Nokia 1830 PSS
The Nokia 1390 Network Planning Tool (NPT) is a highly sophisticated, multi-
functional software application that adds intelligence, automation and efficiency to
optical networking design and operations. It is purpose designed for offering
service providers a comprehensive set of engineering, planning and analysis
functions for multi-layer converged OTN/WDM optical networks based on the
market-leading Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)

• Single GUI multi-layer planning capability for
wavelength and sub-wavelength (ODU) services
• Design and engineering of the photonic layer, Figure 2 Plan , optimize and report
based on best-in-class routing and wavelength
assignment and optical feasibility algorithms
• Optimization of the total network equipment cost
through optimized forwarding at the lower layer,
based on unique Bell Labs algorithms
• Multi-layer fault simulation and network analysis,
including GMPLS-based restoration and Multi-
Region Network (MRN)-based coordination of the
networking across layers
• Interworking with Nokia management system
• Upload of network status to enable
network simulation and investigate
possible upgrade scenarios
• Download of the design results to enable
Nokia1830 PSS automatic commissioning,
setup and upgrades
Benefits
• Optimize costs of multi-layer OTN/WDM optical
networks
• Single tool for planning and engineering of multi-
layer converged optical networks, based on Nokia
equipment
• Network optimization, using advanced Bell Labs
algorithms for minimum equipment and network
cost, also applicable to single-layer networks
• Maximize network transparency, removing useless
regenerations and minimizing the size of the
electrical ODU switches, while optimizing the
intermediate grooming of the sub-wavelength
services
• Simulation of GMPLS-based control plane
• Improve performance, turn-up and life cycle of
mechanisms supported for network dimensioning
multi-layer OTN/WDM optical networks
and fault analysis, including single and multilayer
• Address unpredictable traffic growth and service
simulation for faults and bandwidth utilization –
demand changes that dramatically impact
and recommended capacity expansion when
network planning and design
certain faults are identified in the network
• Multi-layer simulation and analysis for predicting
• Upload and download of network information to
network behavior and availability along with
or from the Nokia Management System, as
evaluation of several protection or restoration
needed for overlay networks and multiple
schemes and upgrade or evolution scenarios
