LESSON OUTLINE

Introduction Let us get to know what is Communicative

Competence
Communicative competence typically refers to how well
someone is able to communicate with others.
This process includes two major components: the message
used to deliver an idea, and the meaning that is actually
delivered by that message.
Communicative competence is important for anyone who
wishes to be able to communicate clearly, especially public
speakers and people learning a second language.

Motivation Activity 1: Word Search

 The facilitator will instruct the class that the
activity is individual.
 The facilitator will task each student to locate the
given words in the grid, running in possible
directions, horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Instruction/ Discuss Speech Act

Delivery Speech act are the speaker's utterances which convey
meaning and make listeners do specific things (Austin,
1962). When saying a performative utterance, a speaker is
simultaneously doing something.

There are three types of speech act;

1. Locution (Utterance)
- speech act occurs when the speakers performs an
utterance, which has a meaning in the traditional
sense.
2. Illocution (Intention)
- speech act is the performance of the act of saying
something with a specific intention.
3. Per locution (Response)
- speech act happens when the speaker says has an
effect on the listener.

Activity 2: Charades
 The facilitator will assign the class into 2 groups.
 Each group should choose one member to act out the
given word or phrase. S/he must not speak the given
word or phrase but must only act it out.
 The task of the rest of the members is to guess or
identify what is the word or phrase being act out.

will be the winner of this game. - 7Cs: Critical
Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration

connected on the lesson.
Practice Activity 3: Act Your Speech
 The facilitator will assign the class into 5 groups.
 Each group will be given a specific speech.
 Each member of the group will be tasked to act the
given speech. (e.g. I am hungry in a sad emotion)
 The group must convey the correct and appropriate
act to the given speech.
Enrichment Short Participative Session
 The facilitator will task each group exercise in order
to stimulate discussion and provide student
feedback.
Guide Questions:
 What is the difference between a rant and a
speech?
 Which do you prefer, speaking or listening? Defend
your answer.
Evaluation Short Essay
 The facilitator will task each student to construct a
short essay about the importance of speech act.
Values Speaking helps us transfer what we want to be heard but
Integration: communication helps us to connect what we want to be
understood. Speech act is significant for it makes our words
and thoughts be clear and valid. When we communicate we
give ourselves a chance to listen.
