What is a sizing estimate?

"A sizing estimate is an approximation of the hardware or software resources required to support an
application set that is either currently implemented or new. It is a pre-sales effort aimed at addressing
customer requirements. The level of effort and scope of sizing degree of variability can range from
small to very significant. Sizing does not constitute a performance guarantee.”
Customer results may vary, and IBM assumes no liability for actual results that differ from any
estimates provided by IBM. Please refer to the “Confidentiality and Disclaimers” section of this sizing
estimate for additional information.

Information Server Sizing and Planning Questionnaire

Introduction

Thank you for providing this information for sizing your environment. This information will allow us to
determine the appropriate non-functional requirements we need to collect in order to make a
recommendation based on your business environment and requirements.
The accuracy of this sizing estimate is dependent upon many variables such as the accuracy of the
information provided by you, the customer, (we recognize that it may be difficult to provide exact
numbers on your environment) and the actual usage of the system in a real-time environment.
Sizing should be viewed as an iterative process.
Techline sizing support offering is a technical marketing support program for IBM reps and eligible
business partners. This is not a post-install offering and it is not a service to customers. The
estimates are intended to help you roughly size the processor capacity needed for a solution in
situations prior to implementation and deployment. Ideally a pilot workload running in a test
environment would provide a more accurate sizing estimate than the results from this sizing process.
IBM reps or business partners, perhaps in conversation with your customer, should fill out this
questionnaire. This questionnaire should NOT be given out to customers to answer without an
IBMer's active participation. In other words, we expect you to be knowledgeable enough about the
customer’s plans to use any information they have on the nature of their work to make appropriate
assumptions that we will use for the sizing estimate, and answer the questions below.

Glossary of Terms

Job Complexity

Complexity level Description

Job with one or more flows, with 10 or more lookups, with or without shared
containers and complex transformation logic, multiple sources and/or multiple
targets, complex availability requirements (failover, processing units, etc).
Very
Complex May also require custom components (build-ops, user-defined functions)
developed to supplement built-in product functionality. May also require
custom error-handling, logging, auditing (row count / verification) routines to
fulfill customer business requirements.
Includes data transformations, translations (transformations are business rule
manipulation of fields, Translations are look-ups to replace field values) and
some level of normalization. Multiple sources to multiple targets. Use of
advanced DataStage techniques which might include; multiple RDBMS Tables
with foreign keys, complex flat files, conditional Look-up processes.
Complex Standard translation / transformation functions may need to be extended via
the scripting language to handle complex business rules developed using
standard transformation functions provided in the Designers workbench.
High performance requirements.
May require logic to be implemented which includes error notification and
error correction routines.
Includes some data transformations & translations or joining multiple source
files. No more than 10-15 stages.
Medium Medium level of complexity in job design which could include; multiple
RDBMS tables, look-up process to replace a value, one or more stage to
normalize / standardize data for the Target file structure.
Job with one flow with no more than one lookup, not more than 5 to 7 stages
Simple with simple transformations. Straight source to target mapping. Simple data
type conversions, simple truncation or padding of fields.

Installation / Architecture Topology

The architecture of IBM Information Server is organized into four major logical tiers (layers):

Layer Description
Administration, analysis, and development user interfaces. Optional
Client
MetaBrokers and bridges for importing and exporting metadata
Metadata Database that stores IBM Information Server settings, configuration, design
repository and runtime metadata.

Services IBM Information Server common and product-specific services.

Runtime engine that executes all IBM Information Server tasks. Includes
Engine engine, connectors, packs, and related service agents (logging agent, ASB
communication agent, Job Monitor, and Performance Monitor)..

Cluster and Grid Deployments

In all configurations, multiple IBM InfoSphere Information Server Version 8 engines may be installed on
physically separate servers. By including these servers in a parallel configuration file at runtime, IBM
InfoSphere Information Server processing can span across a single server boundary. In a cluster or grid
deployment, all engine servers must be the same operating system, must be located in the same physical
data center, and should be connected by a dedicated, private high-speed network connection.
