all LED’s are lit; FF=11111111
Picture 1.

You can easily check out the status of the LED’s from all DIM’s by watching the Veinland.
During sea trial or during testing procedures you can visually check the status of the
LED’s.(Picture 1)
Make sure if your dealing with a NC or NO contact and mention the meaning of the LED-
status in the VDR_VL software, see example below.
Make sure you write down the right information for each input into the software.
And put the connected inputs into record mode.
When finished upload the software into the HSS via file menu.
Be sure you also save the file in your laptop for later use!

The status of each incoming channel can be read out in the Netwave Player.

Example of raw NMEA data in the Netwave Player.

After installation provide a list with all channels mentioned in the 4000-90 document.
See example below.

Voyage Data Recorder

On December 2004 the MSC adopted amendments to Regulation 20 of SOLAS chapter V (Safety of Navigation)
on a phased-in carriage requirement for a shipborne simplified voyage data recorder (S-VDR).

Existing cargo ships shall be fitted with a VDR / S-VDR as follows:

 in the case of cargo ships of 20,000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before 1 July 2002, at
the first scheduled dry-docking after 1 July 2006 but not later than 1 July 2009;
 in the case of cargo ships of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 20,000 gross tonnage
constructed before 1 July 2002, at the first scheduled dry-docking after 1 July 2007 but not later than 1
July 2010; and
 Administrations may exempt cargo ships from the application of the requirements of subparagraphs .1
and .2 when such ships will be taken permanently out of service within two years after the
implementation date specified in subparagraphs .1 and .2 above.

Note:
*1: Veinland Module NMEA explain:
$PHDWDI 4,00,00,00,00*1E
HDW: Header – parameter programmable through the setup which is stored
in the EEPROM. Allowable maximum of 3 characters.
4: Number of following arrays with telegram.
00,00,00,00: 8-bit data word in hexadecimal notation, MSB left.
1E: NMEA Signal Format postfix.
The explain for 00:
80: The CH1 is used
40: The CH2 is used
20: The CH3 is used
10: The CH4 is used
08: The CH5 is used
04: The CH6 is used
02: The CH7 is used
01: The CH8 is used
In analysis, the MSB is given on the left side. This means that the output value
for this module is 80 when LED H7 is illuminated. When H0 is active, this
corresponds to a value of 1. Therefore the range per DIM is between 0 and FF.
The order of the values in the telegram corresponds with the order of the DIMmodules
in the DCU- system. $PxxxDI,a,D1,D2,…*LRC CR LF D1 = value of the first
and closest module beside the MCU, D2 comes from the next and so on. It doesn’t
care if module other’s than DIM types may are placed between the DIM
For example 1:
1. used CH1 at Veinland Moudle position 1:
$PHDWDI 4,80,00,00,00*16
2. used CH5 at Veinland Moudle position 3:
$PHDWDI 4,00,00,08,00*16
For example 2:
If used one more Channels, the value will increase.
1. used CH1 and CH4 at Veinland Moudle position 1:
$PHDWDI 4,90,00,00,00*16
2. used CH2 on position 1,and CH1 & CH2 on position 2, and CH1 & CH7 & CH8 on
position 3:
$PHDWDI 4,80,C0,83,00*16
