FOREWORD
The lessons for this quarter concern THE TIME OF THE END, and cover a
period of time which extends from the beginning of the first angel's message to the
second coming of Christ. These lessons make a brief survey of the Advent Move-
ment - the joys, disappointments, struggles and victories experienced in the past;
the circumstances prevailing at present; and the final outcome of the controversy,
in the light of divine prophecy. Also considered are the dangers and snares that
Satan has prepared for the children of God; and all should especially weigh their'
urgent needs, both as individuals and as a body of believers. History and prophecy
have always been two important subjects of study among the people of the Lord.
In this connection it would be well to give special attention to the folloWing in-
structions of the Spirit of Prophecy:
"My ministering brethren, as you stand before the people, speak those things
that are essential, those things that will instruct. Teach the great practical truths
that must be brought into the life. Teach the saving power of Jesus, 'in whom we
have redemption ... even the forgiveness of sins.' (Col. I: 14). Strive to make your
hearers comprehend the power of truth.
"Ministers should present the sure word of prophecy as the foundation of the
faith of Seventh-day Adventists... ." -Gospel Workers, pp. 147, 148.
" ... Satan's efforts to hinder the work and to destroy the workmen have not
ceased; but God has had a care for his servants and for His work.
" ... We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way
the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history." -Life Sketches, p. 196.
Our prayers go with these lessons, that the Lord may bless the students with
additional enlightenment, and that His Holy Spirit may impress their hearts with
the need of seeking a more genuine experience with the Lord, as they meditate
upon the truths herein.

PRESENT TRUTH
KEY TEXT: "Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remem-
brance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in
the present truth." (2 Peter 1: 12).
NOTE: " ... Different periods in the history of the church have each been mark-
ed by the development of some special truth, adapted to the necessities of God's
people at that time. Every new truth has made its way against hatred and opposi-
tion; those who were blessed with its light were tempted and tried. The Lord gives
a special truth for the people in an emergency. Who dare refuse to publish it? ... n
2. In what direction does the truth increase and for what purpose? Provo 4: 18.
NOTE: "No truth is more clearly taught in the Bible than that God by His Holy
Spirit especially directs His servants on earth in the great movements for the carry-
ing forward of the work of salvation. Men are instruments in the hand of God,
employed by Him to accomplish His purposes of grace and mercy. Each has his
part to act; to each is granted a measure of light, adapted to the necessities of his
time, and sufficient to enable him to perform the work which God has given him to
do... .'~-Great Controversy, p. 343.
NOTE: "God permitted great light to shine upon the minds of these chosen men,
'revealing tothem many of the errors of Rome; but they did not receive all the light
that was to be given to the world. Through these, His servants, God was leading
the people out of the darkness 'of Romanism; but there were many and great
obstacles for them to meet, and He led them on, step by step, as they could bear it.
They were not prepared to receive all the light at once. Like the full glory of the
noontide sun to those who have long dwelt in darkness, it would, if presented, have
caused them to turn away. Therefore He revealed it to the leaders little by little, as
it could be received by the people. From century to century, other faithful workers
-5-'--
were to follow, to lead the people on still further in the path of reform." -Great
Controversy, p. 103.
4. How does the apostle Peter show that the children of God could understand
only as much as was necessary for their time? 1 Peter 1:10-12.
NOTE: "Even the prophets who were favored with the special illumination of the
Spirit did not fully comprehend the import of the revelations committed to them.
The meaning was to be unfolded from age to age, as the people of God should
need the instruction therein contained." -Great Controversy, p. 344.
NOTE: "To man the first intimation of redemption was communicated in the
sentence pronounced upon Satan in the garden. The Lord declared, 'I will put en-
mity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall
bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.' Genesis 3:15. This sentence,
uttered in the hearing of our first parents, was to them a promise. While it foretold
war between man and Satan, it declared that the power of the great adversary
would finally be broken.... " -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 65, 66.
6. How was the truth unfolded to Abraham? Gal. 3:8; John 8:.56.
NOTE: "Through type and promise God 'preached before the gospel unto
Abraham.' Galatians 3:8. And the patriarch's faith was fixed upon the Redeemer
to come. Said Christ to the Jews, 'Your father Abraham rejoiced that he should see
My day; and he saw it, and was glad.' John 8:56, RY., margin. The ram offered in
the place of Isaac represented the Son of God, who was to be sacrificed in our
stead. When man was doomed to death by transgression of the law of God, the
Father, looking upon His Son, said to the sinner, 'Live: I have found a ransom.' "
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 154.
7. How much of the plan of salvation did the Lord reveal to Jacob and in what
way? Gen. 28:11-14.
NOTE: "In this vision the plan of redemption was presented to Jacob, not fully,
but in such parts as were essential to him at that time. The mystic ladder revealed
to him in his dream was the same to which Christ referred in His conversation with
Nathanael. Said He, 'Ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending
and descending upon the Son of man.' John 1:51. Up to the time of7 man's
rebellion against the government of God, there had been free communion between
God and man. But the sin of Adam and Eve separated earth from heaven, so that
man could not have communion with his Maker. Yet the world was not left in
solitary hopelessness. The ladder represents Jesus, the appointed medium of com-
-6-
munication, Had He not with His own merits bridged the gulf that sin had made,
the ministering angels could have held no communion with fallen man, Christ
connects man in his weakness and helplessness with the source of infinite power."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p, 184,
NOTE: "Christ Himself had sent them forth with the message: 'The time is
fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.'
Mark 1: 15, That message was based on the prophecy of Daniel 9, The sixty-nine
weeks were declared by the angel to extend to 'the Messiah the Prince,' , , ,"
-Great Controversy, p, 345,
9. What was present truth in the time of Luther? Rom. 1: 16, 17.
NOTE: "By a recent decretal an indulgence had been promised by the pope to all
who should ascend upon their knees' Pilate's staircase,' said to have been descend-
ed by our Saviour on leaving the Roman judgment hall and to have been
miraculously conveyed from Jerusalem to Rome, Luther was one day devoutly
climbing these steps, when suddenly a voice like thunder seemed to say to him:
'The just shall live by faith.' Rom, 1:17", ," -Great Controversy, p, 125,
", , , There was a present truth in the days of Luther, -a truth at that time of
special importance; there is a present truth for the church today, He who does all
things according to the counsel of His will has been pleased to place men under
various circumstances and to enjoin upon them duties to the times in which they
live and the conditions under which they are placed, If they would prize the light
given them, broader views of truth would be opened before them, , , ," -Ibid.,
pp, 143, 144,
NOTE: "The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people
through Elders Waggoner and Jones, This message was to bring more prominently
before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world,
It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to
receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the
commandments of God, Many had lost sight of Jesus, They needed to have their
-7-
eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the
human family. All power is give into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts
unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless
human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world.
It is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and
attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. " -Testimonies to
Ministers, pp. 91, 92.
NOTE: " ... Precious light has come, appropriate for this time. It is Bible truth,
showing the perils that are right upon us. This light should lead us to a diligent
study of the Scriptures and a most critical examination of the positions which we
hold. God would have all the bearings and positions of truth thoroughly and
perseveringly searched, with prayer and fasting. Believers are not to rest in sup-
positions and ill-defined ideas of what constitutes truth. Their faith must be firmly
founded upon the word of God so that when the testing time shall come and they
are brought before councils to answer for .their faith they may be able to give a
reason for the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, pp. 707, 708.
" ... In order to endure the trial before them, they must understand the will
of God as revealed in His word; they can honor Him only as they have a right con-
ception of His character, government, and purposes, and act in accordance with
them. None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will
stand through the last great conflict. ... " -Great Controversy, pp. 593, 594.

