So, its the last update of the year from

the crew at ScotsGay Towers, and we have
lots of exciting things coming up to report
over the next month! As always there is a
plethora of entertainment whatever your
taste and I am particularly impressed with
how many bars have late licences and/or are
open on Xmas day! I think we hit a record
high this year. So get your hands on some
of this hot action!
Planet just keeps getting better every
time I go in from the dcor, to the
entertainment, to the drinks offers! Last
months Planet Ink featuring awesome
tattooists from Old Town Tattoo was a
massive success, with the artists having the
opportunity to showcase their talents, offer
discounts and familiarise themselves to
customers. Its high time the scene
embraced and celebrated the alternative
community that is so prevalent in Edinburgh.
And it also gave strangers to body art the
chance to explore this for themselves in
an atmosphere they were comfortable
with. So if you do fancy something a wee
bit different to do with your Xmas
spends, check out Old Town Tattoos
website/facebook page!
Also at Planet, their Thu night
quizzes have been a huge hit. They
consist of two question rounds, a music
round and a face round. Followed by a
Deal or No Deal card challenge at the
end, just to keep you on your toes! And
unlike some of the other scene quizzes
which are more high brow in nature, this is a
quiz that even the most unintellectual of you
can manage! You know who you are! Get in
there for some huge cash winnings, which
have ranged from 50 to 150. Planets
festive deets: 1pm-3am opening; Xmas Eve
open as usual; Xmas Day 8pm-3am;
Boxing Day 4pm-3am; New Years Day
4pm-3am with comedy duo Daz Glaz and
Cilla Slack entertaining you with charity
bingo, deal or no deal and other such
tomfoolery! On Hogmanay, Planet will be
dropping balloons full of cash, drinks
vouchers, club passes, tattoo vouchers and
more! And watch out for the start of their
table service and snacks menu!
And quite possibly the most exciting
news on the scene THIS YEAR which I think
may have made me squee more than a little
was the introduction of Planets awesome
Smirnoff Mojito Cocktail ON DRAUGHT!!!!!!
Last month I reported that cheap vodka was
no more in Planet; theyre Smirnoff all the
way! And now they have Mojito Cocktails on
draught its a thing of true beauty. Really
fresh tasting beautiful mojitos, we all know
how you just love a cocktail or two out
there! Sample these at the intro price of just
3.95 which is awesome as these are so
strong theyll knock your socks off!!
Up at Frenchies, their Lady Gaga party
went down a storm last month as
everything Lady Gaga does! And to
accompany the range of entertainment, they
have started their Winter Sale with great
promos available Sun-Thu. They are open on
Xmas Day from 5pm-3am. And carrying on
the themed parties, Frenchies have got an
extravaganza planned for Hogmanay an

Frenchies, its tucked in behind the back of
Princes Street, at the very end of Rose Street
(Waverley end). Its a perfect little oasis to
relax in after a hectic day Xmas shopping!
Experience the warmth from their Winter
Warmers (Hot Toddy, Hot Port, Mulled Wine
and Mulled Cider). Yum!
Priscillas features a one-off Xmas
spectacular from glam duo Miss Scarlet
Diamonte & Saggy Sonia on Sat 17th Dec.
Scarlet Diamonte is an Edinburgh scene fav,
and for those not in the know, Saggy Sonia
is reported to be her younger and better
looking sister! Why dont you be the judge
of that claim as the duo give you a night of
remade Xmas classics, kicking off from 9pm
with Lala Hotpants on the decks. The crew
at Priscillas guarantee this is the best drag
show in town! Sun 18th Dec brings the
GRAND FINAL of The Voice! Edinburghs
Got Talent winner Gavin Blackie will be
performing his brand new single live on the
night, and will also be on the judging panel
as the final 4 perform to impress and be
crowned The Voice 2011! Exciting stuff!
On Sat 24th Dec, JLM will be hosting Festive
Karaoke 7-11pm , then Boozy Soozy takes
over to keep you partying hard to the early
hours of Xmas morning! On Xmas Day the
hard working crew batten down the hatches,
re-opening again on Boxing Day as normal.
Sat 31st Dec, Jamie Lee Morley and Boozy
Soozy will be entertaining party lovers all
night long, with some secret plans for yall check out their website/Facebook page for
more details!! Its gonna be a smash and
details kept under wraps to keep you in
suspense till the last minute! You will just
have to be there to really be in with the fun!
Every Sat is karaoke from 7-10pm, so get
your vocal cords prepared with some fine
Priscillas buckets, vases and fish bowls of
cocktails. Oh and Priscillas have a 3am
licence every night from 18th Dec-3rd Jan
and with their 5am opening, that is 22 hours
of drinking fun! Hardcore!
The Street are launching a new Sunday
session which has already commenced.
Some of the entertainment going on there
includes Trendy Wendy and Morgan
spinning the decks and seeing the bells in,
and then Wendy will be hitting Elbow and
Mumbo Jumbo at the Bongo until 5am.
For all you ladies out there, Saturday
Night Beaver are having their Xmas party on
Sat 17th Dec at The Speakeasy with
special guest Santa Claudia and her special
shelfs! A little Xmas treat for all you
lovely ladies looking for love, lust or a good
hard dance sesh. From 11pm!
And for the guys, Jan will see the
BearScots having their post-festive bash
with the Bears in the Basement, at the New
Town Bar on Sat 14th Jan. They will be
getting right into prep too for the 10th
BearScotFest in Edinburgh which has been
announced as 5th -7th Oct 2012.

