POLYGONS
Polygon : It is a closed plane figure bounded by three or more than three straight lines.
e.g., triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagonand,
decangon.
Convex Polygon: A polygon in which none of its interior angle is more than 180 , is known
as a convex polygon.’
Concave Polygon : A polygon in which atleast one interior angle is more than180 then it is
said to be concave.
Regular Polygon : A polygon in which all the sides are equal and also all the interior angles
are equal, is called a regular polygon.
For regular polygons
1. Sum of all interior angles = (n-2) x 180
= (2n-4) x90
2. Each interior angle = ( )=180-exterior angle
3. Each exterior angle = ( ) (in degrees)
4. Sum of all exterior angle = 360
5. Number of sides in a polygon = = 2(x+1) ( )
6. Number of diagonals = n C2 – n =
Where n .
7. Star : Sum of angles of a n point star = (n-4
8. Area of a polygon = x cot ( )
Solved Examples:
1) In a polygon the measure (in degrees) of each angle is a distinct integer. If the largest
angle is 1450 and the polygon has maximum number of sides possible, then its
largest exterior angle is
1) 9 2) 7 3) 10 4) 8 5) 11
If largest angle is 1450, let us find the maximum number of sides of the polygon. The sum
of all internal angles is (n-2)∏ and the sum of all external angle is 3600.
Let us assume it is a decagon. The sum of all internal angles is 1440. If the largest angle is
145.The other angles can be 144,143, 142, 141,140,139,138,137,136. Total sum is 1405.
Let us assume it is a nonagon. If the largest angle is 145. The other angles can be
144,143,142,141,140,139,138 & 128. The total sum of internal angles is 1260.
3) The internal angles of a polygon are in arithmetic Progression. The smallest angle
measures 650 and the common difference is 18 ¾0 . The number of sides of the
polygon is
1) 8 2) 9 3) 10 4) 7 5) 11
As the value on the right hand side is an integer, (n-1) should be divisible by 8. Hence
substituting n= 9 , we get 1260 as the sum of all internal angles of a 9 sided figure.