Lesson 2 1'Jly 7 - 13
KEY TEXT: "And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days;
then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." (Dan. 8:14).
2. Who was chosen by the Lord and directed to the prophecies of the Bible?
NOTE: " ... God directed the mind of William Miller to the prophecies and gave
him great light upon the book of Revelation." -Early Writings, p. 231.
3. Which two books did William Miller see as being complementary to each
other? Dan. 12:4; Rev. 1: 1.
NOTE: "If Daniel's visions had been understood, the people could better have
understood the visions of John.... " -Early Writings, p. 231.
Tlu Lord gau, Daniel an oD"-all view of llu history of thl world down.to 1844. At that
time the judgmmt hour was sll.
NOTE: "Yet God had bidden His messenger: 'Make this man to understal).d the
vision.' That commission must be fulfilled. In obedience to it, the angel, some time
-9-
afterward, returned to Daniel, saying: 'I am now come forth to give thee skill and
understanding;' 'therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.'
Daniel 8:27, 16; 9:22, 23, 25-27. There was one important point in the vision of
chapter 8 which had been left unexplained, namely, that relating to time -the
period of the 2,300 days; therefore the angel, in resuming his explanation, dwells
chiefly upon the subject of time:
"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy
City.... " -Great Controversy, pp. 325, 326.
5, Into how many important parts is the prophecy of 2,300 days divided?
Dan, 9:24; Luke 21:24.
NOTE: " ... 'Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy
City.' The word here translated' determined' literally signifies' cut off.' Seventy
weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to be cut off, as specially
pertaining to the Jews. But from what were they cut off? As the 2,300 days was the
only period of time mentioned in chapter 8, it must be the period from which the
seventy weeks were cut off; the seventy weeks must therefore be a part of the 2,300
days, and the two periods must begin together. ... " -Great Controversy, p. 326.
o Tuesday July 9
NOTE: " ... Seventy weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to
be cut off, as specially pertaining to the Jews.... " -Great Controversy, p. 326.
" 'From the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build
Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and
two weeks' -namely,' sixty-nine weeks, or 483 years. The decree of Artaxerxes
went into effect in the autumn of 457 B.G From this date, 483 years extend to the
autumn of A. D. 27. At that time this prophecy was fulfilled. The word' Messiah'
signifies 'the Anointed One.' In the autumn of A.D. 27 Christ was baptized by
John and received the anointing of the Spirit. .. ." -Ibid" p. 327.
" 'And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week.' The' week'
here brought to view is the last one of the seventy; it is the last seven years of the
period allotted especially to the Jews. During this time, extending from A.D. 27 to
A. D. 34, Christ, at first in person and afterward by His disciples, extended the
gospel invitation especially to the Jews. As the apostles went forth with the good
tidings of the kingdom, the Saviour's direction was: 'Go not into the way of the
Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel.' Matt. 10:5, 6.
-10-
" 'In the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to
cease.' In A.D. 31, three and a half years after His baptism, our Lord was crucified.
With the great sacrifice offered upon Calvary, ended that system of offerings
which for four thousand years had pointed forward to the Lamb of God. Type had
met anti type, and all the sacrifices and oblations of the ceremonial system were
there to cease." -Ibid., pp. 327, 328.
7. Who issued the decree to rebuild Jerusalem? How does this experience
relate to the 70 weeks? Ezra 6:14.
NOTE: "In the seventh chapter of Ezra the decree is found. Verses 12-26. In its
completest form it was issued by Artaxerxes, king of Persia, 457 B.C. ... "
"Taking 457 B.C., the time when the decree was completed, as the date of the
commandment, every specification of the prophecy concerning the seventy weeks
was seen to have been fulfilled." -Great Controversy, pp. 327,328.
"Thus far every specification of the prophecies is strikingly fulfilled, and the
beginning of the seventy weeks is fixed beyond question at 457 B.C., and their ex-
piration in A.D. 34 ... .'. -Ibid., p. 328.
NOTE: "The seventy weeks, or 490 years, especially allotted to the Jews, ended,
as we have seen, in A.D. 34. At that time, through the action of the Jewish
Sanhedrin, the nation sealed its rejection of the gospel by the martyrdom of
Stephen and the persecution of the followers of Christ. Then the message of salva-
tion, no longer restricted to the chosen people, was given to the world. The dis-
ciples, forced by persecution to flee from Jerusalem, 'went everywhere preaching
the word.' 'Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto
them.' Peter, divinely guided, opened the gospel to the centurion of Caesarea, the
God-fearing Cornelius; and the ardent Paul, won to the faith of Christ, was com-
missioned to carry the glad tidings 'far hence unto the Gentiles.' Acts 8:4,5;
22 :21." -Great Controversy, p. 328.
10. As no other time-prophecy reaches further than the end of the 2,300 day
period, what may we know of any who attempt to set a specific time for the
second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ? Rev. 10:1,2,5,6.
NOTE: " ... The repeated efforts to find new dates for the beginning and close of
the prophetic periods, and the unsound reasoning necessary to sustain these
positions, not only lead minds away from the present truth, but throw contempt
upon all efforts to explain the prophecies. The more frequently a definite time is
set for the second advent, and the more Widely it is taught, the better it suits the
purposes of Satan... ." -Great Controversy, p. 457.

Lesson 3 July 14 - 20
KEY TEXT: "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the
everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and
to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a
loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of his
judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth,
and the sea, and the fountains of waters." Rev. 14:6,7.
NOTE: "'With the solemn conviction that such momentous events were
predicted in the Scriptures to be fulfilled in so short a space of time, the question
came home to me with mighty power regarding my duty to the world, in view of
the evidence that had affected my own mind.' He could not but feel that it was his
duty to impart to others the light which he had received.. "
. Miller accepted the generally received view that in the Christian age the
earth is the sanctuary, and he therefore understood that the cleansing of the sanc-
tuary foretold in Daniel 8:14 represented the purification of the earth by fire at
the second coming of Christ. ... " -Ibid., pp. 324, 325.
2. By what message did Miller warn the world? By whom is he and his co-
workers represented? Rev. 14:6,7.
NOTE: " ... The work of preaching the gospel has not been committed to angels,
but has been entrusted to men. Holy angels have been employed in directing this
work, they have in charge the great movements for the salvation of men; but the
actual proclamation of the gospel is performed by the servants of Christ upon the
earth." -Great Controversy, p. 312.
4. What was the condition of the churches at that time? What should have
resulted in the churches when this message was given? Rev. 3:1,2.
NOTE: "To prepare a people to stand in the day of God, a great work of reform
was to be accomplished. God saw that many of His professed people were not
building for eternity, and in His mercy He was about to send a message of warning
to arouse them from their stupor and lead them to make ready for the coming of
the Lord." -Great Controversy, p.311.
NOTE: " ... He therefore hesitated to present it, lest he should be in error and be
the means of misleading others...." -Great Controversy, p.330.
" ... For nine years he waited, the burden still pressing upon his soul, until in
1831 he for the first time publicly gave the reasons of his faith." -Ibid., p. 331.
"In 1833 Miller received a license to preach, from the Baptist Church, of
which he was a member. .... " -Ibid., p. 332.
6. What attitude did the churches adopt toward the warning and what did the
ministers do? What arguments were used by the people? Luke 11:52;
John 7:48.
NOTE: "But the churches generally did not accept the warning. Their ministers,
who, as watchmen' unto the house of Israel,' should have been the first to discern
the tokens of Jesus' coming ... The fact that the message was, to a great extent,
preached by laymen, was urged as an argument against it. As of old, the plain
testimony of God's word was met with the inquiry: 'Have any of the rulers or of
the Pharisees believed?' And finding how difficult a task it was to refute the
arguments drawn from the prophetic periods, many discouraged the study of the
prophecies, teaching that the prophetic books were sealed and were not to be un-
derstood. Multitudes, trusting implicitly to their pastors, refused to listen to the
warning; and others, though convinced of the truth, dared not confess it, lest they
should be 'put out of the synagogue.' ... " -Great Controversy, p.380.
-14-
Conflicting Attitudes Toward the Message
D Wednesday July 17
7. What was the unavoidable result of the rejection of the warning? James 4:4.
NOTE: "In refusing the warning of the first angel, they rejected the means which
Heaven had provided for their restoration. They spurned the gracious messenger
that would have corrected the evils which separated them from God, and .\vith
greater eagerness they turned to seek the friendship of the world.... ". -Great
Controversy, p.380.
8. What blessed effect was seen in the lives of those who received the warhing?
Which parable was then fulfilled? Matt. 25:1-4.
NOTE: "The coming of Christ, as announced by the first angel's message, ~as
understood to be represented by the coming of the bridegroom. The widespread
reformation under the proclamation of His soon coming, answered to the going
forth of the virgins.... " -Great Controversy, pp. 393, 394. '
"The people heard with trembling. The convicting Spirit of God spoke to
their hearts. Many were led to search the Scriptures with new and deeper interest,
the intemperate and immoral were reformed, others abandoned their dishonest
practices ... " -Ibid., p. 367.
The Disappointment
D Thursday July 18
9. What parallel connects the experience of the disciples with that of the second
advent believers? What was God's purpose in this? Luke 24:19-~1.
NOTE: "Christ Himself had sent them forth with the message: 'The time is
fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.'
Mark I: 15. That message was based on the prophecy of Daniel 9. The sixty-nine
weeks were declared by the angel to extend to 'the Messiah the Prince,' and with
high hopes and joyful anticipations the disciples looked' forward to the establish-
ment of Messiah's kingdom at Jerusalem to rule over the whole earth." -'Great
Controversy, p. 345.
" ... There were among them many who had been actuated by no higher
motive than fear. Their profession of faith had not affected their hearts Or their
lives. When the expected event failed to take place, these persons declared that
they were not disappointed; they had never believed that Christ would come.
They were among the first to ridicule the sorrow of the true believers." -Ibid.,
pp. 373, 374.
-15-
10. What misunderstanding brought about the disappointment? In what way
does the parable of the ten virgins illustrate the experience of the waiting
people? Matt. 25:5.
NOTE: "Miller and his associates at first believed that the 2,300 days would ter-
minate in the spring of 1844, whereas the prophecy points to the autumn of that
year. The misapprehension of this point brought disappointment and perplexity to
those who had fixed upon the earlier date as the time of the Lord's coming.... "
-Great Controversy, pp. 328, 329.
" 'While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.' By the tarry-
ing of the bridegoom is represented the passing of the time when the Lord was ex-
pected, the disappointment, and the seeming delay.... 'They all slumbered and
slept;' one class in unconcern and abandonment of their faith, the other class
patiently waiting till clearer light should be given. Yet in the night of trial the
latter seemed to lose, to some extent, their zeal and devotion .... " -Ibid.,

