RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100

Note: 1) Question paper contains Three parts.

2) All parts and all questions are compulsory.
3) The figures given on the right indicate marks.

PART - I

1) Attempt any Four of the following: (5×4=20)

a) Discuss problems encountered by researchers in India.
b) Explain the meaning of research hypothesis in context of research design.
c) Differentiate between experimental and control groups.
d) Describe the different steps involved in a research process.
e) Differentiate between bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis.
f) Describe the precautions that the researcher should take while interpreting the findings.
g) Discuss the characteristics of a good research report.

PART - II

2) a) What should be the size of the sample if a simple random sample from a population of 4000 items is to be drawn to
estimate the per cent defective within 2 per cent of the true value with 95.5 per cent probability? Value of p = 0.02.
z = 2.005 (as per table of area under normal curve for the given confidence level of 95.5%). (10)
b) Calculate the size of sample for infinite population in the given question. (10)
c) Management of Hotel Taj, Lucknow is interested in determining the percentage of the hotel’s guests who stay for
more than 3 days. The reservation manager wants to be 95 per cent confident that the percentage has been
estimated to be within ± 3% of the true value. What is the most conservative sample size needed for this problem?
Value of p = 0.5.
z = 1.96 (as per table of area under normal curve for the given confidence level of 95%). (10)

PART - III

3) What do you mean by research? Classify different types of research with the help of suitable examples. (12.5)
Or
Explain the meaning and significance of a research design. Discuss important concepts related to research design.
(12.5)
4) What do you mean by Sample Design? Discuss different types of sampling techniques with the help of suitable
examples. (12.5)
Or
Discuss different methods of collecting data with the help of suitable examples. Differentiate between Observation and
Interview. (12.5)
5) Explain the meaning of analysis of variance. Describe briefly the technique of analysis of variance for one way and
two way classifications. (12.5)
Or
Discuss various kinds of charts and diagrams used in data analysis. Elaborate the use of SPSS in data analysis. (12.5)

3) The figures given on the right indicate marks.

PART - I

1) Attempt any Four parts of the following: (5×4=20)

a) What do you mean by research? Explain its significance in modern times.
b) What is measurement? Explain the different types of scales used in research.
c) Describe the techniques of defining a research problem.
d) Discuss the concept of pilot testing.
e) Why tabulation is considered essential in a research study? Discuss the characteristics of good table.
f) Write short notes on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

PART - II
2) a) A population is divided into three strata so that N 1 = 5000, N2 = 2000 and N3 = 3000. Respective standard
deviations are:
1 = 15
2 = 18
3 = 5
How should a sample of size n = 84 be allocated to the three strata, if we want optimum allocation using
disproportionate sampling design? (15)
b) In a random selection of 64 of the 2400 intersections in a small city, the mean number of scooter accidents per
year was 3.2 and the sample standard deviation was 0.8:
i) Work out the standard error of mean for this finite population. (7.5)
ii) If the desired confidence level is 0.90, what will be the upper and lower limits of then confidence interval for
the mean number of accidents per intersection per year? z = 1.645 (as per table of area under normal curve for
the given confidence level of 90%). (7.5)
PART - III

in favour of his plaintiff.” Discuss the statement pointing out the objective of research. (12.5)
Or
Discuss different types of research design in different type of research studies; elucidate with the help of suitable
examples. (12.5)
4) What do you mean by Sample Design? What points should be taken into consideration by a researcher in developing a
sample design? (12.5)
Or
Classify different methods of collecting data with the help of suitable examples. Differentiate between Questionnaires
and Schedules. (12.5)
5) “Processing of data implies editing, coding, classification and tabulation.” Describe in brief these four operations
pointing out the significance of each in context of research study. (12.5)
Or
