Second term Exam 1L1

Part One: Reading

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one location to another. In ancient times,
people have used domestic animals for thousands of years. The horse with its superior speed and range
has been the favourite animal for transportation use. However, this means was not satisfactory since it did
not carry many goods. So wheeled vehicles were made to make the movement of goods easier. The chariot
or the wagon, pulled by humans or animals was the first wheeled vehicle. Yet the chariot did not meet the
needs of the developing world. Therefore, in the early 1800’s, the steam locomotive on iron rails was used
to replace horses and pulling trains of passengers and goods.

At the beginning of the 20th century, gasoline powered automobiles were invented in France. Though
they allowed people to travel faster, they could not cross mountains nor the seas. So, in 1903, the
American Brothers Wright solved the problem by inventing the airplane which has been developed in
shape and speed.
