2. It gives me a great pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s CPA and
ACCA Graduation Ceremony. It is a great joy to convey congratulations to
each one of you from the members of Strathmore University, alumni and
friends. Please let us give a round of applause to all graduants.
3. I also want to congratulate the men and women who devote their
professional lives to making this university in general and the School of
Accountancy in particular a place of excellence and achievement ‐ the
exemplary lecturers and administrators of the School of Accountancy.
4. And I want to join the graduants in saying thanks to the people who did
so much to make this day possible ‐ the ones who rooted for you,
believed in you, prayed for you, and paid for you ‐ the parents and
sponsors of the graduants.
5. It is truly a time to celebrate. You have spent many sleepless nights,
either worrying about passing or worrying how to get up in the morning,
having had too much fun. From now on, no more exams, no more
apprehension. Still, I hope you will not stop being students. The fact that
you will not have exams does not mean that you should not go on
learning. You must continue to commune with fellow human beings, just
as you have been in community here among yourselves and with your
fine, inspiring lecturers.

6. In addition to those of you who have passed the KASNEB and ACCA
exams, we have many men and women who have won prizes in the
different CPA and ACCA papers. Special congratulations to them. A round
of applause for them is in order!
7. Strathmore will always be your university. Strathmore is proud of your
achievements and you should be proud of your own achievements too.
You will always remain part of the Strathmore family, and as the years
pass this university will always give you reason to be proud. Needless to
say that I am an alumni of Strathmore School. This is my family as well.I
want you to share in all Strathmore’s successes nationally and
internationally.
8. I believe that Strathmore University has prepared you to face the
challenges that bedevil the profession.I must remind you that you will not
always find it easy in your practice: whether as an accountant, auditor,
consultant or in any other capacity. Whenever you will be faced with
these challenges always remember one thing: IT IS INTERGRITY THAT
WILL CARRY THE DAY AT THE END OF THE DAY!
9. Now as you embark on your journey into the real world, I have 3 urges to
make to you;
Firstly, I urge you to try everything in life you think you are capable of. If
you think you can be the Governor of Central Bank of Kenya please go
ahead and try to achieve it. If you think you can be the Chief Executive of
Safaricom please go out and work to achieve that position. If you think
you can be the Vice Chancellor of Strathmore, I urge you to go out and
work hard to achieve that goal.
Donald Trump says “if you’re going to think anyway, think BIG” and work
for it. For if you do not try these things, you will have a very miserable old
age life, because you will always imagine you were born to be greater
than you are only that you did not try. Most people in life are

disappointed by the things they did not try than those they tried even if
they failed.
Let me assure you that this is the way I have lived and continue to live.
10. Secondly I urge you to look back seriously in your life up to now.
There are several things, circumstances and activities that have made you
succeed in the PAST, whether in exams, in life or in your careers. These
things may be hard work, honesty, personal discipline, loyalty to friend,
love of God, loyalty to you families, love and passion for anything you do
and many others. These will also contribute substantially to your future
success. I urge you to strongly improve on these for they will be your
shield during difficult times, whether it is storms in your professional field
of choice, marriage or family life.
11. Thirdly I want to urge you to seriously identify a few role models.
Role models are very important in ones life. They will act as your mentor,
they can shape your character and more importantly you can draw
inspiration from them. So identify the role models that will impact on you
positively.
12. I have had four (4) role models in my life. My first role model was
my mother. My mother never went to a formal school, but she was
taught how to read and write by a newly married lady whom she had
been asked to keep company as she had moved to a new home. So as
they talked, my mother came to know that she could read and write and
that is how she was taught. Later on in life when she was at her late 60’s
she enrolled in the Adult Education Programme and she used to go to
school at night in my home village. Even my self I had to do law in my old
age under the Parallel Degree Programme.
My other role model in business was a man called S.G Warburg. He set up
an Investment Bank from scratch in London in 1940. More importantly he
was a stickler to details and would not countenance mediocrity.

Another role model was Former Prime Minister of Japan named Fukunda.
What I draw from him was his determination. He tried 8times to become
the prime Minister always resulting I failure. Every time he failed, he
reassured himself that one day Japan would need him as a Prime Minister
and true to his dream he eventually became a Prime Minister.
My final role model is former President of South Korea. What was
important for this man is that he was selfless, he had only 1 small house
where he lived but more importantly he devoted his entire career
transforming South Korea from a poor rural Country to the modern state
of that country.
I sincerely urge you to identify role models who will be like anchors in
your life.
13. My final wish for you is this, that the friends you are seated with in
this Graduation be your friends for life, may they be a shoulder to lean on
in times of fortune and trouble. Let this graduation Bind you in enormous
affection. Let your shared experiences of a time that could never come
again help you. I wish this for you today and tomorrow. For all of you
have made it.
14. I hope that even if you do not remember a word of mine, you will
remember these words from Napoleon Hill, the author of the book of
“Laws of Success” who said “Cherish your vision and your dreams as they
are the children of your soul, the blue prints of your ultimate
achievements.”
15. I wish you years of joy, years of serenity, years of friendship and
successful lives.
16. Thank you.