Lesson 4 July 21 - 27
KEY TEXT: "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,"
(2 Cor. 6:17),
1. What did the churches do in rejecting the first angel's message? What was
the result? John 12:43.
NOTE: ", , , They spurned the gracious messenger that would have corrected the
evils which separated them from God, and with greater eagerness they turned to
seek the friendship of the world, Here was the cause of that fearful condition of
worldliness, backsliding, and spiritual death which existed in the churches in
1844," -Great Controversy, p, 380,
2. What change took place in the general features of the churches as they re-
jected the first angel's message? Why did they reject the message?
2 Thess. 2:10-12.
NOTE: "Wherever the cause exists, the same results will follow, He who
deliberately stifles his convictions of duty because it interferes with his inclinations
will finally lose the power to distinguish between truth and error, The understan-
ding becomes darkened, the conscience callous, the heart hardened, and the soul is
separated from God, Where the message of divine truth is spurned or slighted,
there the church will be enshrouded in darkness; faith and love grow cold, and es-
trangement and dissension enter. Church members center their interests and
energies in worldly pursuits, and sinners become hardened in their impenitence,"
-Great Controversy, pp, 378, 379,
NOTE: "As the churches refused to receive the first angel's message, they re-
jected the light from heaven and fell from the favor of God, , , ." -Early
Writings, p, 237,
-17-
4. How did the Lord regard the churches when they reached the condition
prophesied in Revelation 3:1,2? What is the significance of the message
given in Revelation 14:8 and when was it given?
5. What did the churches fail to recognize in this message? What did the
sincere believers do? Rev. 3:13; 2 Cor. 6:17,18.
OTE: " ... They trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first
message placed themselves where they could not see the light of the second anger s
message. But the beloved of God, who were oppressed, accepted the message,
'Babylon is fallen,' and left the churches." -Early Writings, p. 237.
6. What announcement joined the message and gave it great power? When did
this take place? Matt. 25:6.
NOTE: "Near the close of the second angers message, I saw a great light from
heaven shining upon the people of God. The rays of this light seemed bright as the
sun. And I heard the voices of angels crying, 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go
ye out to meet Him!' " -Early Writings, p.238.
" ... In the summer of 1844, midway between the time when it had been first
thought that the 2,300 days would end, and the autumn of the same year, to which
it was afterward found that they extended, the message was proclaimed in the very
words of Scripture: 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!'" -Great Controver-
sy, p.398.
Faith Strengthened
o Wednesday July 24
7. How did prophecy strengthen them and confirm their faith that their work
was under the guidance of God? Hab. 2:1-4.
-18-
NOTE: "As early as 1842 the direction given in this prophecy to 'write the vision,
and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it,' had suggested to
Charles Fitch the preparation of a prophetic chart to illustrate the visions of Daniel
and the Revelation. The publication of this chart was regarded as a fulfillment of
the command given by Habakkuk. No one, however, then noticed that an ap-
parent delay in the accomplishment of the vision -a tarrying time- is presented
in the same prophecy. After the disappointment, this scripture appeared very
significant: 'The vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,
and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not
tarry.... The just shall live by his faith.' " -Great Controversy, p.392.
TOTE: "'While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.' By the
tarrying of the bridegroom is represented the passing of the time when the Lord
was expected, the disappointment, and the seeming delay.... " -Great Con-
troversy, p. 394,
NOTE: "At the call, 'The Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him,' the
waiting ones 'arose and trimmed their lamps;' they studied the word of God with
an intensity of interest before unknown .... " -Great Controversy, p.402.
10. What was the result of the second angel's message and the proclamation of
the midnight cry? Amos 3:3.
NOTE: " ... Those who sought to shut out the testimony of God's word they
could not regard as constituting the church of Christ, 'the pillar and ground of the
truth.' Hence they felt themselves justified in separating from their former con-
nection. In the summer of 1844 about fifty thousand withdrew from the
churches." -Great Controversy, p.376.

. The tenth day of the seventh month, the great Day of Atonement, the
time of the cleansing of the sanctuary, which in the year 1844 fell upon the twenty-
second of Oct.ober, was regarded as the time of the Lord's coming. This was in har-
mony with the proofs already presented that the 2,300 days would terminate in the
autumn, and the conclusion seemed irresistible." -Ibid., p.400.
2. What power followed the midnight cry? How is the preparation of the ad-
vent believers described? 2 Cor. 5:14.
NOTE: "The message, 'Behold, the Bridegroom cometh! 'was not so much a
matter of argument, though the Scripture proof was clear and conclusive. There
went with it an impelling power that moved the soul. There was no doubt, no
questioning ... " -Great Controversy, p.402.
"Carefully and solemnly those who received the message came up to the time
when they hoped to meet their Lord. Every morning they felt that it was their first
duty to secure the evidence of their acceptance with God. Their hearts were closely
united, and they prayed much with and for one another. They often met together
in secluded places to commune with God, and the voice of intercession ascended to
heaven from the fields and groves. The assurance of the Saviour's approval was
more necessary to them than their daily food; and if a cloud darkened their minds,
they did not rest until it was swept away. As they felt the witness of pardoning
grace, they longed to behold Him whom their souls loved." -Ibid., p.403.
New Light
D Monday July 29
3. What happened with their expectation at that time? What was the only thing
that the sincere believers could do? Isa. 30: 18.
-20-
NOTE: "But again they were destined to disappointment. The time of expecta-
tion passed, and their Saviour did not appear, , , ," -Great Controversy, p, 403,
4. What truth helped the sincere souls in the time of that great trial? Heb. 8:1,
2; 9:24.
NOTE: "The passing of the time in 1844 was followed by a period of great trial to
those who still held the advent faith, Their only relief, so far as ascertaining their
true position was concerned, was the light which directed their minds to the sanc-
tuary above, Some renounced their faith in their former reckoning of the prophetic
periods and ascribed to human or satanic agencies the powerful influence of the
Holy Spirit which had attended the advent movement. Another class firmly held
that the Lord had led them in their past experience; and as they waited and watch-
ed and prayed to know the will of God they saw that their great High Priest had
entered upon another work of ministration, and, following Him by faith, they were
led to see also the closing work of the church, They had a clearer understanding of
the first and second angels' messages, and were prepared to receive and give to the
world the solemn warning of the third angel of Revelation 14," -Great Con-
troversy, pp, 431,432,
"The subject of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked the mystery of the
disappointment of 1844, it opened to view a complete system of truth, connected
and harmonious, showing that God's hand had directed the great advent
movement, ," -Ibid., p, 423,
A Further Wark
D Tuesday July 30
5. When they began to understand the reason for their disappointment what
truth was revealed to them concerning Daniel 8: 14 and Revelation 14:7?
What did they find to be their mistake? Rev. 11:19.
NOTE: "Both the prophecy of Daniel 8:14, 'Unto two thousand and three hun-
dred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed,' and the first angel's message,
. Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come,' pointed
to Christ's ministration in the most holy place, to the investigative judgment, and
not to the coming of Christ for the redemption of His people and the destruction of
the wicked, The mistake had not been in the reckoning of the prophetic periods,
but in the event to take place at the end of the 2,300 days" ," -Great Con-
troversy, p. 424.
NOTE: "But the people were not yet ready to meet their Lord. There was still a
work of preparation to be accomplished for them. Light was to be given, directing
their minds to the temple of God in heaven; and as they should by faith follow
-21-
their High Priest in His ministration there, new duties would be revealed. Another
message of warning and instruction was to be given to the church." -Great Con-
troversy, pp. 424, 425.
7. What had been given to illustrate the work of Christ and into how many parts
was Ris ministry divided? What is given to teach us that sins are not blotted
out immediately after they are confessed? Reb. 9:1-7; 8:5.
NOTE: "Important truths concerning the atonement are taught by the typical
service. A substitute was accepted in the sinner's stead; but the sin was not cancel-
ed by the blood of the victim. A means was thus provided by which it was
transferred to the sanctuary.... but he was not yet entirely released from the con-
demnation of the law.... " -Great Controversy, p. 420.
8. What more was expected of sinners who had already confessed their sins and
what were they to do in the great day of atonement in Old Testament times,
in order that a full atonement be made? Lev. 23:27; 16:15-17.
NOTE: " ... In the typical service, while the high priest was making the atone-
ment for Israel, all were required to afflict their souls by repentance of sin and
humiliation before the Lord, lest they be cut off from among the people.... "
-Great Controversy, pp. 489, 490.
" ... On the Day of Atonement the high priest, having taken an offering from
the congregation, went into the most holy place with the blood of this offering,
and sprinkled it upon the mercy seat, directly over the law, to make satisfaction for
its claims.' Then, in his character of mediator, he took the sins upon himself and
bore them from the sanctuary. Placing his hands upon the head of the scapegoat,
he confessed over him all these sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself
to the goat. The goat then bore them away, and they were regarded as forever
separated from the people." -Ibid., p. 420.

