“CORRELATION OF MATHEMATICS ANXIETY AND MATHEMATICS
PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE VIII STUDENTS” Undergraduate Thesis.
Mindanao State University- Buug Campus. April 2019.
Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and
arrangement. Since the beginning of recorded history, it has been at the forefront of every
civilized society and is used in even the most primitive of cultures. Unfortunately, the
image of Mathematics is often viewed by students as one of the most abstract and
conceptually difficult subject. In spite of the important role of Mathematics in different
fields, students have been shown to have motivational difficulties when studying the
subject. It is a known fact that many students see Mathematics as a subject to be endured,
a kind of mental torture rather than a subject of real-world importance and personal
value.
This study was conducted to determine the correlation of Mathematics anxiety
and Mathematics performance of the Grade VIII students of MSU- Buug Laboratory
High School. A sample of 85 Grade VIII students of MSU- Buug Laboratory High
School was utilized in a descriptive survey method.
The study endeavoured to find out if a significant correlation of Mathematics
anxiety and Mathematics performance of the said students exist.
Data were gathered through distributions of questionnaire-checklist to the
respondents who were chosen through simple random sampling.
The results revealed that the level of Mathematics anxiety of Grade VIII students
of MSU- Buug Laboratory High School is “average” and the level of Mathematics
performance of the Grade VIII students of MSU- Buug Laboratory High School is
“poor”.
Since the value of the observed z- test which is -3.40 is lesser than the z- tabulated
at 5% and 1% levels of significance, it was concluded that there was a highly significant
negative correlation between Mathematics anxiety and Mathematics performance of the
Grade VIII students.
It is highly recommended that parents should have a close follow-up on the
performance of their children in school. For the teachers, they should design classrooms
that will make students more successful and incorrect response must be handled in a
positive way to encourage students’ active participation and enhance students’ confidence
towards mathematics and students should engage more in mathematical activity which
paves way to improve Mathematics performance.
