Correct Answer

SP = 5750, Profit = 15%

∴ 115% of CP = 5750
100% of CP = 5750 * 100 / 115 = 5000
130% of CP = 5000 * 130 / 100 = 6500
120% of SP = 5750 * 120 / 100 = 6900
% Profit = (6900 - 6500) * 100 / 6500 = (400/6500) * 100

If 4 examiners can examine a certain number of answer books in 8 days by

working 5 hours a day, for how many hours a day would 2 examiners have to work
in order to examine twice the number of answer books in 20 days.

7 1/2

8
Correct Answer
9

Here we take the work done by first 4 examiners as 1.

M1 × D1 × H1 × W2 = M2 × D2 × H2 × W1
4 × 8 × 5 × 2 = 2 × 20 × x × 1
x= 8 hours
Alternate Method:
Persons Hrs Work
4 5 x 8=40 hrs 1
i.e. 2 persons will consume 40 x (4/2) = 80 hrs for 1 work.
Now, 2 persons will need 2 x 80 hrs = 160 hrs for 2 work
so number of work hrs. required for 20 days are 160 hrs.
Each day they'll work for 160/20= 8 hrs. per day

A florist was asked to make a bouquet worth exactly Rs 1000 with 100 sticks of
roses of three colors – Pink, Yellow and Red. While Pink roses cost Re 0.50 a stick,
Red roses cost Rs 10.00 per stick and Yellow roses cost Rs 50.00 per stick. How
many Red roses did the florist use in the bouquet?

1
Correct Answer
80

None of these

Let P be the number of pink sticks, Y be the number of yellow sticks and R be the
number of red sticks.
P + Y + R = 100 ----------------> (i)
0.5 P + 50Y + 10R = 1000 --- > (ii)
From 1, R = 100 – P – Y
Image not present 0.50P + 50Y + 10(100 – P – R) = 1000
9.5P = 40Y or P/Y = 40/9.5 = 80/19.
i.e. pink roses = 80, yellow roses = 19
Therefore, the florist should use 100 - (80 + 19) = 1 red stick.

B + 200 = 3.5(A + 200)
A + 400 = 1.25B - 500
B + 200 = 3.5A - 700
Solving these two equations,
A - 1.25B = -900
-4.375A + 1.25B = -1125
3.375A = 2025
A = 2025 / 1.375 = 600
B = 3.5(600 - 200) - 200
B = 1400 - 200 = 1200

Sashi can do a piece of work in 25 days and Rishi can do it in 20 days. They work
for 5 days and then Sashi goes away. In how many more days will Rishi finish the
work?

10 days

None of these
Correct Answer
14 days

12 days

Sashi can complete/ day = 4 pieces

Rishi can completed = 5 pieces
Both can complete/day = 9 pieces
In 5 days they can complete = 5x9 = 45 pieces
Remains = 100 – 45 = 55 pieces
No.of days required for Rishi to complete the work = 55/5 = 11 days.

Alternate Method:
Let the total work is completed in (5+x) days.
Sashi can complete the work in 25 days,so 1 day work of Sashi is 1/25.
Rishi can complete the work in 20 days so 1 day work of Rishi is 1/20.
Sashi works for five days with Rishi then left.
So, 5/25+(5+x)/20=1
(5+x)/20 = 1 - 1/5 = 4/5
5+x = 4*20/5 = 16
x = 16 - 5 = 11
Therefore, Rishi requires 11 more days

Present Past
Possible condition: "If I am" "If I was"
Counterfactual condition: "If I were/was" "If I had been"
"As if" and "as though" were originally always used to introduce counterfactuals, but are now
often used in "looks as if", "sounds as though", etc., to introduce things that the speaker actually
believes ("It looks as if" = "It appears that"). In such cases the present indicative is often used.
("As if" and "as though" are exceptions to the above table in that they take the past subjunctive,
not the present subjunctive, for counterfactuals in the past. The past tense of "If he were a fool,
he would mention it" is "If he had been a fool, he would have mentioned it"; but the past tense of
"He talks as if he were a fool" is "He talked as if he were a fool." "He talked as if he had been a
fool" would mean that he seemed, not foolish, but regretful of earlier foolishness.

