GENDER & THE SELF

1. OVARY- located in the pelvic cavity which produces the ova (egg cells) and secretes the female
hormones progesterone and estrogen.
2. OVUM- female reproductive cell or egg cell.
3. FALLOPIAN TUBES- Extend from the uterus to the ovaries and carry the egg from the ovary to
the uterus.
4. UTERUS- Thick-walled, pear sized and shaped muscular organ which nurtures the fertilized ovum
that develops into a fetus and carries it until birth.
5. CERVIX- Lower part of the uterus which directs the sperm into the uterus during sexual intercourse.
6. VAGINA- Elastic passageway from the cervix to the outside of the female body which receives
the penis and it is where the baby passes during childbirth.
7. VULVA- External genital organ of the female which contains the vaginal opening.
1. PENIS- primary male sex organ
2. TETES OR TESTICLES- responsible for the production of sperm cells and testosterone, the male
sex hormone.
3. VAS DEFERENS- tube that connects the testes with the urethra. Passageway of the sperm from
the epididymis to the ejaculatory ducts for ejaculation.
4. SCROTUM- sac that carries the testes. Protects the testes , responsible for maintaining the
body temperature below the normal body temperature.
5. SPERM- the male sex cell. Produced in the testes and passes from the vas deferens to the urethra.
released through the semen- the fluid that carries the sperm.
6. PROSTATE GLAND-Gland that surrounds the upper part of the urethra. It secretes the fluids that
protect and nourish the sperm.
7.EPIDIDYMIS- Long coiled tube located at the back of testicles that stores and carries the sperm.

EROGENOUS ZONES stimulation of which leads to sexual response.
Stimulation an individual’s erogenous zone is considered an act of intimacy.

limitations as responsible individuals.
LUST, ATTRACTION AND ATTACHMENT
1. LUST- desire for sexual gratification which is inherent to every human being
2. ATTRACTION-intense attention given to a desired partner. High degree
=(emotional union) Driven by chemicals and hormones like:
a. ADRENALINE-released by the body for fight or flight
b. DOPAMINE- ignites an intense rush of pleasure when released. It increases energy, less
less need for food and sleep and focused attention to partner.
c. SEROTININ- “ falling in love” hormone. makes a person think of his or her desired
partner.
3. ATTACHMENT- characterized by couples to stay together.

(feeling of comfort & security)

Vasopressin- form monogamous bond
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Can be
contracted thru unprotected sex with someone who has STD.
1. HIV/AIDS- Human Immunodeficiency Virus/
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
• unprotected sex
• contaminated needle exchange
• pregnancy
2. GONORRHEA- bacterial infection in the mucous membranes (eye,
throat, genitals and other organs)
Secretion of yellowish white fluid from penis and urination
accompanied by fever, abdominal pain both for men & women
• 3. Syphillis-not just transmitted through sexual activity but by merely
kissing an infected person. Causes sores on mouth, vagina, anus,
rectum. It may lead to paralysis, crippling, blindness, heart disease,
brain and organ damage, dementia and even death.
• 4. Genital Herpes- Viral infection that causes blisters on genitals.
Causes itching and burning sensation on the skin. There is no cure for
herpes- only reduction of severity.
• 5. Genital warts-warts that are caused by human papilloma virus HPV
that grows in the genital or anal area.
• 6. Chancroid- bacterial infection that causes sores or ulcers on the
genitals. (head of penis or labia majora of women)
• 7. Pubic Lice- very small parasites that infect the genital area which
are spread through sexual contact. Parasites are attached to the pubic
hair and may even be transmitted with contaminated clothes,
bedding and other items.
• 8. Scabies- skin condition that is caused by infestation of tiny mites that
cause itching and rashes. Transmitted thru sexual intercourse and close
body contact.
• 9. Trichomoniasis- infection caused by a parasite. May cause itching, genital
soreness and irritation, painful urination and unusual yellowish or greenish
discharge.
• 10. Molluscum Contagiosum-A skin condition characterized by pearly white
or slightly pinky lumps. When squeezed, release a white cheesy fluid. Can
be transmitted through skin to skin contact and sharing of clothes.
• 11. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease- not sexually transmitted but a
complication resulting from STIs especially chlamidia and gonorrhea.
• 12. Chlamydia- does significant damage to the human reproductive system
for it can infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, eyes and throat. It’s
accompanied by foul discharge and painful urination and sexual
intercourse.
CONTRACEPTION METHODS

2. What are the influences of family in your development as an
individual?
3. Think of a time when you felt you were your “true self.” what
made you think you were truly who you are during this time of
your life?
4. Following the question above, can you provide a time when you
felt you were not living your true self? Why did you have to live a
life like that? What did you do about it?
5. What social pressures help shape your self? Would you have
wanted it otherwise?
6. What aspects of your self do you think may be changed or would
you like to change?