At the Newtown Bar, the main event

leading up to Xmas is that celebrity fag hag
and Edinburgh scene celebrity fav Michelle
McManus will be performing LIVE on the
Newtown stage on Fri 23rd Dec! Its gonna
be huge. And every Fri, Ruby Reynolds is on
stage with live performance and song
requests from 9pm onwards bringing a bit of
festive cheer to proceedings. And if youre
looking for something different and gleeful
to do of a Sun, check out Sunday Round The
Piano with free afternoon tea (sandwiches
and home baking)! The Newtowns
basement bar also opened again this week,
so look out for lots of new events coming
up.
A small message from the crew at the NTB:
On behalf of myself and the staff, we want
to wish our fellow gay bars a very merry
(and busy) Xmas! Heres to a healthy and
happy New Year. Also thanks to everyone
who has come to the bar over the past year!
Roll on 2012 for lots of new events and a lot
more Fundraising fun! Here here!
Heres a wee note of the NTBs opening
times: Wed 21st Dec Mon 2nd Jan Noon3am. Fri 23rd, Fri 30th and Sat 31st 4am

The Caledonian Thebans have braved
all for a special calendar, which was
launched for sale at a party at the Newtown
Bar recently!
And for the late night entertainment, as
always CC Blooms are pulling it all out of the
bag! Their Xmas and New Year Festival
kicks off with the first 5am close at Sunday
Skool on Sun 18th Dec. DJ Shelle La Belle
has built this 90s old skool dance night up
to become the ONLY place to be on a Sun
night! And with an extra 2 hours of old skool
dance music, free entry and bar promos, this
is sure to be one hell of a way to kick off the
festive period! 11pm-5am. The crew are of
course open on Xmas Day, with Calvertos
Xmas Day Cracker on 25th Dec. DJ Calverto
celebrates the big day with a mix of festive
tunes and chart cheese. Perfect for dancing
off that turkey! Expect all sorts of festive fun

And on Hogmanay, the now famous 1000
Drop Party will be happening on the bells!!
The annual CCs 1000 drop will happen at
Midnight on the toll of Big Ben, when they
will be dropping balloons on the crowd
containing 1000 in cold hard cash. Last
year, many of you walked away with enough
cash to party the night away, get your taxi
home and have change left! This time it
could be you!! DJ Shazza is upstairs with
chart; DJ Blondie is downstairs with hard
dance mixes. Get there early! Its free entry
so expect to queue if you turn up late. DJs

