BACKGROUNDRENDERING
Lumionalwaysrendersmoviesandimagesequencesinthebackground(whichcorrespondtothe
MP4andImagestabsinMoviemode),sothatyoucancheckyouremailsetcwhileitisrendering.
BackgroundrenderingisnotsupportedwhenrenderingastillimageviaPhotomodeortheSingle
tabinMoviemode.
IMPORTANT:Forthebackgroundrenderingprocesstoworkwhenyourendervideosorimage
sequences,youshouldnotswitchtoanotherprogramuntilthefirstimageisdonerendering.Avoid
moving/resizing/minimizingtheLumionwindowwhileitisrendering,anddonotclickontheShow
DesktopbuttoninthelowerrightcornerofWindows.ThiswillresettheexposureinLumionwhich
meansthatthevideohastoberenderedfromscratchagain.

IMPORTING&UPDATINGMODELS
EditMaterials>(CTRL)+ReloadModelandreapplymaterials(newfile)button:Ifthename
orlocationofanexportedobjectfile(DAE,FBXetc)haschanged,thisbuttonallowsyouto
manuallyselectthelocation/nameofthefile:

EditMaterials>(ALT)+ReloadModelbutton:Ifyouimportamodelthatusesover100mbof
texturememory,Lumionwillcapthemaximumtextureresolutionat2048x2048pixels.However,
youcanbypassthislimitbypressingALTwhileyouclickontheReloadmodelbutton.Ifyouapplya
StandardorLightmapmaterialtoyourimportedmodel,anytextureyouloadwillbeloadedat
whateverresolutionyourgraphicscardiscapableofdisplaying(uptoamaximumof16384x16384
pixels).

InLightProperties>Optimizefor,choosewhatismostimportantforeachlight:

Accuracy:Theshadowsareupdatedeveryframe(Slow!).Everytimeyouaddalightwith
Accuracyturnedon,theentirescenehastoberenderedoncemore.Add10lightsandthe
scenehastoberendered10timesmoreeveryframe.Eachlightusesa1024x1024pixel
shadowtexture.
Speed:Theshadowfromthelightusesastatic512x512pixeltexturewhichisnotupdated
(Fast,moderatememoryusage)
Memory:Theshadowfromthelightusesastatic128x128pixeltexturewhichisnotupdated
(Fast,verylowmemoryusage)

Toreducerendertimes,werecommendthatdistantlights(e.g.streetlights)inyoursceneuse
eithertheMemoryortheSpeedoption,sothattheshadowsarenotupdatedeveryframe.Ifyour
graphicscardhasenoughmemory,thebestoptionisSpeed.
YouwouldonlyeveruseAccuracyforyourlightsifsomethingthatcastsshadowsismovingnear
thelight(acardrivingpastastreetlightforexample).Orifthelightitselfmoves/rotates(stage
lightingforconcertsforexample).Orifyouneedhighresolutionshadowsincertainareas(typically
closeupsofinteriors).

SHADOWARTIFACTS(BANDING,FLICKERING,LIGHTLEAKAGE)
ShadowsinLumionareaddedontopofallsurfaceswithanoffset.Thereasonanoffsetisneeded
isthattheshadowswillotherwiseflicker(ordisplaybandingartifacts)whentheshadowsarevery
closetosurface.Iftheoffsetissettoohigh,furniture(asanexample)willappeartohoverabove
thefloor.Inrealitythefurnitureisnothoveringofcourse,buttheoffsetshadowsgivetheillusion
ofit.

It'sdifficulttogettheoffsetrightastheoptimaloffsetvariesfromscenetoscene,dependingon
thesunpositionandthecameraposition.Forthatreason,youhavetoaddtheShadoweffectto

TheShadowcorrectionslidercontrolstheoffsetdirectlywhereastheShadowSlopesliderisusedto
preventlightleakagethroughmodels.

UPDATESUN,SKY,LIGHTING,CLOUDSANDREFLECTIONS
(U):IfyoupresstheUkey,thesun,sky,lighting,cloudsand360degreereflectiontexturewillbe
updated.ThisisoftennecessaryifyouswitchbetweenBuild/Movie/Photomodeandthesunisin
differentpositions.IfyoukeeptheUkeypressedinPhoto/Moviemode,theCloudeffectwillbe
renderedin(almost)finalrenderquality.Thisisusefulifyouwanttoseewhatthecloudswilllook
likewhileadjustingthecloudsliders.BearinmindthattheVolumeCloudseffecthastoberendered
in3starqualitytoseewhatthesecloudswilllooklikeinfinalrenderquality.

