The document discusses various design calculations including O-ring calculations, stresses, tightening torque, and internal/external pressures for pipes.

The main topics covered include O-ring and S-seal calculations, stresses such as tensile, shear and bearing, thread calculations, closure bolting, and internal/external pipe pressure calculations.

O-ring design involves calculating parameters such as % stretch, % squeeze, extrusion gap, and considering the O-ring material properties and gland geometry. Master design programs are used as inputs for the calculations.

Important parameters in O-ring design
% Stretch is the amount of stretch when installed in the gland
having less height than the O-ring cross-section

% Squeeze is the deflection of O-ring cross section resulting

from installation in the gland.

An important consideration in
O-ring design is
Extrusion Gap (Clearance)

Extrusion
Gap

An O-ring is representing a seal in a groove for

illustration but the principles for Extrusion gap
is also true for most of the OD type seals such
as OD S seals, B type S seals, O-rings, etc.

once installed in a groove.

Important parameters in seal design
% Squeeze is defined as the difference between the Seal
Cross-section and the dimensional gap between the groove
diameter and the Bore ID

December 2012 Basic Design Calculation

Important parameters in seal design
% Volume Fill is defined as the ratio of seal volume to groove
volume.
*Note: Derivation of Seal volume and Groove Volume is beyond
scope.

% of groove = (Seal OD – Groove ID)x 100. This defines the

SHEAR STRESS CALCULATION
SOURCE : DESIGN GUIDELINE DGL10023076

Shear stress are usually performed on Pins and key stock which are used in
many applications:
• As permanent pinning devices to prevent motion or lock one component
relative to another during assembly. e.g. an inner body keyed to the upper
flange ring on a Torus connector, milled and set after it has been landed on a
mandrel hub with a VX gasket, or a key between a drive shaft and its pulley.
These pins are usually referred to as retainer pins, keys, or anti-rotation pins
and are not designed to shear, bend, or break.

SHEAR STRESS CALCULATION
SOURCE : DESIGN GUIDELINE DGL10023076

Pins and key stock are used in many applications:

• As temporary pinning devices between parts
designed to maintain relative position between
two components relative to one another until
there is a specific applied load to the assembly.
The pins are designed to shear and part at a
predetermined value in operation, allowing
relative movement between components. These
pins are usually referred to as shear pins.

THREAD – SHEAR AND BEARING STRESS
ACME Thread
ACME Thread is most common thread used.
Under Tension, ACME thread suffer both BEARING AND SHEAR stresses as
per DGL10023076. Calculation is necessary to verify combined stress level is
acceptable limit. Typically LENGTH-OF-ENGAGEMENT is determined.
4 TYPES OF ACME : NA (NATIONAL ACME), SA (STUB ACME), SAM (STUB
ACME MODIFIED), SAM2 (STUB ACME MODIFIED 2)
NA – MAX BEARING AREA, THREAD HEIGHT IS 0.5P; FOR THICK WALL,
FREQUENT MAKE-UP / BREAK-UP
SA – WHERE SHALLOW THREAD DEPTH IS REQUIRED. THREAD HEIGHT
IS 0.3P.
SAM1 – THREAD HEIGHT 0.375P.
SAM2 – LEAST BEARING AREA, SHORTEST THREAD HEIGHT (0.25P);
FOR MIN WALL APPLICATION

CLOSURE BOLTING

API 6A states :

December 2012 Basic Design Calculation

CLOSURE BOLTING
If not followed, we’d get this :

December 2012 Basic Design Calculation

CLOSURE BOLTING
Calculation for bolting is not required for usage on API standard flange sizes.
Bolting size and numbers of bolting to be required shall follow AWHEM technical
report TR9501.
Exercise : Determine the Bolt size for 5-1/8 -10K API FLANGE. Verify whether
80Ksi yield strength bolt material is sufficient for the application. Also confirm the
thread size is good if using the correct bolt material.
From FMC Intranet 6A Product Information or API 6A,
STUD SIZE = 1.1250-8UN x 9.250 and No of studs = 12
Gasket size BX-169 -> Seal Dia.
Use MathCad and per API recommendation of 50% preload, the preload for 80Ksi
YS material is < pressure load. For 105Ksi YS Bolt material, the preload is >
pressure load. -> Check Product Information. From MathCad, Design factor for
the thread using 105Ksi YS material is 2.2. 80K YS material not available

THREAD - Tightening Torque

Applying Right Torque is crucial - it’s a Critical Component of Quality.

Higher preload improves fatigue performance and locking effect
THREAD - Tightening Torque

Analogy of Bolt Tightening

1) The scale with150 lb. weight is analogous to

150 lb. pre-tension (pre-load) in the bolt.
2) A block is forced in position as shown and
the 150 lb. weight is removed.
3) Fig (b) represents a bolted assembly having
a bolt preload of 150 lb. and an external
load of 20 lb.
4) Adding the load of 20 lb. does not increase
the tension in Shank A , which represents
the bolt
5) If the tension were greater than 150 lb. , the
scale will read more than 150 lb. and the
block will fall out.
THREAD - Tightening Torque
Tightening Torque data:
1. USE API 6A TABLE D.2 (PAGE 294) – API specific
2. FMC document Torque Value PRD-0000021662
3. Use formula in Mathcad
