INTRODUCTION

On the Job Training (OJT) is a part of college curriculum that aims to train

and orient students about the work and their future career. It is a method by which

students are exposed with different work situation designed to give students an

opportunity to experience and a chance to apply the theories and computation that

they have learned from school.

On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is a type of skill development

where a worker learns how to do the work through hands on experience. OJT

generally gives the trainee the opportunity to work in the same place and with the

same equipment that will be used regularly which can make it an efficient

approach to learning new things.

On the Job Training will serve as a training ground. OJT is an important way

in which people acquire relevant knowledge and skills at work. It is important to

make the distinction between training and learning – this is critical to the effective

design and delivery of training in organizations. However, using the well-

established term, on-the-job training (OJT) can be defined as an activity

undertaken at the workplace which is designed to improve an individual’s skills or

knowledge.

The type of training can help students to become more familiar with the

realities of working; in some cases, on-the-job training may lead to a stable and

fulfilling career.

HISTORY

Surigao State College of Technology (SSCT) was a formerly Surigao Del

Norte School of Arts and Trades, established as a trade school on September

15, 1969 by virtue of Republic Act 6057, which later became a chartered State

College on June 15, 1998 through Republic Act 8650.

The school started its operation with borrowed technology teachers from

three different schools of the province. There were 103 pioneering students in the

first secondary trade and the trade technical curricula. Two story buildings were

constructed upon donation of 1.2 hectares of land through the Provincial

Government. Along with this, several machineries were acquired from the Japan

Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV); Technical Vocational Program

(TVEP); Asian Development Bank (ADB); and the Philippine Australian Technical

Vocational Education Program (PATVEP) which became instruments of

becoming a full-fledged higher institution offering Bachelor of Science in

Industrial Technology (BSIT) and the Bachelor of Industrial Education (BSIE) and

the Master of Arts in Teaching Vocational Education (MTVED).

On June 15, 1998 by virtue of Republic Act 8650, the Surigao Norte

School of Arts and Trades and the Malimono School of Fisheries were integrated

into a chartered college known as the Surigao State College of Technology

(SSCT). This was sponsored by the late Senator Robert Z. Barbers when he was

the Congressman of the 2nd District of Surigao Del Norte and was signed by His

Excellency President Fidel V. Ramos. Republic Act 8650 set the Board of

Trustees as the highest governing body of the State College.

On October 30, 2000, that followed, SSCT continually expanded and

developed through collaborative efforts of education officials, local and national

politicians, school administrators, faculty and staff as well as parents, students

and the community. The college has embarked on massive infrastructural

development and upgraded its institutional capabilities especially in the

instruction, research, extension and production.

ASSESSMENT OF WORK EXPERIENCE

On the first day as a trainee at the SSCT College Registrar’s Office, my

co- trainees did not orient about how and what I am going to do. What I did was

observe and do what they were doing in the whole day. I then started encoding

registration forms to the installed system. I easily learned the application for it

has a user friendly environment.

As we encoded the registration forms to the system, the Registrar told us

to transfer it to the old system to be able to put the grades of the students. Since

I was not orient about the old system, I tried to open it and explore so that I’ll be

able to familiarize the interface. My co- trainees helped me with the functions of

the old system and as time goes by I was able to familiarize and easily learned

the functionality of the system. I double checked the subject code, description

and even the units because sometimes the data is not consistent as we thought.

The next we did was to verify the student if he/she is enrolled in the

second semester. We also verified if the encoded subject in the system is match

in the yellow registration form. We also attached the adding/dropping form to the

printed Certificate Of Registration (COR) of the specific student. After verifying,

we counted the numbers of student in every program since the new system

doesn’t have the function to do it. So, we did it in our own way. We separated

male and female, then we counted how many males and females are there in

every program.

Sometimes, I do printing of grades if there are students asking for their

grades. I also print reissuance of COR because some of the students lost or

misplace it. I also do outside the office job such as decorating the venue for the

Convocation Program and assisting the Late Enrolee Orientation.

The last job I had was making Transcript of Records for graduating

students. It’s not as easy as everyone think because you have to always double

check the subject code, description, units and personal information of each

student. I always had a hard time every time I encountered records of irregular

students. It is really time consuming unlike in the regular students, easy and I can

move to the next student as fast as I could.

My On-the-Job Training experience was exciting. I became independent

and figuring things out on my own. I learned to sacrifice things. I hardly have time

for unnecessary matters. Even on weekends, I’m in the office because I need to

finish my training before the given date of submission of requirements. I also

learned how to interact and communicate with people. And I know how to handle

different queries in both action and words. I always put in my mind that this

experience will serve as a training ground in my future job.
