FOREWORD

The first UP-PGH Department of Surgery

Postgraduate course dates back in 1969 when Dr.
Alfredo T. Ramirez, then the executive officer of the
department initiated short intensive postgraduate
courses in surgery. Since then it became a regular
educational postgraduate activity of the
department. In the last sixteen years, the UP-PGH
postgraduate course was titled Mastery in Surgery
to highlight exceptional surgical issues as topic
content with resource speakers who are experts in
their own fields as key component of this event.
Yearly, the scientific program varies in its content
and strategy depending upon its theme. When the
Foundation for the Advancement of Surgical
Education, Inc. (FASE) was formed in 2003,
through the initiative of Dr. Jose C. Gonzales, then
the Chair of the Department of Surgery, UP-PGH
and Dr. Eduardo R. Gatchalian, the first FASE
President, it regularly helped sponsor this
educational activity to realize the departments
commitment in helping surgical practitioners
nationwide in advancing their knowledge and
expertise in the comprehensive management of the
different surgical disorders.
Mastery in Surgery 2016 theme is
Oncologic Surgery: Current Concepts and
Management. Proceeds of this event will be
donated to the Foundation for the Advancement of
Surgical Education (FASE), which will then help
fund the indigent surgical patients of the
Department of Surgery, UP-PGH; training of
surgical residents to help them achieve the highest
quality of surgical training responsive to the needs
of the Filipino people; and assistance in the
professional development programs for the
consultant staff of the department

MESSAGE FROM
THE CHANCELLOR

Greetings to the members of the Foundation for the

Advancement of Surgical Education (FASE) and
the UP PGH Department of Surgery on the holding
of the 52nd Postgraduate Course Mastery in
Surgery 2016: Oncologic Surgery: Current
Concepts and Management.
On behalf of UP Manila, I welcome the surgeons
from the different provinces and thank you for your
annual participation in this course. Your desire to
learn about recent developments on your
respective fields and specialties signifies your
commitment to optimal patient care.
The theme is highly relevant and urgent in view of
the increasing number of Filipinos afflicted with
different types of cancer that require surgery. The
comprehensive scientific program is guaranteed to
keep participants on edge with each session
tackling surgical oncology and allied topics and
focusing on the critical role of the surgical
oncologist that extends across the whole
continuum of care.
A broad understanding of cancer in its presenting
and recurring forms, as well as an awareness of
the factors that lead to tumor proliferation and
dissemination, is an integral part of the special
cognitive database of the surgical oncologist. As
part of the larger surgical community, the surgical
oncologist serves as a significant conduit of cancer
information to general surgeons and other surgical
specialists.
With such a vital role, I am optimistic that the
course will contribute greatly in your efforts to
deliver the best health care to patients.

Chancellor, University of the Philippines Manila

MESSAGE FROM
THE DEAN

The Annual Post-graduate Course of the UP-PGH

Department of Surgery through its Foundation for
the Advancement of Surgical Education is an event
eagerly anticipated by both students and experts in
the surgical field. Now on your 52nd year, I would
like to congratulate your Department and the
Foundation for the continuing efforts to provide
updated concepts and skills enhancement
programs for a more competent surgical practice
This years theme, Oncologic Surgery: Current
Concepts and Management is another timely
choice especially with the increasing prevalence of
oncologic diseases. The selection of innovative
presentations such as plenary lectures, video
presentations, panel discussions and meet the
professors, will ensure a more interesting exchange
of ideas and can definitely enhance the learning
process.
Again, on behalf of the UPCM community,
congratulations and more power to the Department
of Surgery and the FASE.

AGNES D. MEJIA, MD
Professor and Dean
UP College of Medicine

MESSAGE FROM
THE DIRECTOR

My heartfelt congratulations to the Foundation for

the Advancement of Surgical Education, Inc. and
the Department of Surgery on its annual
Postgraduate Course Mastery in Surgery 2016
entitled Oncologic Surgery: Current Concepts and
Management. This year marks the 52nd
Postgraduate course the Department has
conducted. No mean feat, but for me, it only
reiterates the Department of Surgerys position as
the top training surgical institution in the land.
Being part of the Department before, I am aware of
FASEs vision to be the funding arm of the
numerous projects and activities of surgery. It has
dedicated itself, not just to continuing surgical
education, but advancing the quality of patient care
that we deliver to our patients, as well.
Its officers and members have worked tirelessly
and selflessly to make the Foundation the stable
and reliable organization that it is now
It is the philanthropist for the PGH surgical patient,
as the source of funds for the oft expensive CT
scan or MRI, linen and drapes in the operating
room, special laboratory tests and procedures or
sometimes even just the daily antibiotic.
It is the reliable father for the surgery resident,
supporting his expenses for CME activities,
conventions, research and other training activities.
For the surgery consultant, it is a partner for
consultant development and postgraduate training.
For the department, it has become the funding
agency for many of the equipment and services
necessary to keep surgical training at the cutting
edge. And for the alumnus, it is the seed by which
the annual postgraduate course grows and reaches
out to many of you practicing away from your alma
mater.
I am inspired by how the department continues to
cope and flourish. Despite the many adversities
besetting it and the hospital, FASE remains to be
the shining beacon of hope by which each and
every one of us strive to continue to deliver the
highest quality of surgical care, training and
education in the country.
Mabuhay!
