Acting by far was the best in

the
King
Lear
2008
adaptation, starring Ian M
ckellen. He is great at making
an angry Lear while he is
screaming
at
others
he
manages to mock them at the
same time showing that he is
in control of what or who he is
speaking to. This is evident
when he turns on Kent and
says this shall not be
revoked line. You know right
away that hes angered the
king and is going to pay for
his actions. And to show his
frustrated mood he carries
around a small napkin and
frequently touches his nose.
Or does a sniffle and rubes his
nose. And to add to the
actors boldness he furiously
shapes his head when he has
lost his mind. Compared to
the King Lear produced at the
New
York
Shakespeare
Festival Broadway Theatre.
James Earl Jones plays lear
with a lot of hand gesture
when in bad mood not only
that but in the first Act he
uses the sword when he has

Act 1 scene 4
King Lear has a wimp and
laps the table so that the men
know to hurry with his food.
However King Lear adds a
sentences that are not part of
King Lear's script. This
adaptation takes out lines to
the play e.g King Lear says I
will look further into it and
skips the lines which I have
rather blamed as mine own
jealous
. Although I am impressed
with the actors ability to make
King Lear be comical and in
serious tone as well.
I dont think he portrayed
Lear as a child throwing
tantrums. He was portraying
him as a person that when
ticked off shows his sword

clothing or renaissance. On
the other hand the Ian

n the 2008 King Lear the

sound effects are amazing the

organ playing at the beginning
brings the theme of death which
is what the play is about tragedy.
For some reason organ music
and villain go in hand maybe
because of the loud ominous
sound it produces. The scene
with the storm was one of my
favourite, not only do they use
rain, lighting and wet clothes but
also playing with the darkness. In
the theatre production the
effects were limited due to it
being on theatre however to
make up for that they used
instruments for the scene with
the storm. Whenever someone
important leaves the trumpets
are played (that is seen in almost
all of the adaptations) However
one cant really compare theatre
effects to movies because of the
limit in resources

Mckellen production sticked to

the
script.
The
clothing

that
of
the
renaissance era they also had
Arquebus (early types of
guns). On the other hand The
Ian Holm production lacks
costumes. Its too

In the James Earl jones

production the cloths are all
dark and grey implying that
the atmosphere is a gloomy
one they dont resemble
those of British clothing more
Persian than anything else
while
Edmunds
looks
aboriginal. No offense but last
time I recall it was Victorian
Vague and plain not only that
they are modern. The type of
clothing you find in a store.
Although it does help with the
interrogation room. Out of all
the other adaptations this one
lacks creativity. Even the
background is plain with a red
or white empty room. The one
that put the most effort in its
clothing and setting was the
king Lear production by Allen

Cooke. The background was

decorated to the finest detail.

LIGHTING
The use of light in the productions

Camera Angles:

For most of the play there is

little light they have primitive
tools such as fire and a
wooden throne - they make it
seem like it was before the
medieval era. In the Ian holm
production the director takes
advantage of lighting and
uses it to point all the light at
Gluoster in the interrogation
room. However he uses both
modern light bulbs and fire

In the Ian Mckellen version

the camera is zoomed out on
purse when Cornwall was
plucking out Glouster eyes so
that you couldn't see him
taking them out you had to

someone they point camera
