Background Information:
Modeling Elements and Compounds
In this activity, you and your group will use building blocks to model compounds. You should first observe carbon and
sodium chloride under a microscope and construct drawings of what you observe. You will then use the snap-together
building blocks provided to explore the concepts of elements, atoms, and compounds.
Objective(s):
In this investigation, you will use building blocks to demonstrate how a wide variety of different compounds can be created by
combining different elements.
Materials List:
Building blocks, snap-together plastic
Microscope
Microscope slides, 2
Carbon- granular
Sodium chloride
Petri dish, 2
Spoon, small measuring
Science journal or notebook

Key Components
Key Components
Key Components
1. How could you increase the variety of types of matter that are modeled?
2. How many different compounds can you make using the elements you were given?
3. How is the number of compounds you formed using the model different than the number found in nature?