GLOBALILLUMINATION
Youmustrenderimages/videoswiththeGlobalIlluminationeffectin3starquality.Ifyourenderit
in1or2starquality,thelightingwillappeartoflickerandyouwillonlyseeapixelatedpreviewof
theglobalilluminationlightingonyourrenderings.

VOLUMECLOUDS
Youmustrenderimages/videoswiththeVolumeCloudseffectin3starquality.Ifyourenderitin1
or2starquality,youwillonlyseeapixelatedpreviewonyourrenderings,andthecloudswill
appeartomoveandchangeshapeasthecameramoves.

REFLECTIONSINLUMION
Thereare2typesofreflectionsinLumion:
1)Planarreflections(Neweffect>World>Reflection):
ThisMovieeffectallowsyoutospecifyupto10reflectionplanesinyourscene.Anymodelsurface
whichiscoplanarwithaspecifiedreflectionplaneinyourscenewillhaveaccuratereflections.This
isidealformirrors,marblefloorsetc.TheeffectincludesaThresholdsliderwhichallowsyouto
adjustthedistanceatwhichnearlycoplanarsurfaceswillbeincludedinthereflectionplane.The
tradeoffisaccuracybutit'susuallynotnoticeable.Pleasenotethatifyouhavesomenearlyco
planarsurfacesthatyouwanttoassignasinglereflectionplaneto,youneedtoassigntheplaneto
thesurfacewhichisclosesttothecamerasotospeak.
Pleasenotethatthefollowingobjectsandmaterialsarenotreflectedduetotechnicallimitations:
Ocean.
NativeLumionwaterplanes.
Waterfall,WaterandGlassmaterials.
Specialeffects:Fountains,Smoke,FireandFog.
Grass.
Everytimeyouadd1reflectionplane,Lumionhastomirrorallmodels&rendertheentirescene
oncemore.Forthatreason,trytouseasfewreflectionplanesaspossible:

2)Projectedreflections:
ProjectedreflectionsinLumionrelyonasingle360degreepanoramicreflectiontexturewhichis
projectedontoanyreflectivematerialsthatarenotusingplanarreflections.Theprojectedreflection
methodisonlyanapproximationandwillneverprovideasrealisticreflectionsastheplanar
reflectioneffectabove.InLumion4.x,addtheLights>Utilities>Reflectioncontrolobjectto
yourscenetospecifythepositionwherethe360degreepanoramicreflectiontextureshouldbe
renderedat.

Ifyoudonotaddthisobjecttoyoursceneitwillbeplacedafewhundredmetersabovetheterrain.
Ifyouarerenderinginteriors,thebestpositionfortheReflectionControlobjectisoftennearthe
cameraposition.BearinmindthatyoucanalsoanimatethisobjectwiththeMove/AdvancedMove
effectsintheMoviesection.

HOWTOPREVENTSURFACESFROMFLICKERING/DISAPPEARING
Ifyounoticethatsurfacesflickerordisappearwhenmovingthecamera,addaStandardmaterial
tothesurfacethatyouwanttobeontop.ThenadjusttheDepthOffsetsliderinthatmaterialbut
avoidextremeDepthOffsetvaluesyoushouldonlyadjustitalittlebit,untiltheflickeringstops

WHATDOESTHE'LIMITALLTEXTURESIZES'OPTIONDO?
'Limitalltexturesizes'on:Texturesthatarebiggerthanorequalto1024x1024pixelsare
automaticallyreducedto512x512pixelsinallmodes.Thisappliestobuiltinmaterialsaswellas
texturesusedbyallmodels(stockandimportedmodels).Thereisnooverridefunction.
'Limitalltexturesizes'off:Ifyouimportamodelthatusesover100mboftexturememory,
Lumionwillcapthemaximumtextureresolutionat2048x2048pixels.However,youcanbypassthis
limitbypressingCTRLwhileyouclickontheReloadmodelbutton.IfyouapplyaStandardor
Lightmapmaterialtoyourimportedmodel,anytextureyouloadwillbeloadedatwhatever
resolutionyourgraphicscardiscapableofdisplaying(uptoamaximumof16384x16384pixels).

Itispossibletoimportmove/rotate/scaleanimationsfromsome3rdpartymodelling3D
applications,e.g.3DSMaxandMaya.Theframeratehastobesetto25framespersecondandthe
preferredexportformatisFBXfile.Colladaformat(DAE)alsoworksbuttheinterpolationbetween
keyframeswillbelinear.
Itisnotpossibletoimportvertexanimations,morphanimationsorboneanimationsinLumion.
