INTRODUCTION

a) Introduction to the project

Derivatives trading has become an important economic activity all over the world. In
India too, derivatives trading is quite active. The evolution of derivatives and the
commencement of trading in derivatives are of recent origin. These developments became
popular only during the latter half of the twentieth century. In India, derivatives trading
began much later, only during the new century.
Commodity derivatives and financial derivatives are the two major classes of
derivatives traded globally. Forwards, futures, options and swaps are the types of
derivatives available in the derivatives market. Even though derivatives trading is quite
active, the awareness of derivatives is limited to the market participants. Among the wider
public, there is a lack of understanding about derivatives and their trading practices. There
is, in fact, more misunderstanding than proper understanding about the role of derivatives in
the economic system.
This research is conducted with a view to see the awareness about derivatives
market among the various investors and it will help them to find out which one is profitable
to them for investment purpose.

b) Project Title
A study on financial derivatives including options and futures.

c) Objective behind conducting this project

i) Primary objective
- To find the profit/loss position of futures buyer and seller and also the option
writer and option holder
ii) Secondary objective
- To analyse the operation of futures and options.
- To find out the best option of investment for investors among selected scrip.
- To study various trends in derivatives market
iii) Scope of the study
The study is limited to “Derivatives” with special reference to futures in the Indian
context and the Inter-Connected Stock Exchange has been taken as a representative sample
for the study. The study can’t be said as totally perfect. Any alteration may come. The study
has only made a humble attempt at evaluation derivatives market only in India context.

Analysis is depending upon past performance but past performance can’t give us
future prediction.
