Q1. Two points A(𝒙𝟏 , 𝒚𝟏 ) and B(𝒙𝟐 , 𝒚𝟐 ) move to A′ (𝒙′𝟏 , 𝒚′𝟏 ) and B′ (𝒙′𝟐 , 𝒚′𝟐 ) with
respect to fixed coordinates in xy-plane.
Here:
𝒙𝟏 = 2.0 𝒚𝟏 = 3.0 𝒙𝟐 = 4.1 𝒚𝟐 = 7.2
𝒙′𝟏 = 2.1 𝒚′𝟏 = 2.85 𝒙′𝟐 = 4.18 𝒚′𝟐 = 7.24
Calculate the normal and shearing strains (𝝐𝒙 , 𝝐𝒚 and 𝜸𝒙𝒚 ). Then calculate the
extension and rotation of the line AB to 𝑨′ 𝑩′ .

Q2. The reading of normal (or direct) strains
in a strain rosette are given in the figure. 𝝐𝑩 = 200 x 10-6
Calculate the principal strains and then
the principal stresses. 60o 𝝐𝑨 = 200 x 10-6
E = 200 x 103 N/mm2, and 𝝊 =0.3.

𝝐𝑪 = −300 x 10-6

Q3. The normal and shearing stresses on the faces of a rectangular block in x, y and z
are:

𝝈𝒙 = ? (to be determined) 𝝉𝒙𝒚 = 𝝉𝒚𝒙 = 10 N/mm2

𝝈𝒚 = −12 N/mm2 (compressive) 𝝉𝒚𝒛 = 𝝉𝒛𝒚 = −6 N/mm2

𝝈𝒛 = − 2 N/mm2 (compressive) 𝝉𝒛𝒙 = 𝝉𝒙𝒛 = 5 N/mm2

The material fails in a tensile stress of 23 N/mm2. Calculate 𝝈𝒙 to cause failure.

Also determine the direction cosines of the normal to the plane of failure.
