Precision Current Sensing for Torque Measurement in DC Motors

DC motors perform a variety of critical functions, from enabling electric power steering
in vehicles to helping people sleep better at night by facilitating air flow in sleep apnea
machines. Motor current sensing is a key function in determining torque and providing
closed-loop control. ADI current sense amplifiers, like the AD8207, monitor motor phase
current in the presence of PWM signals, allowing for a simple, all inclusive current
sensing solution.
The fast switching PWM signals make it very difficult for discrete component systems
to accurately measure the motor current in the shunt resistor. By providing a large input
voltage range, excellent ac common-mode rejection, best-in-class maximum offset drift
of less than 1 V/C, bidirectional operation, and high voltage transient protection, the
AD8207 allows for precise instantaneous current measurement. By monitoring current
directly on the motor phase, diagnostics information such as short to ground is readily
available, leading to a more robust motor control solution.

Offset drift typically < 500 nV/C
Ability to reject input PWM common-mode voltages from 4 V to +65 V
25 V to +75 V input survival
80 dB CMRR from dc to 100 kHz

Digitizing High Speed Control Loops in Wind Turbines to Meet Stringent

Grid Controls Using ADIs AD7656-1
Electricity networks typically suffer from sags or interruptions caused by a variety of
sources. Some wind turbine technologies respond to such events by shutting down
automatically when a voltage drop occurs on the turbine output as it connects to the grid.
This can be an entire windfarm, where both the off event and reloading of the wind farm
onto the grid can have a significant effect on grid stability.
ADIs AD7656-1 simultaneous sampling ADC is an ideal choice for UPS design to monitor
transformer signal levels in order to maintain turbine to grid connection voltage levels,
allowing continuous operation of wind turbines.

Precision Amplifiers Provide High Accuracy and Low Drift for Precision
Level Shifting and Low-Side Current Sense Applications
In efficient, integrated motor control applications, accurate low-side current sensing is
critical to overall system performance. Operational amplifiers with low noise, low offset
voltage, low input bias current, and minimal temperature drift are critical to accurately
sensing this current. Precision amplifiers can also be used to accurately level shift
the measured current, so that it can properly interface to low voltage, single supply
analog-to-digital converters.
ADI has a diverse portfolio of precision operational amplifiers, in a large variety of form
factors that suit almost any application in motor control systems. These operational
amplifiers are offered with minimum and maximum specifications over a wide temperature range (40C to +125C) that enable the system designer to confidently calculate
error budgets.
In addition to precision offset, noise, and drift specifications, the OP2177 and OP4177
operational amplifiers operate over a wide supply voltage range from 2.5 V up to 36 V.
They also offer wide input and output dynamic range, making them extremely flexible
for sensing, level shifting, and filtering applications in motor control systems.

Isolation
Integrating Isolation in the Current and Voltage Sense Loop
Current monitoring generally has to be high voltage tolerant with respect to each phase
and with respect to the controlling circuitry. Regulated safety standards from UL, CSA,
and VDE require up to 3.75 kV rms of reinforced isolation on motors.
The AD7400A and AD7401A second-order - modulators convert an analog input
signal into a high speed, 1-bit data stream with on-chip digital isolation based on
Analog Devices iCoupler technology. This enables motor control customers to design
accurate robust boards, which meet the reinforced isolation requirements. The AD7400A
and AD7401A may also be used to monitor voltage or as an isolation amp in conjunction
with a third-order active filter.

Precision Positioning of Open-Loop Motors Using ADIs DACs

Precise and stable motor control is required in a wide range of end applications from
precision tooling, robotic control, laser positioning, and CNC machining. These systems
require micro- or nanopositioning of the motor to set the armature position and to ensure
the systems accurate operation. With the AD5764R product family, precise and stable
operation is guaranteed.
The AD5764R is a multichannel 16-bit DAC with an integrated precision voltage
reference. With an accuracy of 1 LSB linearity and best-in-class temperature and time
drift specification, this device has the performance required in high end open-loop
systems. Also included on chip are user-programmable system calibration features,
allowing quick and easy calibration in the end application.
Features
16-bit resolution and accuracy
Nominal output span of 10 V
Integrated precision reference
System calibration allowing user programmable gain and offset

High Performance Voltage References Provide Highest Accuracy

and Lowest Drift
Precision data converters with 14-bit to 24-bit resolution perform best with an external
voltage reference. External voltage references provide the highest initial accuracy and
the lowest drift due to temperature changes and over time (aging).
Ratiometric applications are not as demanding on the reference, so the internal
reference found in an ADC or DAC are more than adequate. But when ultrahigh
resolution and dc precision is needed, low frequency (1/f) noise is also critical for
consistent and accurate measurements.
Also, when multiple ADCs and DACs need to operate from the same voltage, external
voltage references are best, with their higher drive capability, in addition to their source
and sinking capability.
The table below lists high performance voltage references over a range of price and
performance for the most demanding requirements in measurement and control.

Demo and Reference Designs

Analog Devices has developed a set of demonstration platforms with
full signal chain technology alignment that are bound together with high
level software tools like the Mathworks MATLAB or Analog Devices own
development tools, such as the VisualDSP++ development and debug
environment. This enables a complete understanding about how motor
control systems work.
The demonstration platforms embrace the different technologies that have
been shown previously in this brochure and align critical needs of a typical
motor control system.

Circuits from the Lab by Analog Devices is a new design assistance resource that
provides engineers with tested circuit solutions for many common applications.
Circuits from the Lab pairs at least two complementary components, such as an
ADC and amplifier, to present a circuit optimized for a targeted application.
Each circuit has been built and tested in the lab and can be easily integrated into
designs, resulting in reduced design risk and faster time to market.
Circuit note documentation accompanies each Circuits from the Lab and describes the circuit function,
benefits, and implementation in detail, with common variations noted.