Edinburghs a less interesting place with the unexpected death of Annie

Garven on 1st Dec. That day, Annie was due to be singing with her friends in
Loud and Proud Choir at the World AIDS Day Service at St Johns, Princes
Street. Support for people with HIV and AIDS was only one of the causes that
Annie supported. She was a passionate environmentalist and a keen bird
watcher in and around Edinburgh and in Galloway, where Annie and her family
and friends enjoyed many happy days in their seaside cottage which had been in the family for years.
She was born in Glasgow at a time when air quality meant that as a baby,
being left out on the balcony for some fresh air required her to be swabbed
down to remove smuts on her face and clothes! Via some time down south
she spent a few years on Mull. Annie drove the fish and chip van and swam
across Tobermory Harbour in aid of charity. She subsequently came to
Edinburgh in the late 80s, living in Trinity, where she enjoyed fine views of the
city skyline and a bountiful garden.
A genealogist by profession, Annie had a razor-sharp intellect (and sense
of humour too), loved theatre and was developing a great interest in opera. Loud and Proud Choir
became, over the last six years, another family for Annie, where she famously was the sole woman in
the Tenor section and was loved by the gay men who surrounded her. The Choir dedicated a rendition
of her favourite carol to Annie at their Festive Concert and at her recent funeral turned out en masse,
with nearly 50 singing.
Anne will be remembered in Broughton Street and the Regent, where she could be opinionated and
grumpy, but on many more days, be a faithful and interested, interesting and loyal friend. Our
condolences to Annies mother Morag, sister Jane and family and friends many, various and missing
her.

what next for Glasgow? Will Hurricane
Bawbag be followed by yet more ridiculous
weather conditions? Cyclone Fannybaws
perhaps? Well whatever happens it wont be
me writing about it in 2012 as this is to be
my final review for ScotsGay magazine. And
as such I will be writing not just about the
last month, but also casting an eye over the
whole year a year which has seen multiple
dramatic changes for Glasgows gay
community.
Revolver and Scene both changed their
names to Underground and Milk
respectively. Bennets nightclub went into
receivership only to be dramatically rescued
and taken over by new management. The
Polo Lounge saw four new managers in as
many months and reinvented their Trophy
Room as Club X.
The Court Bar

The changes this year, when you look at
them as a whole, have changed the
landscape of our commercial gay scene
quite considerably. It has long been a belief
of mine that for any community to flourish
there needs be variety. Not just variation in
terms of places
to go, but also of
music to listen
to, entertainment
to watch, and
people to meet.
Unfortunately the
less variety
which exists, the
less people seem
to be interested
in socialising on
their gay scene. And arguably the less
people who go out and connect on the
scene, the less of a community exists.
But thats not to say there arent some
big gay things to enjoy in our city. Lets take
a look at, say QueerCore. A clubnight run by
gay gals with a penchant for rock and
dubstep QueerCore may have bounced from
venue to venue this year but these
compromises
seem to have
been made to
preserve the
integrity of the
club, one which
makes a different
musical
statement from
the rest of the
scene. Gays my

REDEFINING MARRIAGE
This same-sex marriage thing has
been very useful. The mask has slipped
for even more Scots who are waking up
to the religionists' game plan. The
debate started with the media crowing
over a bunch of Catholic militants
invited to meet First Minister, Alex
Salmond (so many frocks they ran out
of seats!) pressing on him to make sure
there was a free speech clause in any
forthcoming legislation on
sectarianism. As soon as they got
home, the Friends of The Scottish
Catholic Observer Facebook page
booted out and blocked anyone critical
of their institution. As soon as NOT
Friends of The Scottish Catholic
Observer was born on Facebook we
began documenting the institutions
dastardly deeds while the Scottish
Catholic Media Office concentrated on
diverting attention away from them in
the media to concentrate on its more
homophobic ambitions. There were
stories of the annual 6 billion the
Catholic Church was draining out of the
Italian exchequer; the claim Catholic
schools were promoting tolerance,
respect and diversity while teaching
gay kids they were 'intrinsically
disordered'; the theatre in Paris that
had to be protected by riot police from
Catholics wanting to censor a
blasphemous play; the comfort
abusing priests found in confessionals;
the banning of the mention of condoms
on Italian TV on World AIDS Day; the
cover-up of more abuse in Ontario,
Canada; protection of abusing priests in
Victoria, Australia; the success of
Vatican officials escaping questioning
in Portland, Oregan; the Spanish courts
ruling that the Opus Dei sect should
conform to data protection laws and
delete ex-members data; the dropping
of seat-belt charges against the Pope
on his jolly in Germany; the head of the
Catholic Church in Irelands legal
settlement over his role in
administering an oath of secrecy to a
teenage victim of clerical sexual abuse;
the staggering 52 cases of abuse
involving 14 priests uncovered in
Northern Ireland and the Most
Reverend Dr Philip Boyce Catholic Lord
Bishop of Raphoes statement that
listening to child sex abuse victims
wouldnt serve any worthwhile purpose.
And so it went on, ad nauseam.
On the Facebook page NOT Friends
of The Scottish Catholic Observer we've
been able to reveal what has been
hidden. Not because it's not there as
the Catholic Church would have you
believe, but because there is a wilful
campaign by religionists to conceal,
deceive and apologise for such
shocking crimes and abuses against
humanity, from the collecting of huge
swathes of taxpayer-funded privileges
to institutional violence. And as long as
well-funded Christian organisations
continue to brainwash children at home
and in schools and place interns in our