The Closing Work of Atonement in Type and Antitype
o Thursday August 1
9. What work remained to be done on behalf of the people in order for them to
be free from all condemnation? Lev. 16:16.
NOTE: " ... It was the closing work of the atonement-a removal or putting
away of sin from ·Israel. It prefigured the closing work in the ministration of our
High Priest in heaven, in the removal or blotting out of the sins of His people,
which are registered in the heavenly records.... " -Great Controversy, p.352.
" ... And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the
removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of the
heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which
are there recorded... " -Ibid., pp. 421, 422.
10. What work should be done at this time so that our sins which we have con-
fessed already may be blotted out? What should correspond with the Old
Testament requirement to "afflict their souls" on the day of atonement?
Acts 3:19.
NOTE: " ... The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should
be clearly understood by the people of God. All need a knowledge for themselves
of the position and work of their great High Priest. Otherwise it will be impossible
for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the posi-
tion which God designs them to fill. ... " -Great Controversy, p. 488.
" ... In like manner, all who would have their names retained in the book of
life should now, in the few remaining days of their probation, afflict their souls
before God by sorrow for sin and true repentance...." -Ibid., p. 490.
11. In the light of the sanctuary doctrine, what door was opened before the true
believers? Rev. 3:7, 8.
NOTE: "I saw that Jesus had shut the door of the holy place, and no man can
open it; and that He had opened the door into the most holy, and no man can shut
it (Rev. 3:7, 8); and that since Jesus has opened the door into the most holy place,
which contains the ark, the commandments have been shining out to God's peo-
ple, and they are being tested on the Sabbath question." -Early Writings, p.42.

KEY TEXT: "I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and
no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and has kept my
word, and hast not denied my name." (Rev. 3:8).
NOTE: "The great apostate had succeeded in exalting himself' above all that is
called God, or that is worshiped.' 2 Thessalonians 2:4. He had dared to change
the only precept of the divine law that unmistakably points all mankind to the true
and living God... ." -Great Controversy, p. 53.
" ... Upon obtaining supreme power, Rome had trampled upon the Sabbath
of God to exalt her own... " -Ibid., p. 578.
NOTE: " ... Paul states plainly that the 'man of sin' will continue until the se-
cond advent. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry
forward the work of deception. And the revelator declares, also referring to the
papacy: 'All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not
written in the book of life.' Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World,
the papacy will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that
rests solely' upon the authority of the Roman Church." -Great Controver-
sy, p.579.
NOTE: " ... The' image to the beast' represents that form of apostate Protestan-
tism which will be developed when the Protestant churches shall seek the aid of
the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas... ." -Great Controver-
sy, p.445.
5. What is the mark of the beast and when will men receive it? Rev. 14:9.
NOTE: "Roman Catholics acknowledge that the change of the Sabbath was made
by their church...
"As the sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papist writers cite' the
very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow
of ... because by keeping Sunday, they acknowledge the church's power to ordain
feasts, and to command them under sin.' -Henry Tuberville, An Abridgment of
the Christian Doctrine, page 58. What then is the change of the Sabbath, but the
sign, or mark, of the authority of the Roman Church-'the mark of the beast'?
-Great Controversy, pp. 447, 448.
"With the issue thus clearly brought before him, whoever shall trample upon
God's law to obey a human enactment receives the mark of the beast; he accepts
the sign of allegiance to the power which he chooses to obey instead of God...."
-Ibid., p. 604.
NOTE: "As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He. passed into
the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another
mighty angel with a third message to the world....
"It was represented to me that the remnant followed Jesus into the most holy
place and beheld the ark and the mercy seat, and were captivated with their glory.
Jesus then raised the cover of the ark, and lo! the tables of stone ... " -Early
Writings, pp. 254, 255.
8. What is the result of this message? What does prophecy reveal concerning
this? Rev. 14: 12; 15:1, 2.
NOTE: "In Revelation 14, men are called upon to worship the Creator; and the
prophecy brings to view a class that, as the result of the threefold message, are
•
keeping the commandments of God.... " -Great Controversy, p.437.
NOTE: " ... The third angel is leading up a people, step by step, higher and
higher. At every step they will be tested." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 190.
" ... The third angel is leading out and purifying a people, and they should
move with him unitedly.... " -Ibid., p. 207.
" ... These mess~ges, received and acted upon, are doing their work to
prepare a people to stand in the great day of God.... " -Selected Messages,
vol. 2, p. 111.
10. Why is this message so important? What do those forfeit who refuse to heed
it? Provo 1:24-29; Nahum 1:9.
NOTE: " ... The message presented at this time is the last message of mercy for a
fallen world. Those who have the privilege of hearing this message, and who per-
sist in refusing to heed the warning, cast away their last hope of salvation. There
will be no second probation. " -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 19.

KEY TEXT: "For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare
himself to the battle?" (1 Cor. 14:8).
NOTE: " ... The three angels of Revelation 14 represent the prople who accept
the light of God's messages and go forth as His agents to sound the warning
throughout the length and breadth of the earth.... " -Testimonies, vol. 5,
pp. 455, 456.
2. With what power are the three angels to proclaim their messages? How are
the people of God to act so that they do not make the message powerless?
Rev. 14:7-9.
NOTE: "Those who engage in the solemn work of bearing the third angel's
message must move out decidedly, and in the Spirit and power of God fearlessly
preach the truth and let it cut. They should elevate the standard of truth and urge
the people to come up to it. ... " -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 248.
The people are asleep in their sins and need to be alarmed before they can
shake off this lethargy. Their ministers have preached smooth things; but God's
servants, who bear sacred, vital truths, should cry aloud and spare not, that the
truth may tear off the garment of security and find its way to the heart. ...
"God's servants must bear a pointed testimony, which will cut the natural
heart and develop character. ... " -Ibid., p. 249.
NOTE: "Wherever the word of God has been faithfully preached, results have
followed that attested its divine origin. The Spirit of God accompanied the
-27-
message of His servants, and the word was with power. Sinners felt their con-
sciences quickened.... Deep conviction took hold upon their minds and
hearts.... " -Great Controversy, p. 461.
4. How has the third angel's message lost its power in the hands of the profess-
ed people of God? What kind of conversions can be seen? Matt. 5:13.
NOTE: " ... We are in danger of giving the third angel's message in so indefinite
a manner that it does not impress the people. So many other interests are brought
in that the very message which should be proclaimed with power becomes tame
and voiceless.... " -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 60.
" ... It is true that a widespread interest in kindled, many profess conversion,
and there are large accessions to the churches; nevertheless the results are not such
as to warrant the belief that there has been a corresponding increase of real
spiritual life. The light which flames up for a time soon dies out, leaving the
darkness more dense than before."
" ... The plain warnings of God's word, relating directly to their eternal in-
terests, are unheeded." -Great Controversy, p. 463.
Great Change
o Tuesday August 13
5. What examples show that the Laodicean church has made the third angel's
message tame and voiceless? 1 Cor. 14:8.
NOTE: " ... The smooth sermons so often preached make no lasting impression;
the trumpet does not give a certain sound. Men are not cut to the heart by the
plain, sharp truths of God's word." -Prophets and Kings, p. 140.
" ... Policy has taken the place of faithfulness, and sin is allowed to go un-
reproved .... " Ibid., p. 141.
NOTE: "The Lord has bestowed great blessings upon His church.... But in-
stead of improving upon these gifts and going forward u'nto perfection, she has
fallen away from that which she had attained in her earlier experience. The change
in her spiritual state has come gradually and almost imperceptibly. As she began to
seek the praise and friendship of the world, her faith diminished, her zeal grew
languid, her fervent devotion gave place to dead formality. Every advance step
toward the world was a step away from God. As pride and worldly ambition have
been cherished, the spirit of Christ has departed, and emulation, dissension, and
strife have come in to distract and weaken the church." -Testimonies, vol. 5,
pp. 240, 241.
" ... Ancient Israel were enticed into sin when they ventured into forbidden
-28-
association with the heathen. In a similar manner are modern Israel led
astray.... " -Great Controversy, p. 508.
NOTE: "Like ancient Israel the church has dishonored her God by departing
from the light, neglecting her duties, and abusing her high and exalted privilege of
being peculiar and holy in character. Her members have violated their covenant to
live for God and Him only. They have joined with the selfish and world-loVing.
Pride, the love of pleasure, and sin have been cherished, and Christ has departed.
His Spirit has been quenched in the church.... " -Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 441,
442.
"1 am filled with sadness when I think of our condition as a people. The Lord
has not closed heaven to us, but our own course of continual backsliding has
separated us from God. Pride, covetousness, and love of the world have lived in the
heart without fear of banishment or condemnation. Grievous and presumptuous
sins have dwelt among us. And yet the general opinion is that the church i~
flourishing and that peace and spiritual prosperity are in all her borders.
"The church has turned back from following Christ her Leader and is steadily
retreating toward Egypt. ... " -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 217.
NOTE: " ... The world must not be introduced into the church, and married to
the church, forming a bond of unity. Through this means the church will become
indeed corrupt, and as stated in Revelation, .a cage of every unclean and hateful
bird.'
"Through association with the world our institutions will become unsubstan-
tial, unreliable .. ." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 265.
NOTE: " ... We have a great truth, but through careless indifference the truth
has lost its force upon us. Satan has come in with his specious temptations, and has
led the professed followers of Christ away from their Leader, classing them with
the foolish virgins." -Testimonies to Ministers, p.130.
-29-
"Satan uses those who claim to believe the truth, but whose light has become
darkness, as his mediums to utter his falsehoods and transmit his darkness. They
are foolish virgins indeed, choosing darkness rather than light, and dishonoring
God.... Are we wise virgins, or must we be classed among the foolish? This is the
question which we are deciding today by our character and attitude....
"The state of the Church represented by the foolish virgins, is also spoken of
as the Laodicean state.... " -Review and Herald, August 19, 1890.
10. Under these conditions, what effect does the preaching of the message by
the Laodicean church have upon the world? Rom, 2:24,
NOTE: "The conviction is gaining ground in the world that Seventh-day Adven-
tists are giving the trumpet an uncertain sound, that they are follOwing in the path
of wordlings. .. .'~Testimonies to Ministers, p. 86.

