LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS - GRADE I

USING EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION (SKILL-BASED)

I. OBJECTIVES : At the end of the 40-minute period pupils will be able to:

1. Instructional Objective : Subtract one-digit numbers with minuends through 18;

2. Expressive Objective : Appreciate the value of sharing.

II. SUBJECT MATTER : Subtracting One-Digit Numbers with Minuends through 18

A. References :Teacher’s Guide for Grade 1, Math (Quarters 3 &4) – Unit 3, pp. 1-3

Teacher’s LM, Math-1, (Quarters 3 & 4), pp. 1-6

B.Materials :Counters (sticks, stones), flash cards, picture of boy holding marbles, cutouts,
marbles enough for the class

C.VALUES :**Sharing

A. Concept to be clarified:

 Subtraction is a process of taking away objects from a set.

III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES:

1. Drill using flashcards (subtract one digit numbers with minuends through ten)

3. Introduction of the invited elder/community leader.

B. INTRODUCTION:

1. Posing the Problem:

Si Ben aron 9 ka hulin. Inghatag naan ang 4 ka hulin


ngadto sa kanaan amigo. Pila ra kuman ka hulin ang
yabilin kang Ben?

1. Sinu ang gahatag ng hulin sa kanaan kaupod?
2. Pila kabuok ang hulin na aron kang Ben?

4. Solving the problem

 Role Playing
Two pupils act as Ben and his friend. Ben has 9 marbles. He gave the 4 marbles to his
friend. The remaining group members count the number of marbles left in Ben’s hand.
Teacher asks how many marbles left?

5. Values Integration

C. MODELLING:

1. Teacher models/demonstrates (using concrete objects )

2. Teacher generalizes as she models using cut outs.

3. Discussion on subtracting one digit numbers with minuends through 18.


 Teacher represents the given situation subtraction fact by drawing the same
objects.
 Takes away the objects representing the subtrahend by crossing them out.
 Counts the objects which are not crossed out and says

One Pupil draws 18 marbles and cross out 9. Then, other members of the group count
the remaining marbles. Teacher asks how many marbles are not crossed out? What is
your answer?

E. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Pupils answer subtraction exercises individually with minuends through 18.

IV. EVALUATION:
Study the set of pictures and the number sentence. Find the difference.
Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answers on your paper.
