INSIGHTS CHAPTER 1: UNDERSTANDING PHILOSOPHY BY DOING IT
The first chapter that was discussed was an introduction to Philosophy. It was done to
familiarize and introduce us to the topic itself. Understanding philosophy by doing it, is
literally understandable for you just have to apply the things that was discussed in order to
think and act as a philosopher. First, the discussion is about Holistic Development wherein a
person should have a self-fulfilment and should learn things about his/her physical, mental,
social, emotional, and spiritual growth.
The discussion was also about how philosophers think or how they perceive things in life.
There were plenty of quotations and pictures that will teach you how to see things like
philosophers. These quotations and pictures made me see things differently and not just
focused on one thing.
Chapter one is also about seeking wherein you are attaining a specific goal in life. In here you
will learn the philosopher’s way of seeking and achieving their goals. It is about learning the
difference between seeking and finding.
Bird’s eye view. You have to see things from above in order for you to appreciate the beauty
in it. We also talked about the difference between the view from the above and the view from
the actual ground.
Of course before knowing more about philosophy and philosophers, we must go on basics.
Philosophy being the love of wisdom. Philosophers being the lover of wisdom. It can be
defined in different ways. Science because there is a systematic investigation wherein it
follows a certain procedure. Natural light of reason because they do not use laboratory
instrument to investigate, instead they use natural capacity to think. Philosophers study all
things and so on.
We also discussed about the branches of Philosophy. Metaphysics which explains parts of our
experiences. Ethics which is the study of nature and moral judgements. Epistemology is about
nature, sources, limitations and validity of knowledge. Logic is about reasoning. Lastly is
Aesthetics wherein it is how you see things beautifully. Making useful thing to become more
beautiful.
The discussion went well and it is actually fun. I learned a lot like how philosophers think and
how do they perceive things in life. I also learned the basics of philosophy, its meaning and
branches. There is a certain part that really caught my interest because I can say that I learned
a lot from it just by merely listening.
The quotation part is something that is worth remembering and something that taught me
lessons. It may be hard to think like a philosopher but learning how they do makes me want to
strive to think and see things like them. I learned that in order to understand things, you must
be able to remember each thing clearly. You must not forbid yourself to experience pain
because you’ll never know how hard something is unless you experience it. Experience is the
best teacher. No one can truly understand you because it is you only who could understand
yourself.
I also learned that a certain situation in your life may happen over and over again unless you
learn something from it. If you do not keep the things that you learned in your mind, your
hardships will be worthless. Learning to think positively always can change a lot in your life
because being a positive thinker falls into a lot of positive outcomes.
The picture part is also something that will make you think twice and make you think like a
real philosopher. The pictures that were shown are usually double meaning. What you see is
not what you really get. I learned to perceive things differently and not just in my own way in
order for me to understand more things.
I learned not to underestimate myself for I am more than what I think I am.
3.) How would the discussion help me to become a better person/ABM student?
Learning how philosophers think made a big impact to me. I think I can apply the things that I
have learned as a student and as a person. Thinking like them can make a positive lifestyle.
What I have learned from the discussion will help me a lot to become more that what I am
expected to be.
The discussion may help me on how I see things in life by using the philosopher’s way of
thinking, seeking, and perceiving things in life. As a student and as a person, I am easily
discouraged about how people think of me and so I’d give up things without thinking its
consequences. I can apply the things that I have learned by being positive all the time. Not
minding how people think of me can make my life a lot better because I am not being affected
by them. Keeping my thoughts positive all the time can make a big change in life.
I can apply what I have learned as an ABM student by standing up whenever I fall from my
mistakes. Learning to stand up and do it all over again. As a person, it is so hard to trust
people because they will either trust you too or betray you. And so, I can apply what I have
learned by knowing that no one can really save me but myself. People will turn their backs at
you and can’t do something about it. All you have to do is know how capable you are of
knowing your feelings and trust yourself that you can surpass the challenges in life even if
you are alone. You do not need someone to comfort you as long as you know your
capabilities.
I can also apply the lessons that I have learned from the discussion as a person and ABM
student by seeing thing from the bird’s eye view. I can be more motivated to achieve my goal
if I see things in the other way. Seeing the beauty from the above which represents the gaol
can make me strive harder to attain it. If you just focus on the hardships or pain, you will not
reach your goal because you cannot see the beauty of the result. You cannot see the beauty of
the process.
I can be a better individual if I see myself bigger. I see a motivated and a bigger person in
front of the mirror. I may be a cat now but I am seeing a better version of myself in the future.
I am very sure that I will become what I dreamt of becoming.
The discussion was something to remember because it taught not only the lesson but also the
application. There were life lessons that I can definitely apply as my life goes by.
4.) Conclusion
Therefore I conclude that the first chapter is useful to familiarize ourselves about what is
philosophy and how does philosophers think. The lesson can help individuals to perceive
things differently. The first ever discussion wasn’t boring at all because you just really
need to listen in order for you to understand and remember each thing.
It was easy for me to cope up because it was relatable and I can apply the things that I
have learned in my life. It wasn’t hard for me to follow because each slide is being
discussed thoroughly.
Philosophy may sound easy to understand but it is really unless you know how to listen
attentively. They say philosophers think too much wherein they forget God already but I
think I can apply what I have learned from their perspective and I can still remember
God’s teachings. You just have to be balanced in life. There so no middle in yes or no.
