3.0
Filtration
Media
3.1 General

3.1.1 Effective size is defined as the size of opening that will pass 10% by weight
of the filter material.

3.1.2 Uniformity coefficient is defined as the ratio of the size of opening that will
pass 60% by weight of the filter material divided by the size of opening that
will pass 10%, by weight, of the same sample.

3.1.3 All material shall be new and unused.

3.2 Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a form of carbon that is activated by oxidation to develop a

porous carbon structure. It is used primarily to remove chlorine from water. It
should be noted that wet activated carbon depletes oxygen from air. Whenever
workers enter a vessel containing carbon all precautions must be taken since
dangerously low levels of oxygen may be encountered. The appropriate
sampling and work procedures must be followed.

All granular activated carbon shall be acid-washed prior to shipment. All

granular activated carbon shall comply with the following characteristics:

U.S. standard series sieve size 12 x 40

Carbon greater than a number 12 sieve size 5% by weight (maximum)
Carbon less than a number 40 sieve size 5% by weight (maximum)
Mean particle diameter range from 0.9 mm to 1.1 mm
Uniformity coefficient
(after backwashed & drained) 1.8 (maximum)
Apparent density (prior to backwash) 0.44 gm/cu cm (min), 27.5 lb/cu ft
0.48 gm/cu cm (max), 30 lb/cu ft
Abrasion number 70 minimum
Moisture content 2% by weight maximum
Iodine number 900 mg/gm minimum
Surface area 1000 sq m/gm minimum
Pore volume 0.9 ml/gm minimum
Water soluble ash 4% maximum

3.3 Anthracite

Anthracite is a hard coal that is used as a filter media to remove suspended

solids from the water. All material shall be double-washed and shall be free of
clay, shale and other debris. All anthracite shall comply with the following
characteristics:

Particle size range from 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm

Specific gravity 1.55 to 1.60
Apparent density 52 lb/cu ft
Acid solubility 5% maximum

3.4 Garnet

Garnet refers to a group of minerals including almandite, andradite, grossularite,

which are silicates of iron, aluminum and calcium. It is a high-specific gravity
filter media that is used to remove suspended solids. All material shall be
double washed and shall be free of clay, shale and other debris. All garnet shall
comply with the following characteristics:

Particle size 0.25 mm

Specific gravity 3.9 to 4.1
Apparent density 125 lb/cu ft

3.5 Gravel

Gravel is a coarse aggregate that is used to support the filter media. All material
shall be double washed and shall be free of clay, shale and other debris. The
particles shall be rounded and tend toward a spherical shape. They shall be of
sufficient strength and hardness to resist degradation during handling and
service. All gravel shall comply with the following characteristics:

Particle size 1/8 x 1/4

1/4 x 1/2
1/2 x 1
Gravel greater than the larger range size 8% by weight (maximum)
Gravel less than the smaller range size 8% by weight (maximum)
Specific gravity 2.5
Apparent density 109 lb/cu ft
Particles with fractured face 25% by weight maximum
Flat particles 2% by weight maximum
Acid solubility 17.5% maximum

3.6 Greensand

Greensand is a siliceous filter material that is used for removing iron, manganese
and hydrogen sulfide from water. All greensand shall comply with the following
characteristics:

U. S. standard series sieve size 18 x 60

Particle size 0.30 to 0.35 mm
Uniformity coefficient 1.60 maximum
Specific gravity 2.4
Apparent density 87 lb/cu ft

3.7 Sand

Sand is a siliceous filter material that removes suspended solids from water. The
particles shall be rounded and tend toward a spherical shape. They shall be of
sufficient strength and hardness to resist degradation during handling and
service. All material shall be double-washed and shall be free of clay, shale and
other debris. All sand shall comply with the following characteristics:

Particle size 0.4 to 0.6 mm

3.4 to 2.0 mm (6 to 10 mesh)
Particles greater than the larger range size 8% by weight (maximum)

3.8 Testing

As an option, samples of all granular material can be taken from each batch in
accordance with AWWA B100, AWWA B604 and ASTM D75. When this option
is selected, they shall be tested in accordance with the following procedures, as
a minimum, to ensure that all material is in compliance with this specification.
When requested, the samples shall be sent to the purchaser. Acceptance or
rejection of the shipment shall be based upon the material as received at its
destination. Additional samples may be taken and analyzed upon receipt of the
material. The quality of the media shall be determined by the following