NOTE: .. I saw angels hurrying to and fro in heaven, descending to the earth, and
again ascending to heaven, preparing for the fulfillment of some important event.
Then I saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to the earth, to unite
his voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message.... "
-Early Writings, p. 277.
"The third angel's message is to be given with power. The power of the
proclamation of the first and second messages is to be intensified in the third. In
the Revelation John says of the heavenly messenger who unites with the third
angel: . I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the
earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice.' ... "

2. What kind of man does the Lord call to do the work of the angel of
Revelation 18? 1 Kings 18:18,20; Neh. 13:14,22; Matt. 11:7, 14, 15.
NOTE: " ... God calls for men like Elijah, Nathan, and John the Baptist-men
who will bear His message with faithfulness, regardless of the consequences; men
who will speak the truth bravely, though it call for the sacrifice of all they have."
-Prophets and Kings, p. 142.

like Ezra and Nehemiah, will not palliate or excuse sin, nor shrink from vindicating
the honor of God.... " -Ibid., p. 675.
The Power of the Message Is Intensified
o Monday August 19
3. How does the angel of Revelation 18 intensify the power of the message?
Isa. 58:1,2.
NOTE: "Again, the command is given: 'Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like
a trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their
-31-
sins.' It is not the wicked world, but those whom the Lord designates as 'My
people,' that are to be reproved for their transgressions.... " -Great Controver-
sy, p.452.
" ' ... Wrongs must be called wrongs. Grievous sins must be called by their
right name. All of God's people should come nearer to Him.... Then will they see
sin in the true light and will realize how offensive it is in the sight of God.' 'The
plain, straight testimony must live in the church, or the curse of God will rest upon r
His people as surely as it did upon ancient Israel because of their sins.' "
-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 676.
4. What spiritual need is supplied by the message sent through the angel of
Revelation I8? Rev. 3:18-20.
"The gold that Jesus would have us buy of him is gold tried in the fire; it is the
gold of faith and love, that has no defiling substance mingled with it. The white
raiment is the righteousness of Christ, the wedding garment which Christ alone
can give. The eye-salve is the true spiritual discernment that is so wanting among
us, for spiritual things. must be spiritually discerned.
"To our brethren who are standing in this self-confident, self-satisfied posi-
tion, who talk and act as if there was no need of more light, we want to say that the
Laodicean message is applicable to you .... " -Review and Herald, April I,

The Attitude of the Laodicean Church Toward the Message W
o Tuesday August 20
5. What attitude has the Laodicean church been taking toward the message?
Rev. 3:17 (first part).
-32-
NOTE: "God says to His servants, 'Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a
trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their
sins.' But when the plain, straight testimony comes from lips under the moving of
the Spirit of God, there are many who treat it with disdain. There are among us
those who, in actions if not in words, 'say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets,
Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to
cease from before us...' ." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 89. .
"The Lord has sent a message to arouse His people to repent, and do their
first works; but how has His message been received? .. " -Christ Our
Righteousness, p. 49.
" ... [0Jur own people opposed the work of God by refusing the light of truth
on the righteousness of Christ by faith. This they should have received and
reechoed with heart and voice and pen ...
" ... But when light has come to those at the center of the work, they have not
known how to treat it. ... " -Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 401,402.
" ... They will rise up against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among
God's people.
"I saw that the testimony of the True Witness has not been half heeded. The
solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs has been lightly es-
teemed, if not entirely disregarded.... " -Early Writings, p. 270.
6. What should the Laodicean leaders have done before they could be restored
to divine favor? Ps. 32:5.
NOTE: "The prejudices and opinions that prevailed at Minneapolis are not dead
by any means; the seeds sown there in some hearts are ready to spring into life and
bear a like harvest. The tops have been cut down, but the roots have never been
eradicated ... When, by thorough confession, you destroy the root of bitterness,
you will see light in God's light. Without this thorough work you will never clear
your soul. .. " -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 467.
Consequences
D Wednesday August 21
7. As the Laodicean leaders and church have repeatedly rejected the help that
God sent to her through the message, what is her consequent experience?
NOTE: " ... The church has gone over to the world in transgression of the law,
when the world should have come over to the church in obedience to the law. Dai-
ly the church is being converted to the world." -Christ's Object Lessons, p.3I6.
-33-
b) Withdrawal of the presence of God. 2 Chron. 15:2.
"Who can truthfully say: 'Our gold is tried in the fire; our garments are un-
spotted by the world'? I saw our Instructor pointing to the garments of so-called
righteousness. Stripping them off, He laid bare the defilement beneath. Then He
said to me: 'Can you not see know they have pretentiously covered up their defile-
ment and rottenness of character?' How is the faithful city become an harlot!' My
Father's house is made a house of merchandise, a place whence the divine
presence and glory have departed! For this cause there is weakness, and strength is
lacking.' " -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 250.
" ... When the professed people of God are uniting with the world, living as
they live, and joining with them in forbidden pleasures; when the luxury of the
world becomes the luxury of the church; when the marriage bells are chiming, and
all are looking forward to many years of worldly prosperity-then, suddenly as the
lightning flashes from the heavens, will come the end of their bright visions and
delusive hopes." -Great Controversy, pp. 338, 339.
8. How do we know that God does not accept his people in a mixed condition?
What kind of people does He recognize as his own? Zeph. 3:11-13; 1
Peter 1:15-17.
NOTE: "Jesus is coming; and will He find a people conformed to the world? and
will He acknowledge these as His people that He has purified unto Himself? Oh,
no. None but the pure and holy will He acknowledge as His. Those who have been
purified and made white through suffering, and have kept themselves separate,
unspotted from the world, He will own as His." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 133.
" ... We cannot be half the Lord's and half the world's. We are not God's
people unless we are such entirely.... " -.:...Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 83.
Shaking
o Thursday August 22
9. What provision has the Lord made to have a pure church? Amos 9:9;
Matt. 3:12.
NOTE: " ... God will have a people pure and true. In the mighty sifting soon to
take place we shall be better able to measure the strength of Israel. The signs
reveal that the time is near when the Lord will manifest that His fan is in His hand,
and He will thoroughly purge His floor. " -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 80.
10. What two out of the different factors cause the prophesied shaking?
" ... There is to be a shaking among God's people; but this is not the present
truth to carry to the churches. It will be the result of refusing the truth presented."
-Selected Messages, vol. 2, p. 13.
" ... When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, these sur-
face readers, anchored nowhere, are like shifting sand. They slide into any position
to suit the tenor of their feelings of bitterness.... " -Testimonies to Ministers,

