IV. Procedure
A. Motivation
1. Play the Verb Rap Song to review the definition of verbs, or actions.
2. Ask students to participate by acting out the verbs in the song.
3. Use the video to recall the definition of verbs, and introduce subject/verb agreement.
B. Discussion
 The subject and verb in a sentence must agree in number.
- Number refers to whether the word is singular or plural. If the subject is singular, the verb
must be singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.
1. A singular subject agrees with a singular verb; a plural subject with a plural verb.
Example:
a. Miley Cyrus (attend, attends) the Academy award.
b. Percy and Annabeth (is, are) one of the characters of The Lightning thief.
2. Indefinite pronouns like everyone, anyone, someone, somebody, one, each one,
everybody, neither and either take the singular form of a verb.
Example:
a. Someone (say, says) Marian Rivera is by far a better actress.
b. Everyone (admire, admires) the products of the contestants.
3. Many, others, several, few, a few, a number when used as subjects require plural verbs.
Example:
a. Many (believe, believes) that the gods live in Mt. Olympus.
b. A few (has, have) patience to wait for the results.
4. The verb agrees only with its subject. Words between subject and verb do not affect the
number of the subject (The Law of Non-intervention).
Example:
a. The gods, not Kris, (punish, punishes) the evil.
b. The pupils, together with the teachers, (is, are) attending the school play.
5. Compound subjects joined by correlatives like either-or, neither-nor, not only-but also
require singular verbs if both subjects are singular, and plural verbs if both subjects are
plural.
Nota Bene: The Law of Proximity suggests that when using correlatives, the verb agrees
to the nearest subject.
Example:
a. Either Arachne or Athena (get, gets) the weaving competition.
b. Neither the Greeks nor the Romans (know, knows) the results of the contest.
c. Not only Allan but also Helen (expects, expect) Athena to win.
6. Some nouns which are plural in form but are regarded as singular in meaning are usually
regarded as singular.
a. Politics (is, are) an art which they excel.
b. Mathematics (is, are) a puzzling subject to the parents.
7. Collective nouns are used with a singular verb when these nouns refer to one unit.
a. The crew (work, works) harmoniously.
b. The crowd (is, are) very eager to see the rock star.
8. The expression a number when used as a subject of the sentence, takes plural verb. The
number if used as a subject of the sentence takes singular verb.
a. The number of the visitors (is, are) disappointing.
b. A number of foreigners (visit, visits) Sagada daily.
9. Titles of songs, poems, movies and any other literary genre used as a subject will always
take a singular verb.
a. “The Lord of the Rings” (is, are) written by J. R. R. Tolkien.
b. Hips don’t lie (has, have) become an international hit.

C. Generalization:
1. What are the rules governing subject-verb agreement?
2. Why are they important?

D. Activity 1. Read the story below and try proofreading it whether the sentences are
observing correct Subject-Verb Agreement.
The Story of Arachne
In Greece, there live a young girl named Arachne. She are gifted in weaving. Her
works is a wonder to behold that people compare it with that of Athena, the goddess of
wisdom and the weaver among the Olympians. Others claims that the goddess perhaps
thought the art of weaving to Arachne. “Athena! The goddess cannot even match my
glorious tapestries!” boastfully said Arachne.
The goddess on high are outraged when she heard that a simple peasant girl
declared her work to be superior. Disguised as an old peasant, she go to the hut where the
maiden lives.
“Don’t be so harsh young lady. You may be talented for a mortal but you should
shows respect for those who are greater or even weaker and older than you”, warned the
old peasant.
“Like the great Athena I suppose. I am tired of hearing her name. If she are so
wonderful, let her come and compete with me,” strongly retorted Arachne.
“A contest you shall have,” said the goddess after showing her true self.
Both sets up their looms. Athena weave a magnificent tapestry. She wove an olive
tree beside the face of Zeus hurling a thunderbolt to those who anger the gods, a warning
to Arachne. The proud girl fail to see the meaning behind the majestic tapestry. With great
confidence, Arachne approach her loom. Athena admire the beauty and skills of the girl’s
work. However, the scene depicted in the tapestry displeased her. She tear the tapestry
into shreds and turned to the frightened girl.
“I warned you once, I warned you twice but your foolish pride is too great. You shall
be punished,” Athena said.
She turn Arachne into a tiny eight-legged creature. Athena, however, allowed