government and our media to promote

their nasty agendas, we will never free
ourselves of them.
As each day passed in this nasty
consultation, I was left wondering
what stunt religionists were going to
pull next. They were clearly on a roll.
The Scottish media licked the press
releases dribbling out of the Scottish
Catholic Media Office like a melting
Cornetto in Cairo. Just when we
thought wed binned Section 28 they
were back. Over 10,000 spent on
press adverts in the Scottish press.
Same old faces. Same old tricks. The
same mobile advertising van circled the
Parliament, only instead of a picture of
Wendy Alexander plugging her ears
with her fingers, it was Scotland for
Marriage and a bunch of fundies with a
sound system, plugging their ears to all
the changes in Scotland since we pulled
Brian Souters Keep the Clause
megabus off the road to ensure no-one
could stop giving gay kids appropriate
sex information in schools over ten
years ago.
Showing some political muscle in
Scotland is all about names. As Edina
Monsoon would say: Names, sweedie.
Names And what a bunch of
tambourine rattlers they all were too!
Christian Action Research and
Education (CARE) which funds interns
to infiltrate the Scottish Parliament and
media with their diabolical Christian
teaching; the Christian Institute which
secures tax relief by registering as a
charity and using it, with the aid of
teams of Christian legal advisers, to
launch one homophobic campaign after
another. This is an organisation so foul
it has been labelled cruel and vicious
by peers in the House of Lords. Then
the Catholic Bishops Conference of
Scotland which receives instructions
from the Vatican; Destiny Churches
Scotland a collection of evangelicals
who also benefit from taxpayer-funded
grants; the Evangelical Alliance, a wellfunded organisation promoting its
extreme brand of Christianity and the
Family Education Trust, a grandsounding name that makes it its
business to feed the press with proreligious soundbites.
Ministering to spiritual needs? Oh,
dahling, thats so yesterday!
The old guard were soon
organising their mob outside
Parliament at Holyrood. Quickly, quietly,
notices went out to Baptist churches,
fundamentalists and Catholic Churches.
They mustve known that any major
announcements that militants running
the Catholic Church were
demonstrating on the streets of
Scotland could evoke a huge backlash
after years of systematic child abuse
and cover-ups.
Their icy faces were grimly fixed in
the cold November wind that flapped
the pages of their scripts as they
gathered under the Scotland for

Marriage banner (not to be confused

with the United Christian Witness and
Protest Against Same-sex Marriage
who gathered there a few weeks later)
to spill their bile. Baying for moral order
they took turns mounting the hastily
erected pavement pulpit. First up,
Gordon Wilson, former leader of the
SNP. He spoke touchingly of the
distress the arrogant gay rights lobby
would cause to straight people if we
tainted marriage. It would cause the
SNP to lose the referendum on
independence. Then Cardinal Keith
OBrien, having signed a life-size
billboard held up by the blank,
brainwashed, youngest faces they could
squeeze into their Scotland for Marriage
t-shirts, blamed us for being intolerant
and subverting everyone elses human
rights. Then, with the repeal of Section
28 so fresh in her mind, the
homophobic Mrs Ann Allen, former
convener of the Victorian-sounding
Board of Social Responsibility went up
in her pink twin-set top to sneer at
political correctness and blame us for
opening the door to polygamy. Do we
want that in modern Scotland?
NAAAWWWW! The mob cried, baying
for a return to theocracy and all the
moral certainties it brought them. So
excited by her own zeal, and with one
foot still harking back to Keep the
Clause she made the mistake of calling
OBrien, Cardinal Winning. (Certainly
no friend of Dorothy, that silly old
bugger was buried in a pair of red
shoes back in 2001 with Section 28)!
Scotland had moved on and nobody
had told poor Mrs Allen. She has been
clearly frustrated that her particular
cult, the Church of Scotland, has been
wringing their liver-spotted hands over
the subject of gays for too long. Finally
they got round to plugging the dyke
with an order that no gays could be
ordained unless theyd come out
before May 2009. (I mean, you couldnt
fucking make this up, could you?) Sex
is Mrs Allens nightmare. Shes famous
for once suggesting that Girl Guides
need a moral map; not how to use a
condom and believed children needed
to be protected from a sex-mad
society suggesting any attempt to deal
with the matter in comic books was

