STUDY AREA

The area extends from Aroor

to Kayamkulam covering
Cherthala, Ambalappuzha,
Kuttanadu, Karthigappalli,
and part of Mavelikkara and
Chengannur Taluks. The
study area comprises of 58
Panchayaths,3 Muncipalities
and 10 blocks of Alappuzha
District.
LOCATION AND
LINKAGES
Well connected by a good network
of roads.
Kanyakumari Salem NH 47 passes
through the region.
The national rail route connects
the region with Chennai-Mumbai-
Delhi corridor.
Linked to MC Road by
Changanassery road
Road Connectivity to Kottayam
via Cherthala-Thanneermukkam
International Airports at Cochin
and Thiruvananthapuram are at
distances of 64 and 159 Kms
respectively
Water Inflow and River
System

The Kuttanad region receives much

of its water from four rivers mainly
Manimala, Meenachil, Pampa and
Achankovil which is also known as
Pampa _ Kuttanad river system.
Of its two main tributaries River
Manimala joins Pampa at
Nerettupuram and River
Achankovil converges with it at
Veeyapuram.

The Natural mechanism of

water environment has been
temperorily regulated by
Thanneermukkam and
Thottappilly.

HOUSE BOAT OPERATION
ROUTE DENSITY STANDARDISATION BASED ON CARRYING
CAPACITY
Calculation:
Total number of people can be allowed per Hact per day - 5 to 30 as per WTO standards
Assume a standard width of water course in Alappuzha backwaters = 50 m
For a unit hectare area (10,000 m2), total length = 10,000/50
= 200m

So, in 200 meters 20 persons can travel i.e., 2 boats assuming an occupancy rate of 10
persons/boat. 1 Km
So, in 1km, the number of boats = 2*5

50 mtr
=10 boats.

In this 10 boats, consider 8 boats as houseboats.

Speed of boat = 6 km/hr
Time for travelling 1 km = 60/6= 10 minutes.
Considering boat movement in two directions, the distance between 2 houseboats would
be 125M
So, for 2 kms = 20 minutes.
In 10 hrs = 240 boats

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The houseboat Operations are

concentrated in four regions viz.
the Pampa river system,
Kuttanad Region, Vembanad
Lake and the Karumad-
Kayamkulam stretch of the
National Waterway 3

The four regions have been

defined taking into account the
physical and regional specialities
CONSERVATION CHARACTERISTICS

The symbiotic harmony of water

and the small land
strip(between the water and
agricultural fields) and its view
makes the backwater cruise
attractive.

These 4 to 6 metres of
Land strips are called
ecotones.

The conservation of these areas

are of high priority so as to
endure the beauty of Backwater
THANNEERMUKKAM BUND AND THOTTAPPILLY
SPILLWAY
Thannermukkom

Thannermukkom regulator began to main test in the form

of proliferation of weeds, deterioration of water quality,
destruction of fisheries and shell life and increased mobility
due to stomach and skin diseases.

There are certain issue related to the opening and closing of

TMB

The unscientific operation of the TMB and other salinity

barriers to safeguard rice cultivate appears to have blocked
the connectivity of the Kayal to the sea.

Several management issues surrounding the operating and

closing of shutters

Mechanical opening of the shutters takes a week 10 days,

which creates considerable delay in either flushing out flood
water or preventing slain water intrusion.

Thottapally spill way

Siltation is the major issue in TSW.

DEPTH REQUIREMENT
The routes that come under the National Waterway 3 are already under consideration
for dredging by the concerned authority.

The depth of the water bodies under C block, A block and Ranichithira blocks is
considerably low for houseboat cruise.