A Serious Conflict
D Sunday August 25
1. What distinction, resultant from the shaking, has to do with the work of the
angel of Revelation 18? Isa. 8:11-20.
NOTE: "God has given me this message to bear to those who are out of line:
[Isa. 8:9-12].
2. On what ground is there a serious conflict between the two distinct parties?
Isa. 59: 13, 14.
NOTE: " ... Truth in its varied phases will be in conflict with error in its ever-
varying, increasing forms, and which, if possible, will deceive the very elect.
" ... There are men who teach the truth, but who are not perfecting their
ways before God, who are trying to conceal their defections and encourage an es-
trangement from God. They have not the moral courage to do the things that it is
for their special benefit to do. They see no necessity for reform ...
"Unsanctified ministers are arraying themselves against God. They are prais-
ing Christ and the god of this world in the same breath. While professedly they
-36-
receive Christ, they embrace Barabbas ... Let the son of deceit and false witness
be entertained by a church that has had great light, great evidence, and that
church will discard the message the Lord has sent, and receive the most un-
reasonable assertions and false suppositions and false theories. Satan laughs at
their folly, for he knows what truth is.
"Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in their
hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan..
. God will make the ears of the hearers tingle if they will not heed His
voice or His message. He will denounce those who resist the word of God.
"Satan has laid every measure possible that nothing shall come among us as a
people to reprove and rebuke us, and exhort us to put away our errors. But there is
a people who will bear the ark of God.... The truth will not be diminished or lose
its power in their hands. They will show the people their transgressions, and the
house of Jacob their sins.
"Many who now claim to believe the truth, but who have no anchor, will be
bound up with Satan's party....
": .. These rejecters of light will remain barren deserts, where no refreshing,
healing waters flow, and their ministrations as barren of moisture as were the hills
of Gilboa, where there was neither dew nor rain .... " -Testimonies to Ministers,
pp. 407-413.
Two Different Attitudes
D Monday August 26
3. What work is to be carried on by one party on behalf of the other party?
Isa. 58:1.
NOTE: "The prophet receives this word from the Lord-a message startling in its
clearness and force:
"[Isa. 58:1 quoted]. Though they are called the people of God, the house of
Jacob, though they profess to be linked with God in obedience and fellowship,
they are far from Him. Wonderful privileges and promises have been given to
them, but they have betrayed their trust. With no words of flattery must the
message be given them. 'Show my people their transgression, and the house of
Jacob their sins.' Show them where they are making a mistake. Set their danger
before them. Tell them of the sins they are committing, while at the same time
they pride themselves on their righteousness.... Worldly policy has come into
their business and religious life. Their hearts are not purified through the truth.
God looks on their outward ceremonies of humility as a solemn mockery. He
regards all religious sham as an insult to Himself.
"Our work now is to rouse the people. Satan with all his angels has come
down with great power, to work with every conceivable deception to counterwork
-37-
the work of God. The Lord has a message for His people. This message will be
borne, whether men will accept or reject it. As in the days of Christ, there will be
the deep plottings of the powers of darkness, but the message must not be muffled
with smooth words or fair speeches ... " -SDA Bible Commen-
tary, vol. 4, p. 1149.
4. What is the main difference between the two parties, to the very end of
probation, as far as dealing with open sin? What are these two parties called?
Ezek. 9:4.
NOTE: "The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and
the salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful
character. ... they feel most deeply the wrongs of God's professed people....
"Who are standing in the counsel of God at this time? Is it those who virtually
excuse srongs among the professed people of God and who murmur in their hearts,
if not openly, against those who would reprove sin? Is it those who take their stand
against them and sympathize with those who commit wrong? ... Those who
receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the Holy Ghost,
represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those' that sigh and that cry for all
the abominations that be done' in the church. " -Testimonies, vol. 3,
pp. 266, 267
Further Differences
o Tuesday August 27
5. What other differences can be seen between these two parties? What are
they called in the Testimonies? Rom. 9:27-29; 11:1-5.
NOTE: "The days will come when the righteous will be stirred to zeal for God
because of the abounding iniquity. None but divine power can stay the arrogance
of Satan united with evil men; but in the hour of the church's greatest danger most
fervent prayer will be offered in her behalf by the faithful remnant ...
. . The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress. Those
who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the ire of the
dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he has gained con-
trol of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that are resisting his
supremacy. If he could blot them' from the earth, his triumph would be com-
plete.... " -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 524,472,473.
6. How is one of these two companies neglecting their preparation for the latter
rain? Matt. 13:15; Rom. 11:7-10.
NOTE: " ... Many who once were earnest Adventists are conforming to the
world -to its practices, its customs, its selfishness. Instead of leading the world to
-38-
render obedience to God's law, the church is uniting more and more closely with
the world in transgression. Daily the church is becoming conv~rted to the
world.... " -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 119.
" ... The world, filled with violence, reveling, and drunkenness, is converting
the church. The law of God, the divine standard of righteousness, is declared to be
of no effect." -Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 43, 44.
" ... By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to
view matters in nearly the same light ... " -Great Controversy, p. 608.
.. I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful and were look-
ing to the time of' refreshing' and the' latter rain' to fit them to stand in the day of
the Lord and to live in His sight. Oh, how many I saw in the time of trouble
without a shelter! They had neglected the needful preparation; therefore they
could not receive the refreshing that all must have to fit them to live in the sight of
a holy God.... " -Early Writings, p. 71.
7. What is the program of the faithful company and their relation to the law of
God? Isa, 62:10; Jer. 6:16,
NOTE: " ... It [the message through Elders Waggoner and Jones] presented
justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the
righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the com-
mandments of God.... " -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 91, 92.
" ... The great reformatory movement must begin in presenting to fathers
and mothers and children the principles of the law of God... ," -Testimonies,
vol. 6, p, 119,
NOTE: .. Here are given the characteristics of those who shall be reformers,
who will bear the banner of the third angel's message, those who avow themselves
God's commandment-keeping people, and who honor God, and are earnestly
engaged, in the sight of all the universe, in building up the old waste places, Who
is it that calls them, The repairers of the breach, The restorers of paths to dwell in?
- It is God. Their names are registered in heaven as reformers, restorers, as raising
the foundations of many generations." -Review and Herald, October 13, 1891.
-39-
" ... If Christ rules in their hearts, they are gaining strength of principle,
power, ability to stand as faithful sentinels, true reformers; for there can be no
reform unless there is a thorough co-operation with Jesus Christ. Through the
grace of Christ, men are to use their God-given faculties to reform themselves; by
this self-denying action, which the Lord of heaven looks upon with approval, they
gain victories over their own hereditary and cultivated tendencies. Then like
Daniel they make impressions upon other hearts that will never be effaced. The in-
fluence will be carried to all parts of the world." -Special Testimonies to
Ministers and Workers, No.9, p. 312.
NOTE: " ... There must be a reformation throughout our ranks; the people must
reach a higher standard before we can expect the power of God to be manifested in
a marked manner for the healing of the sick. ... " -Medical Ministry, p. 16.
"I was shown that if God's people make no efforts on their part, but wait for
the refreshing to come upon them and remove their wrongs and correct their
errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh and
spirit, and fit them.to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they will be found
wanting. The refreshing or power of God comes only on those who have prepared
themselves for it by doing the work which God bids them, namely, cleansing
themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear
of God. " -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 619.
" ... The great final test comes at the close of human·probation, when it will
be too late for the sour-s need to be supplied." -Christ's Object Lessons, p.412.
" ... Those who delay a preparation for the day of God cannot obtain it in the
time of trouble or at any subsequent time. The case of all such is hopeless."
-Great Controversy, p. 620.
10. How are the two parties taking sides in this time of preparation?
Luke 11:23.
NOTE: "Men are taking sides, according to their choice. Those that are feeding
on the word of God will show this by their practice; they are on the Lord's side,
seeking by precept and example to reform the world. All that have refused to be
-40-
taught of God, hold the traditions of men. They at last pass over on the side of the
enemy, against God, and are written, 'antichrist.' The people of God, who unders-
tand our position in this world's history, are, with ears open and hearts softened
and subdued, pressing together in unity-one with Jesus Christ. Those who will
not practise the lessons of Christ, but keep themselves in hand to mold themselves,
find in antichrist the center of their union. While the two parties stand in collision,
the Lord will appear. .. -Special Testimonies to Ministers and Workers,

Lesson 10 September 1 - 7
KEY TEXT: "Thus saith the Lord God; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come."
(Ezek. 7:5).
NOTE: " ... The tempest is coming, and we must get ready for its fury by having
repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord will arise
to shake terribly the earth. We shall see troubles on all sides. Thousands of ships
will be hurled into the depths of the sea. Navies will go down, and human lives will
be sacrificed by millions. Fires will break out unexpectedly, and no human effort
will be able to quench them. The palaces of earth will be swept away in the fury of
the flames. Disasters by rail will become more and more frequent; £onfusion, colli-
sion, and death without a moment's warning will occur on the great lines of travel.
The end is near, probation is closing.... " -Messages to Young People, pp. 89,
90.
2. What shows that the world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis? Matt. 24:6-
8; Luke 21:9-11; Rev. 11:18.
NOTE: "The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living. Rulers and
statesmen, men who occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and
women of all classes, have their attention fixed upon the events taking place about
us. They are watching the relations that exist among the nations. They observe the
intensity that is taking possession of every earthly element, and they recognize that
something great and decisive is about to take place-that the world is on the verge
of a stupendous crisis." -Prophets and Kings, p. 537.
NOTE: "We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times
declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand. The days in which we live are
solemn and important. The Spirit of God is gradually but surely being withdrawn
from the earth. Plagues and judgments are already falling upon the despisers of
the grace of God. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the
alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest
magnitude." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 11.
-42-
"The world is stirred with the spirit of war. The prophecy of the eleventh
chapter of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Soon the scenes of
trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place." -Ibid., p. 14.
NOTE: "Between the laws of men and the precepts of Jehovah will come the last
great conflict of the controversy between truth and error. Upon this battle we are
now entering-a battle not between rival churches contending for the supremacy,
but between the religion of the Bible and the religions of fable and tradition.... "
-Prophets and Kings, p. 625.

