Calf strains are common sport injuries, especially in those participating in sudden running, such as sprinting,
football, basketball, and baseball. A calf strain happens when your calf muscle is forcefully contracted, stretched or
torn causing symptoms. A calf strain is also called pulled calf. If the calf is completely torn, it is called ruptured calf.

Symptoms

The most common sign of a strain is pain. Depending on the severity of your calf strain, you may also experience
 Swelling at the site of injury

 Bruising

 Difficulty walking or moving your leg or foot

Physiotherapy Treatment Options for Calf Strains

The type of physiotherapy treatments that you will receive depends on the severity of your calf strain.
Your physiotherapist may use a combination of any of the following
 Ice or heat application

 Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

 Ultrasound

 Soft tissue mobilization

 Physiotherapy exercises
o Range of motion exercises
o Stretching exercises
o Strengthening exercises

 Suggest a walking aid (cane, walker or crutches)

 Gait training

 Patient education
