Chemical Apparatus

Drop pipette and Graduated (Measuring Pipette)

In the laboratory, there are a lot of chemical apparatus that used for helping to do
experiments. Many kinds of apparatus could be found in the laboratory with different shape,
function, size, and material made. The examples of apparatus are beaker, graduated cylinder,
test tube, drop pipette, and graduated pipette (measuring pipette). In this essay will be
discussed about two kinds of pipette that are drop pipette and graduated pipette. It is
important to know what the pipette look like or how is the shape, the function and the
material made.
One type of pipette in the laboratory is drop pipette. Drop pipette is cylindrical in
shape and there is a rubber bulb on the top of drop pipette. Mostly, drop pipette is made of
glass. Drop pipette is used to transfer a small volume of liquid or solution from one container
to another. Actually, the principle work of drop pipette is simple but if the people did not
know how to use it in a right way, they will feel difficult to use. In this case will be discussed
how to use drop pipette in a right way. First, press the rubber bulb on the top of drop pipette
and then dip the pipette into the solution. Make sure the position of drop pipette is 45 degree
when the pipette was dip in the solution and when the pipette was move from one container
to the other. After that, release the rubber bulb and then the solution will be come out. After
using drop pipette, wash it by tap water and open the rubber bulb before washing. Then, dry it
and take in a right place after washing it.

The other type of pipette is graduated pipette. Graduated pipette is look like a
volumetric pipette, but graduated pipette did not have a spool on the top of its body and it
also has a scale. Graduated pipette is made of glass. It is cylindrical in shape like the other
pipette. There is several size of graduated pipette, such as: 5 mL, 10 mL and 25 mL.
Graduated pipette or measuring pipette is used to take a solution in certain volume and it also
to transfer liquid or solution in a specific amount of liquid based on the scale from one
container to another. Set the rubber bulb on the top of graduated pipette to take the solution.
If the rubber bulb did not attached, graduated pipette cannot use. Do not be sucked with the
mouth, it is danger. After using graduated pipette, wash it in tap water before that release the
rubber bulb and then put in a right place because graduated pipette is include in glassware.

Figure 2. Graduated Pipette

From the explanation above can conclude that drop pipette and graduated pipette are
including in glassware. They are cylindrical in shape. The function is almost same to transfer
liquid or solution from one container into another. But they are also have differences,
graduated pipette longest than drop pipette and graduated pipette has a scale on its body to
make easier when someone want to take a liquid or solution.