5. What time was right upon the people of God already in the last days of Sister
White? Luke 21:12-19.
NOTE: "Fearful tests and trials await the people of God. The spirit of war is stirr-
ing the nations from one end of the earth to the other. ... " -Testimonies,
vol. 9, p.17.
"The time is right upon us when persecution will come to those who proclaim
the truth .... " -Ibid., p. 227.
6. How do we know that restriction of religious liberty will not come suddenly
but is already coming step by step? What may "the former brethren" expect
from the Laodicean church? Matt. 24:9, 10.
NOTE: "As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the
third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the
truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition.... " -Great
Controversy, p. 608.
" ... The authorities will make laws to restrict religious liberty. They will
assume the righ t that is God's alone. They will think they can force the conscience,
which God alone should control. Even now they are :naking a beginning; this work
they will continue to carry forward till they reach a boundary over which they can-
not step. God will interpose in behalf of His loyal, commandment-keeping people.
" ... Many stumble and fall, apostatizing from the faith they once advocated.
Those who apostatize in time of trial will, to secure their own safety, bear false
witness, and betray their brethren.... " -Desire of Ages, p. 630.
" ... When the day comes when the law of God is made void, and the church
is sifted by the fiery trials that are to try all that live upon the earth, a great propor-
tion of those who are supposed to be genuine will give heed to seducing spirits,
and will turn traitors and betray sacred trusts. They will prove our very worst
persecutors....
-43-
"Those who have lived on the flesh and blood of the Son of God-His Holy
Word-will be strengthened, rooted, and grounded in the faith. They will see in-
creased evidence why they should prize and obey the Word of God. With David,
they will say, 'They have made void thy law. Therefore love I thy commandments
above gold; yea, above fine gold.' While others count them dross, they will arise
to defend the faith .... " -SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 6, p. 1065.
Persecution (continued)
o Wednesday September 4
7. What must those who have the Spirit of God necessarily expect?
2 Tim. 3:12.
NOTE: " ... Persecution and reproach await all who are imbued with the Spirit
of Christ. The charaCter of the persecution changes with the times, but the prin-
ciple-the spirit that underlies it-is the same that has slain the chosen of the Lord
ever since the days of Abel." -Acts of Apostles, p. 576.
8. What do the true people of God reveal under trial and persecution? How?
Isa. 60:1.
NOTE: "As the opposition rises to a fiercer height, the servants of God are again
perplexed; for it seems to them that they have brought the crisis. But conscience
and the word of God assure them that their course is right; and although the trials
continue, they ate strengthened to bear them. The cOntest grows closer and
sharper, but their faith and courage rise with the emergency. Their testimony is:
'We dare not tamper with God's word, dividing His holy law; calling .one portion
essential and another nonessential, to gain the favor of tlie world. The Lord whom
we. serve is able to deliver us. Christ has /Conquered the powers of earth; and shall
we be afraid of a world already conquered?' " -Great Controversy, p. 610.
10. What must they feel before the Lord can reveal His power through them?
John 15:5.
-44-
NOTE: " ... They are hedged in with difficulties. Satan assails them with
fierce temptations. The work which they have undertaken seems far beyond their
ability to accomplish. They are threatened with destruction. The enthusiasm
which animated them is gone; yet they cannot turn back. Then, feeling their utter
helplessness, they flee to the Mighty One for strength.... " -Great Controver-
sy, p.609.

Lesson 11 September 8 - 14
KEY TEXT: "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the
Lord, as the waters cover the sea." (Hab. 2:14).
1. What do all true reformers expect as the result of their obedience to the
message of Christ's righteousness (which is the essence of Revelation 3:18)?
Joel 2:28.
NOTE: "I was shown that the testimony to the Laodiceans applies to God's peo-
ple at the present time... But God has given the message time to do its
work. ... It is designed to arouse the people of God, to discover to them their
backslidings, and to lead to zealous repentance, that they may be favored with the
presence of Jesus, and be fitted for the loud cry of the third angel ... "
-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 186.
2. What must be their missionary experience before they can receive the latter
rain? What kind of missionary activity is of decisive importance?
Mark 16:15; Matt. 24:14.
NOTE: "The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole
earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know
by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have en-
tire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact
by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this. will not be while the
largest portion of the .church are not laborers together with God. -Review and
Herald, July 21, 1896." -Christian Service, p. 253.
NOTE: "1 was shown the inhabitants of the earth in the utmost confusion. War,
bloodshed, privati~m, want, famine, and pestilence were abroad in the land. As
these things surrounded God's people, they began to press together, and to cast
aside their little difficulties.... " -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 268.
" ... The people of God will draw together and present to the enemy a united
front. In view of the common peril, strife for supremacy will cease; there will be no
disputing as to who shall be accounted greatest. No one of the true believers will
say: 'I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas.' The testimony of one and all
will be: I cleave unto Christ; I rejoice in Him as my personal Saviour.'
"Thus will the truth be brought into practical life, and thus will be answered
the prayer of Christ, uttered just before His humiliation and death: 'That they all
may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one
in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.' John 17:21. The love
of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world that we have been with
Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the third angel swell to a loud
cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the glory of the Lord."
-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401.
4. At what stage of their reformatory journey will they have a complete refor-
mation? Song of Solomon 6:10.
NOTE: " ... I dreamed of being with a large body of people. A portion of this
assembly started out prepared to journey. We had heavily loaded wagons. As we
journeyed, the road seemed to ascend....
"As we journeyed on, the road grew narrower and steeper. ...
" ... We then cut the luggage from the horses, and it fell over the
precipice....
"As the path grew more narrow, we decided that we could no longer go with
safety on horseback, and we left the horses and went on foot, in single file, one
following in the footsteps of another. ... The path finally became so narrow that
we concluded that we could travel more safely without our shoes, so we slipped
them from our feet and went on some distance without them. Soon it was decided
that we could travel more safely without our stockings; these were removed, and
we journeyed on with bare feet." -Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 594, 595.
6. When they reach this point, how restricted will Satan be in the use of his
power over them?
NOTE: " ... Evil angels still pressed around them, but could have no power over
them." -Early Writings, p.271.
NOTE: ". ~ . God's displeasure is upon His people, and He will not manifest His
power in the midst of them while sins exist among them and are fostered by those
in responsible positions." -Testimonies, vol. 3, p.270.
"The angel with the writer's ink horn is to place a mark upon the foreheads of
all who are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel follows this
angeL" -SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 4, p. 1161.
NOTE: "In the visions of the night, representations passed before me of a great
reformatory movemeI1t among God's people. Many were praising God. The sick
were healed, and other miracles were wrought. A spirit of intercession was seen,
even as was manifested before the' great Day of Pentecost. Hundreds and
thousands were seen visiting families and opening before them the word of God.
Hearts were convicted by the power of the Holy Spirit, and a spirit of genuine con-
version was manifest. On every side doors were thrown open to the proclamation
of the truth. The world seemed to be lightened with the heavenly influence. Great
blessings were received by the true and humble people of God. I heard voices of
thanksgiving and praise, and there seemed to be a reformation such as Woe witness-
ed in 1844." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 126.
" ... The messengers of Heaven are to be seen running to and fro, seeking in
every possible way to warn the people of the coming judgments, and presenting
the glad tidings of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. The standard of
righteousness is to be exalted. The Spirit of God is moving upon men's heart's, and
-48-
those who respond to its influence will become lights in the world. Everywhere
they are seen going forth to communicate to others the light they have received as
they did after the descent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. And as they
let their light shine, they receive more and more of the Spirit's power. The earth is
lightened with the glory of God.
"But, 0, said picture! ... He will take his Holy Spirit from the church and
give it to others who will appreciate it.
"There is no greater evidence that those who have received great light do not
appreciate that light, than is given by their refusal to let their light shine upon
those who are in darkness, and devoting their time and energies in celebrating
forms and ceremonies. Thoughts of the inner work, the necessary purity of heart,
are not entertained. The absence of harmony with God becomes apparent. The
light grows dim, goes out; the candlestick has been removed.... " -Review and
Herald, July 16, 1895.
NOTE: " ... But God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation of
His judgments these faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not of her
sins and 'receive not of her plagues.' Hence the movement symbolized by the
angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and crying
mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. In connection with
his message the call is heard: 'Come out of her, My people.' These an-
nouncements, uniting with the third angel's message, constitute the final warning
to be given to the inhabitants of the earth." -Great Controversy, p. 604.
"The time of God's destructive judgments is the time of mercy for those who
have no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them.
His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door
is closed to those who would not enter. Large numbers will be admitted who in
these last days hear the truth for the first time." -SDA Bible Commentary,
vol. 7, p. 979.
10. What attitude will be taken by the Laodicean leaders toward the loud cry?
" ... So it will be in these last days. The cause of Christ will be betrayed.
Those who have had the light of truth, and have enjoyed its blessings, but who
have turned away from it, will fight down the Spirit of God. Inspired with a spirit
from beneath, they will tear down that which they once built up, and show to all
reasonable, God-fearing souls that they can not be trusted. They may lay claim to
truth and righteousness, but their spirit and works will testify that they are
betrayers of their Lord. The attributes of Satan they call the movings of the Holy
Spirit." -Review and Herald, May 24, 1898.

