4.1 Introductory Activity
ENGAGE

Present the situation below to engage the students in the lesson.

Situation:
15 minutes
Helen Hyun, a research professor at Cebu Normal University, wishes to study the effect
of a new mathematics program on the mathematics achievement of students who are
performing poorly in math in elementary schools throughout Cebu High Schools. Because
of a number of factors, of which time and money are only two, it is impossible for Helen
and her colleagues to try out the new program with the entire population of such
students. They must select a sample. What is a sample anyway? Are there different kinds
of samples? Are some kinds better than others to study? And just how does one go about
obtaining a sample in the first place?

1. Build the curiosity of the students by engaging them in answering the situation
above.
2. Randomly call 5 students and let them share their own way of solving the
problem.
3. Guide the thinking of the students into the lesson sampling and sampling
techniques.

4.2 Activity
EXPLORE

1. Discuss to the students what is a sample and a population.

2. Discuss to the students the random sampling methods

3. Illustrate to the students the “systematic sampling,” “convenience sampling,”

and “purposive sampling” by giving them diagrams.

4.3 Analysis EXPLAIN

Give the students time to analyze and share their thoughts on their members and let
15 minutes them choose what Systematic Random Sampling they want to apply on their study. Let
each group share and give them extra points for participating.