PASSAGE:
The invention of the turbine by Frank Whittle in England and Hans von Ohain in
Germany in 1939 signalled the beginning of jet transport. Although the French engineer
Lorin had visualized the concept of jet propulsion more than 25 years earlier, it took
improved materials and the genius of Whittle and von Ohanin to recognize the advantages
that a gas turbine offered over a piston engine, including speeds in excess of 350 miles per
hour. The progress from the first flights of liquid propellant rocket and jet-propelled
aircraft in 1939 to the first faster-than-sound (supersonic) manned airplane (the Bell X-1)
in 1947 happened in less than a decade. This then led very rapidly to a series of supersonic
fighters and bombers, the first of which became operational in the 1950s. World War II
technology foundations and emerging Cold War imperatives then led us into space with the
launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the placing of the first man on the moon only 12 years
later— a mere 24 years after the end of World War II.
Now a hypersonic flight can take you anywhere in the planet in less than four hours.
British Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, and the air forces of several other countries are
going to use a single-engine cousin to the F/A-22 called the F-35 joint Strike Fighter. These
planes exhibit stealthy angles and coatings that make it difficult for radar to detect them,
among aviation’s most cutting-edge advances in design. The V-22 known as tilt-rotor, part
helicopter, part airplane, takes of vertically, then tilts its engine forward for winged flight.
It provided speed, three times the payload, five times the range of the helicopters it’s meant
to replace. The new fighter, F/A-22 Raptor, with more than a million parts, shows a perfect
amalgamation of stealth, speed, avionics and agility.
It seems conventional forms, like the Predator and Global Hawk are passé, the stealthier
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are in. They are shaped like kites, bats and boomerang,
all but invisible to the enemy radar and able to remain over hostile territory without any
fear of getting grilled if shot down. Will the UAVs take away the pilots' jobs permanently?
Can a computer operated machine take a smarter and faster decision in a war-like
situation?
The new free-flight concept will probably supplement the existing air traffic control system
by computers on each plane to map the altitude, route, weather and other planes; and a
decade from now, there will be no use of radar any more.
How much bigger can the airplanes get? In the ‘50s they got speed, in the ‘80s they became
stealthy. Now, they are getting smarter thanks to computer automation. The change is
quite huge: from the four-seater to the A 380 airplane. It seems we are now trading speed
for size as we build a new Super-jumbo jet, the 555 seater A380, which will fly at almost the
same speed of the Boeing 707 introduced half a century ago, but with an improved
capacity, range, greater fuel economy. A few years down the line will come the truly larger
model, to be known as 747X. In the beginning of 2005, the A380, the world’s first fully
double-decked superjumbo passenger jet, weighing 1.2 million pounds, may carry a load of
about 840 passengers.
Barring the early phase, civil aviation has always lagged behind the military technologies
(of jet engines, lightweight composite materials etc.). There are two fundamental factors
behind the decline in commercial aeronautics in comparison to military aeronautics. There
is no collective vision of our future such as the one that drove us in the past. There is also a
need for a more aggressive pool or airplane design talents to maintain an industry that
continues to find a multibillion dollar-a-year market for its product.
Can the history of aviation technology tell us something about the future of aeronautics?
Have we reached a final state in our evolution to a mature technology in aeronautics? Are
the challenges of coming out with the ‘better, cheaper, faster’ designs somehow inferior to
those that are suited for ‘faster, higher, further’ ? Safety should improve greatly as a result
of the forthcoming improvements in airframes, engines, and avionics. Sixty years from
now, aircraft will recover on their own if the pilot loses control. Satellites are the key not
only to GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation but also to in-communications,
uplinked weather, and turbocharged diesels, or both—there is little debate about how these
power plants will be controlled. Pilots of the future can look forward to more and better
on-board safety equipment.