Lesson 12 September 15 - 21
KEY TEXT: "And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war
with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of
God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." (Rev. 12:17).
1. What will soon be forever decided? But what are we to do now? What
question are we to put to the people everywhere? Rev. 17:14.
NOTE: "The great conflict that Satan created in the heavenly courts is soon, very
soon, to be forever decided. Soon all the inhabitants of the earth will have taken
sides, either for or against the government of heaven. Now, as never before, Satan
is exercising his deceiving power to mislead and to destroy every unguarded soul.
We are called upon to arouse the people to prepare for the great issues before
them, , , . To the people far and near we are to bring home the question: 'Are you
following the great apostate in disobedience to God's law, or are you following the
Son of God, who declared, '1 have kept My Father's commandments'?'''
-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 141.
2. What will be the last act in the whole drama? Rev. 13:14-17.
NOTE: " ... The substitution of the laws of men for the law of God, the exalta-
tion, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath, is the
last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God will reveal
Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth .... "
-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 141.
3. Why has God so far impeded this last act? Acts 17 :30.
NOTE: "To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand
for a Sunday law, Those who fear God cannot accept an institution that violates a
precept of the Decalogue. On this battlefield comes the last great conflict of the
controversy between truth and error. .. ,
" ... He [God] will restrain the forces of darkness until the warning is given to
the world and all who will heed it are prepared for the conflict. " -Testimonies,
vol. 5, pp. 451, 453. '
-51-
4. When will the final test under the Sunday decree come? What history will be
repeated? John 3:19.
NOTE: " ... The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is
to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently." -Great Controversy,
p.605.
"After the truth has been proclaimed as a witness to all nations, every con-
ceivable power of evil will be set in operation.... There will be a removing of the
landmarks, and an attempt to t.ear down the pillars of our faith. A more decided ef-
fort will be made to exalt the false sabbath, and to cast contempt upon God
Himself by supplanting the day He has blessed and sanctified. This false sabbath is
to be enforced by an oppressive law." -SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 7, p. 985.
5. When the final warning (loud cry) has been given, and the Sunday decree is
urged upon us, what instruction will then be of .special value to us? What
history will be repeated? Gen. 19:12.
NOTE: " ... As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for
flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption on power of the part of our na-
tion in the decree enforcing the papal sabbath will be a warning to us. It will then
be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired
homes in secluded places among the mountains.... " -Testimonies, vol. 5,
pp. 464, 465.
Experience of the Laodicean Church
o Tuesday September 17·
6. In repetition of history, what attitude will be taken by the Laodicean church
at this time? Who will come out of her when the prolonged shaking process
reaches its climax? Isa. 30:1,2.
NOTE: "The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The
mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to
worldly demands and confotmed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter
to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult,
threatened imprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments
of God and the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated
from the dross in the church.... " Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 81.
"I saw that God has honest children among the nominal Adventists and the
fallen churches, and before the plagues shall be poured out, ministers and people
will be called out from these churches ... But the light will shine, and all who are
honest will leave the fallen churches, and take their stand with the remnant."
-Early Writings, p. 261.
7. What will the Laodicean church then do to the group of "former brethren",
who has given the final warning (loud cry)? Matt. 10:17; 24:9.
NOTE: " ... [W]hen the test is brought, they [the "large class" of SDA's] are
prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who
-52-
once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They
become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren...." -Great Con-
troversy, p. 608.
"I saw [that] the nominal churches and nominal Adventists, like Judas, would
betray us to the Catholics to obtain their influence to come against the truth. The
saints then will be an obscure people, little known to the Catholics; but the
churches and nominal Adventists who know of our faith and customs ... will
betray the saints and report them to the Catholics as those who disregard the in-
stitutions of the people; that is, that they keep the Sabbath, and disregard Sun-
day." -Unpublished Manuscript Testimonies of E. G. White, October 23, 1850.
NOTE: "While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers,
receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine
authority, receive the seal of God." -Great Controversy, p.605.
9. Why will the Laodicean church forfeit the seal of God? Rev. 3:15-17;
Ezek. 9:9, 10.
NOTE: " ... But the glory of the Lord had departed from Israel; although many
still continued the forms of religion, His power and presence were lacking.
" ... [P]ride, avarice, selfishness, and deception of almost every kind are in
the church. The Spirit of God, which prompts to reproof, is trampled underfoot,
while the servants of Satan triumph. God is dishonored, the truth made of none
effect." -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 210,211.
Close of Probation
D Thursday September 19
10. What will happen as soon as the seal of God has been applied? Rev. 22:11.
NOTE: " ... An angel returning from the earth announces that his work is done;
the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved
themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received 'the seal of the living God.'
Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He lifts His hands and
with a loud voice s.ays, 'It is done;' and all the angelic host layoff their crowns as
He makes the solemn announcement: 'He that is unjust, let him be unjust still;
and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be
righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.' .. ." -Great Controver-
sy, p. 613.

REMEMBER THE THIRTEENTH SABBATH OFFERING
(see back page for details)
Lesson 13 September 22 - 28
KEY TEXT: "And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which
standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of
trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even. to that same
time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that
shall be found written in the book." (Dan. 12:1).
a) One will feel the stroke of the wrath of God. Ezek. 9 :5-8.
NOTE: "Here we see that the church-the Lord's sanctuary-was the first to feel
the stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men, those to whom God had given
great light and who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people,
had betrayed their trust. ... " -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 211.
b) The other will be protected against the wrath of God. Mal. 3:17; Ps. 91:4-8.
"The day of wrath to the enemies of God is the day of final deliverance to His
church ... the remnant church ... " -Prophets and Kings, pp. 727, 728.
NOTE: "When God's presence was finally withdrawn from the Jewish nation,
priests and people knew it not. Though under the control of Satan, and swayed by
the most horrible and malignant passions, they still regarded themselves as the
chose of God. The ministration in the temple continued; sacrifices were offered
upon its polluted altars, and daily the divine blessing was invoked upon a people
guilty of the blood of God's dear Son and seeking to slay His ministers and
apostles. So when the irrevocable decision of the sanctuary has been pronounced
a.nd the destiny of the world has been forever fixed, the inhabitants of the earth
will know it not. The forms of religion will be continued by a people from whom
the Spirit of God has been finally withdrawn; and the s~tanic zeal with which the
-54-
prince ot evil will inspire them for the accomplishment of his malignant designs,
will bear the semblance of zeal for God." -Great Controversy, p. 615.
NOTE: "Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final
trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human pas-
sion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in
ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old." -Great Con-
troversy, p. 614.
4. What decree will be issued against the commandment keepers? What argu-
ment will be used? Rev. 13:15; John 11:50.
NOTE: " ... It will be urged that the few who stand in opposition to an institu-
tion of the church and a law or the state ought not to be tolerated; that it is better
for them to suffer than for whole nations to be thrown into confusion and
lawlessness. The same argument eighteen hundred years ago was brought' against
Christ by the' rulers of the people.' 'It is expedient for us,' said the wily Caiaphas,
'that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.'
John 11 :50. This argument will appear conclusive; and a decree will finally be
issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment,
denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment and giving the people
liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World and
apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who
honor all the divine precepts." -Great Controversy, pp. 615, 616.
NOTE: "The people of God will then be plunged into those scenes of affliction
and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob's trouble. , , ," -Great
Controversy, p. 616.
6. What will be the main reason for their acute mental suffering? Rev. 3:10.
NOTE: "Though God's people will be surrounded by enemies who are bent upon
their destruction, yet the anguish which they suffer is not a dread of persecution
for the truth's sake; they fear that every sin has not been repented of, and that
through some fault in themselves they will fail to realize the fulfillment of the
Saviour's promise: I 'will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come
-55-
upon all the world.' Revelation 3:10. If they could have the assurance of pardon
they would not shrink from torture or death; but should they prove unworthy, and
lose their lives because of their own defects of character, then God's holy name
would be reproached." -Great Controversy, p. 619.
NOTE: " ... A decree went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day
and night for deliverance. This was the time of Jacob's trouble. Then all the saints
cried out with anguish of spirit, and were delivered by the vOice of God.... 1
heard them cry with a loud voice, 'We have believed in Thy coming, and taught it
with energy.' And while they were speaking, their eyes would fall upon their gar-
ments and see the writing, and then they would wail aloud. I saw that they had
drunk of the deep waters, and fouled the residue with their feet-trodden the Sab-
bath underfoot-and that was why they were weighed in the balance and found
wanting." -Early Writings, pp. 36,37.
NOTE: "It is at midnight that God manifests His power for the deliverance of His
people.... In the midst of the angry heavens is one clear space of indescribable
glory, whence comes the voice of God like the sound of many waters, saying: 'It is
done.' Revelation 16:17.
"That voice shakes the heavens and the earth. There is a mighty earthquake,
"such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so
great.' ... The proudest cities of the earth are laid low. The lordly palaces, upon
which the world's great men have lavished their wealth in order to glorify
themselv.es, are crumbling to ruin before their eyes. Prison walls are rent asunder,
and God's people, who have been held in bondage for their faith, are set free."
-Great Co"ntroversy, pp. 636, 637.
9. Who will then be resurrected and for what purpose? Dan. 12:2.
NOTE: "Graves are opened, and 'many of them that sleep in the dust of the
earth... awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting con-
tempt.' Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the third angel's message
come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God's covenant of peace with those
who have kept His law.... " -Great Controversy, p. 637.
The End
o Thursday September 26
10. When and how will the Laodicean church recognize the remnant church?
Rev. 3:9.
-56-
NOTE: " ... Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us
who could wash one another's feet and salute the brethren with a holy kiss, and
they worshiped at our feet." -Early Writings, p. 15.
"You think, that those who worship before the saint's feet, (Rev. 3:9), will at
last be saved. Here I must differ with you; for God shew me that this class were
professed Adventists, who had fallen away, and' crucified to themselves the Son of
God afresh, and put him to an open shame.' And in the 'hour of temptation,' which
is yet to come, to show out everyone's true character, they will know that they are
forever lost; and overwhelmed with anguish of spirit, they will bow at the saint's
feet." -A Word to the Little Flock, p. 12.
D. At the coming of Christ, what distinction will there be between the wicked
and the saints? Rev. 6:15-17; Isa. 25:9.
