CHIMNEY GAS EMISSION MONITORING REPORT

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Dust emission measurement were carried out on Rotary Furnace Dust Collector Exhaust
(Chimney no.3) at Ye Chiu Metal Smelting Sdn Bhd, according to the Malaysian Standard MS
1596:2003 on 5th of October 2016. The plant operating conditions were logged during the test.

2.0 PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT
This report shows the results from Isokinetic Dust Emission Measurements to
determine the prevailing dust emissions in Rotary Furnace Dust Collector Exhaust
during normal plant operation and to verify the compliance with Environmental
Quality (Clean Air) Regulations 1978.
3.0 TESTED PARAMETERS
The following parameters were tested in this monitoring:
i.
ii.

Particulate Matter (Dust, Soot, Ash, Grit and any Solid Particles)
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

iii.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

4.0 METHODOLOGY
The test is performed by taking a gas sample from the chimney isokinetically (at
prevailing velocities) whilst collecting the dust in the sample with a media filter.
During this time all relevant plant parameters are logged and the flue gas conditions
continuously monitored.

4.1 REFERENCE STANDARD

The Malaysian Standard MS 1596:2003, " Determination of Concentration and
Mass Flow of Particulate Matter in Flue Gas For Stationary Source Emissions" is
referred to and has been followed without exceptions.
-

Malaysian Standard MS 1596:2003

Determination of concentration and mass flow of particulate matter in flue
gas for stationary source emissions
The Malaysian Standard specifies a manual gravimetric method for the
measurement of the concentration and mass flow rate of particulate matter in
a moving gas stream in confined spaces such as ducts, chimneys and flues.
This method can be used to determine concentrations ranging from 0.005
g/m3 to 10 g/m3. For concentrations under 0.050 g/m3, the inaccuracy of this
method will be greater than 10%. It is primarily a reference method for the
determination of particulate matter emitted from stationary sources, it can
also be used for calibrating automatic continuous particulate. The method
should be applied as much as possible under steady state conditions of the
gas flow in the duct. It is not suitable for use on ventilation or air condition
systems, indoor atmospheres, or gases carrying droplets. The Malaysian
Standard also sets out requirements for the design features of apparatus
which can be used for the determinations if correctly used and indicates
basic requirements for the positioning of sampling facilities. If any of the
requirements of this MS are not fulfilled, the method can still be applied in
special cases but the uncertainty on particulate concentration or flow rate
may be larger.

USEPA Method 5 (Dust)

Particulate matter is withdrawn isokinetically [Sampled at the same velocity
as the stack/chimney gas velocity] from the source [Actual Orifice (HA)

USEPA Method 7E (Nitrogen Oxides)

A sample is continuously extracted from the effluent stream; a portion of the
sample stream is conveyed to an instrumental chemiluminescent analyzer for
determination of NOx concentration. Performance specifications and test
procedures are provided to ensure reliable data.

USEPA Method 6C (Sulphur Dioxide)

A gas sample is continuously extracted from a stack, and a portion of the
sample is conveyed to an instrumental analyzer for determination of SO gas
concentration using an ultraviolet (UV), nondispersive infrared 2 (NDIR), or
fluorescence analyzer. Performance specifications and test procedures are
provided to ensure reliable data.

4.2 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The Apex Instruments isokinetic source sampling system was used to carry out the
measurements. The system consists of six (6) main components:
1. Source Sampler Console, includes a dual column manometer, sample
flow control valves with orifice flow meter, dry gas meter, and
electrical controls.
2. External Vacuum Pump Unit, includes pump, hoses with quick-connect
fittings and lubricator.
3. Probe Assembly, includes a removable probe liner, removable tube
heater encapsulated in a protective probe shealth with pitot tubes/stack
temperature/orsat line quad assembly.
4. Modular Sample Case, includes hot box for filter assembly, cold box
for impinger glassware, and electrical connections.
5. Umbilical Cable, includes all electrical and pneumatic lines to connect
the Modelar Sample Case with the Source Sampler Console.
6. The Advantec GC-90 82mm glass fiber filter paper (with organic
binders, exhibiting at least 99.99% efficiency on 0.3 micron dioctyl
phthalate smoke particles) was used in the measurement.

2.3 DUST SAMPLE

The filter paper was weighted prior to the test by baking them in an oven at 120oC for half
an hour and cooled in a desiccator for two hours. The filter paper was then weighed within
5 minutes of each other. After the test the process was repeated but the drying time extended
to one hour and the cooling time to 3 hours. A reference thimble was subjected to the same
procedure and the weights were adjusted accordingly.

DETERMINING THE EXTRACTION VELOCITY (AT THE NOZZLE)

From the measured sample flow rate, the flow rate at standard conditions is calculated by
using the ideal gas law:

This flow rate is dry (after the condenser and silica gel), and therefore to calculate the
velocity at the sampling nozzle, we have to add the amount of moisture, then relate it to actual
conditions in the stack:

TOTAL VOLUME AND DUST FLOW RATE

The volume flow is calculated by multiplying the average velocity with the cross sectional
area of the chimney at the sampling plane.

Normal conditions are used to express the dust load, therefore we conveniently calculate the
