Providing a holistic education is about developing our school children the
best that they can be. The administrators, the teachers and the community need to
work hand in hand to improve our school facilities to support the delivery of this
holistic education for our children..

This is the reason why the Department of Education implemented the 2019
Brigada Eskwela with the theme “ Matatag na Bayan Para sa Maunlad na
Paaralan” from May 20-25, 2019. The Brigada Eskwela is a week-long cleaning-up
and beautification of the schools in the Philippines. This a what we call
“bayanihan” wherein the teachers, the students, the community, government and
non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders work together to improve
our school and make it ready for the new school year.

Aside from its beautification and greening efforts, Bankal Elementary

School focused on disaster preparedness and mitigation. Calamities and other
untoward incidents will be handled effectively if school personnel, learners and the
community are well- oriented on said issues. Furthermore, pupil security and safety
are given utmost importance through the removal of school hazards and prevention
of accidents which may occur in the school premises.

Bankal Elementary School 2019 Brigada Eskwela opened with a short

program headed by our ever supportive school head Mr. Julieto T. Rosales to
welcome the participants and give the importance of having this activity especially
for our children. All the teachers were introduced and were given their
assignments. The grade V teachers together with their Instructional Leader were
assigned to closely monitor the attendance from May 20-May 25, 2019. Volunteers
from the “Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program” came daily and also the Brgy.
summer job volunteers who spared their time to support this brigade. Everyday,
there were accomplishments and that was a great relief for all the school personnel
to see the school getting ready for the opening of classes on June 3, 2019.

May 20, 2019 was the first day of our Brigada Eskwela. Based on the School
Work Plan and the Physical Facilities Need Assessment Report prepared by the
School Head, assignments were given to the different groups of stakeholders. Day
one focused on environmental clean-up, beautification and segregation. Volunteers
from the PTA, barangay officials, LGU, church personnel and the police and AFP
attended and did their share of the works.

The volunteers who are very active and enthusiastic, started trimming of the
plants and trees. This was done to make our school grounds safe and secure for our
children. Clean-up, beautification and segregation/disposal continued until the
second day while others are already starting on the repair works they have to do in
their assigned areas.

On the second day, the school’s GPTA spearheaded by Mr. Generoso C.

Repolidon constructed the school’s MRF dubbed as the Segregated Waste
Depository from the proceeds of the donation given by the teachers and parents.
They also started to repair and repaint the picket fences which adorned the plant
boxes of the entire school. Ground maintenance and cleaning up and structuring
of the classrooms continued as well as teachers replaced their worn-out room
structuring and outdated IM’s for new and effective ones.

Declogging of comfort rooms and cementing of some parts of the school

ground was done on the third day. Repainting of classrooms was also undertaken
as well as the replacement of worn-out electrical connections.

On the fourth day, members from the FAMEA donated construction

materials for the repair of the school stage. These materials were gladly utilized by
the parent-volunteers in their repair work of the said structure. Volunteers from the
Iglesia ni Cristo, Mactan Chapter also under took repainting of classrooms and
clean-up activities. Chairs and other classroom furniture were also repaired by their
volunteers.

Through the overwhelming support of the volunteers, classrooms are well-

restructured and spruced up for the new school year. School facilities are now in
good condition ready to serve a whole new batch of learners for S.Y 2019-2020.

A closing program and honoring of active participants and donors was done
on Saturday, May 25, 2019, the last day of the week-long activity. The School
Head, Mr. Julieto T. Rosales expressed his most sincere gratitude to all the
teachers, parents, Barangay and City Officials, PTA Officers and diverse volunteer
groups who have extended their wholehearted support to the school’s endeavor.
The spirit of volunteerism, unity and teamwork made the program’s
implementation a successful one.

The success of Brigada Eskwela is a solid proof of the commitment of the

school’s stakeholders to continuously improve its learning environment. This is
evident in the increased support from the Barangay Officials, business sector and
other education stakeholders. This translated into a renewed passion on the part of
the learners and their teachers in coming to school with a new mindset and
eagerness to learn.

The Brigada Eskwela implementation does not end during this week-long
affair. The school’s administration holds a fervent hope to sustain the said effort
throughout the school year. The community also aims to improve the student
participation and reduce drop-outs as more learners are encouraged to be in school
and experience its wonderful setting and ambiance away from the usual deplorable
conditions of their home environment.

And last but not the least, to prepare the school for future disasters and
accidents, the administration strengthened its Disaster Risk Reduction
Management System. A DRRM Office was put up with the help of the school PTA
who gave necessary funding for the said structure.
Pupils and teachers were oriented on School Disaster Management to
prepare and educate them in ensuring safety in the school campus. This was given
emphasis in the school in its intensified campaign for disaster resilience and
mitigation.

Data basis of pupil enrollees for S.Y 2019-2020 were created in preparation
for future emergencies for them to be easily located and accounted for at the times
during emergencies. Emergency kits, first aids and basic supplies are procured and
made available in the DRRM Office. Evacuation areas and classrooms are
determined with the corresponding evacuees from the seven sitios from the
barangay namely, Casia, Ticgahon, Mahayahay, Firecrash, Pool, Kauswagan and
Bankal Proper. Evacuation Plans and other relevant school signages are updated to
serve as locators during emergencies.

In closing, all aspects related to pupil accommodation, safety and security

are being addressed with the BE Program’s enhanced implementation. With the
school aiming for a high percentage of sustainability, the goals of giving holistic
education to our pupils will surely be realized.
