Experiment 1

BUILDING A SIMPLE NETWORK: Peer to Peer

Name: ____________________________________ Section: _____________

Professor: ________________________________ Date: ________________

DURATION: 3 Hours

OBJECTIVES:

To determine the MAC and IP address of computer.

To design and built a simple peer to peer network.
To verify the connectivity using the ping command.

BACKGROUND:

The Media Access Control (MAC) address is unique identifier assigned to every
host and it is use for network interfaces for communications on the physical network
segment. MAC address is 48 bits wide or 6 bytes burned by manufacturer onto the
Network Interface Card (NIC). It is also known as Burned-In-Address (BIA), Ethernet
Hardware Address (EHA), hardware of physical address.

The IP address is similar to the address of a person. It is known as a logical

address because it is assigned logically based on where the host is located.

The IP address contains two parts; identifies the local network and individual
host. Both the physical MAC and logical IP addresses are required for a computer to
communicate on a hierarchical network.

For this experiment, two computers will be connected using cross-over cable.
Each host IP addresses and subnet mask will be configured to base on created simple
plan. Moreover, connections will be tested using ping command.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT:

Computer or Laptop with Internet Access

Ethernet Crossover Cable
Ethernet Straight-Through Cable

PROCEDURE:

Part 1: Determining the MAC Address of a Computer

Note: Make sure that your computer is connected to a network or internet.

a. Open the windows command prompt (CMD). This can be done by clicking the
Start button and at the search box, type cmd and click Enter. A window
command prompt shall appear as shown in Figure 2.1.

b. In the command prompt type ipconfig /all command.

Part 3: Building a Peer to Peer Network

a. Create a simple plan of your peer-to-peer network. Place your drawing in the box
provided below. Label PC1 with IP address of 192.168.2.1 and PC2 with IP
address of 192.168.2.2. Specify the type of cable youre going to use.

b. Click the Start > Control Panel > System and Security> System in each
computer. Identify their computer name and MAC addresses.

PC1:
Computer Name:________________________________________
Ethernet MAC Address : _______________________________

PC2:
Computer Name:________________________________________
Ethernet MAC Address : _______________________________

c. Click Ok to close the System Properties window.

d. Using a crossover Ethernet cable, connect the two laptops. As you insert the
cable, you should hear a click sound which indicates that the cable is properly
inserted into the port.

e. Check the connections in both computers. A light usually green or amber

indicates that physical connectivity has been established between the two NICs.

f. Check the computer names of each PCs. Note, each computer should have
unique name. Make adjustments as necessary.

g. Go to the Control Panel, double click the Network and Sharing Center icon.
Check in the Manage Network Connections if the LAN connection is
established.

h. Configure the logical addresses of two PCs so that they are able to communicate
using TCP/IP protocol. Kindly follow the instructions given in i to k.

i. In PC1, go to the Control Panel> Network and Internet> Network and Sharing
Center> Change adapter settings> and right click the Local Area
Connection. Click the properties and click continue.

j. Click the Internet Protocol Version 4 and click the Properties button. Click the
radio button of Use the following IP address and type the IP address of PC1
and click Ok.

k. Disable the firewall setting.

l. Do the same procedure i to k to the PC2 using the assigned IP address for PC2.
