Delightco Corp.

Abstract

Delightco Corporation is a first generation family business, a distributor dry goods and grocery
products of large foreign and local manufacturers. He partly owns several real estate
development companies as well. The father started the business after a good grounding for over 2
decades of knowledge and experience in the field of distributorship and wholesaling business
together with his first wife which together they both built. The business had reached its peak and
is still expanding. Together with its growth are the challenges and problems that go with singly
managing the day-to-day operations putting a heavy burden to 1 person, the owner. One of the
pressing concerns as lamented by the owner is the lack of policies on employee misdeeds
resulting to conflict with clients and suppliers, which takes much of his time to resolve. The
thought of help from his own family, two of his older children in his first marriage, now
graduating in college, are one option that he considered. However, preparation for succession
and transition planning is presently at bay when the widowed father married a much younger
wife who is now part of his business management team.

ERD Vegetable Dealership
Abstract

ERD Vegetable Dealership is a first generation family business and a retailer of vegetables that
started as a small stall in Sta. Elena, Marikina market in the year 1989. In 2000, the business
became a vegetable dealership while retaining its original business name and expanding its
product lines to baking products, noodles/pastas, spices/seasonings, quail eggs, condiments,
plastics, and oil. The mother alone started the business coupled with the values of hard work,
confidence, openness to suggestions and criticism finding business opportunities as it comes and
seizing them to push and expand. She soon gained a good reputation and continuously attracted
customers and clients. The children while growing were exposed to the day-to-day operations
and were given chores to help, roles and responsibilities to perform and be accountable for. The
main concern at the moment is the preservation and expansion of the business. Of the five
children, the eldest daughter, who is said to be the mothers’ right hand is the most able to
succeed in the business.

CSB Leasing & Property Management
Abstract

CSB Leasing and Property Management Corporation is a second-generation family business

founded in 1930. The company started leasing and renting property and later on acquired vast
land of family properties. Business and wealth has been passed on from the first generation to
second generation. The grandchildren are expected to take over and run the business as soon as
possible since the family matriarch is already nonagenarian and her children are in their senior
years as well. A Family Constitution and Family Business Council are being drafted by one of
her granddaughters at the moment. However, her parents insist that a “last will and testament”
be crafted while their grand matriarch is still relatively healthy and lucid. However, a more
urgent concern is the need for legal counsel to work on the legal management of land squatters,
collection from non-payments of leased properties, crafting and management of legal contracts,
resolving inheritance issues, inventory of properties and wealth, wealth preservation and in
professionalizing the property management operations.

Family Business Case Abstract:

Chi Square Properties
Abstract

Chi Square Properties started from house rentals in 1995 to building commercial establishments in the
year 2000 and is currently progressing as a real estate development business. It is also the wish of the
parents to hand-over the business to their 2 daughters, who after all will inherit the family’s wealth.
However, the growing business is not without problems. The owner complained of leases that not only
abscond but also looted the fixtures of the establishment. Mostly, the problems lies in not being able to
properly screen the lessees and not legally strict enough to follow the contract leading to abuse on the side
of the client. These problems made the parents firmer in their resolve to prepare and train their daughter
to be competent in managing and administering the business operations and its financial health.

People Corporation
Abstract

People Corporation is a first generation family business that provides skilled

manpower resources to service establishments. The business, however, is not
dynamic, as it should because the spouses/owners are also both employed. The
daughters, while not expected to take over the business, felt the compelling need to
professionalize the business because there is a high potential for growth in this
industry. More so, the 2 daughters are very much encouraged to continue not only
to help their parents but also to develop their careers alongside it.

Gravels Construction Inc.
Abstract

Gravels Construction Company is a first generation family business that has

established itself for over a decade in building infrastructures. The 3 children who
are recent college graduates and their chosen profession in architecture,
engineering and finance will definitely boost the growing operations. The parents
are grooming all the children to take on major roles and functions in the company.
However, there is a growing need to train and upgrade construction skills of the
employees in order to carry out tasks more efficiently and effectively. The engineer
son prefers to work quietly in designing; the architect son is good in people skills;
and the daughter is efficient in office administration and finance. The parents are
looking on these competencies in their succession planning.