very unhealthy. I need to see a Kirk

minister and ask what motivates the
devil within me to want to shave her
head and parade her round Asda.
The press squealed that the samesex marriage debate was causing a
schism within the Church of Scotland.
(Oh, good, bring it on!) But before I got
carried away, I was forced to quietly
reflect on the fact that most Churches,
including the Kirk, were formed as a
result of schisms. (Damn and blast!)
The Scottish media went into
raptures over the next one. Another
reactionary, right-wing, retrenched Kirk
committee as bad as the Board of
Social Responsibility, called the Legal
Questions Committee, normally
involved in compiling statistics and
supervising the care of dusty Church
records, decided to get up on its
soapbox to announce the Kirk was
against same-sex marriages. (Mrs Allen
mustve been dancing up the aisle
wearing some of the chrysanths behind
her ears that Mrs McEwan normally
brings to fill the vase on the altar). To
cover its arse, though, it added that it
was on a journey just in case in
years to come they might want to
apologise for their reactionary stance
and recruit some youngsters to replace
the retrenched, right-wing, old Biblebashing buggers theyd just buried.
Religionists werent going to
mention it. But finally it came out. (You
can thank the Humanists for that). The
vast majority of marriages conducted
last year were secular. That is to say:
People who didnt want any religion in
it. This applies to most people in
Scotland today. The Catholic Church
Monsoon:
only conducted 6.2% of marriages last Edina
Names, sweedie. Names
year yet it wants to demand that no
other Church must conduct same-sex
marriage even if they want to. Perhaps
this was why it was so difficult to get
anyone to write in to the Parly let
alone fill in a confusing form in
defence of any kind of marriage. Its not
just marriage weve left behind. Weve
thankfully left the Church.
If religionists were blocking gay
human rights, the rest of you better
buck up because theyll be coming for
you next! A report in the Daily Record
detailed how the Wee Frees in
Stornoway, in full swing-tying tradition,
had succeeded in having their New
Years festival celebration finished at
11pm so it wouldnt interfere with the
Sabbath. (Which is supposed to be on a
Saturday, but lets not split hairs).
Then it was the Scottish
Episcopalians turn to click their
polished boots. The Scottish branch of
the Anglican Communion had grown a
reputation of being less retrenched and
more liberal under Richard Holloway,
the former bishop of Edinburgh and
Episcopalian Primus. He gasped:
Personally, I am disappointed. I
thought they would have been braver.
Well, sweetheart, now you know!

Spirituality as you know it is certainly

not invested in these hopeless Godforsaken organisations any longer.
Theyve turned into a bitter and twisted
old codger, tapping the page of a story
in the Scottish Daily Mail, reminding
you the countrys gone to the dogs, lost
its moral backbone and is about to be
swept away if we let two people who
love each other marry. Never mind the
fact that everyone else just uses the
Church as a photo-opportunity before a
good-old knees-up on the sticky floors
of a function room at The Wheatsheaf.
Accusing us of intolerance is
laughable. It is intolerance when you
are determined to withhold the rights
you enjoy from others. Marriage
doesnt belong to religionists. It never
has done and never will do. The
patriarchal institution was created by
men with their interests first and
foremost. And neither is the right to
procreate invested in heterosexuals.
There are plenty of people who define
themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transexual or intersexed who have
children. Religionists dont have any
evidence that same-sex marriage is
harmful to children or anyone else. It
wont make any difference to their
marriage. They are simply denying it to

us on the basis that

it might be harmful.
They insist marriage
can only be between
a man and a woman.
Because the Bible
tells me so, their
daft flocks sing. But
its like singing hymn
number 453 and
omitting versus 3
and 4. The Bible also
celebrates the
marriage of one man
and 700 women with
an additional 300
concubines for King
Solomon. Or
between the men of
Benjamin and the
forcibly kidnapped
dancing girls of
Shiloh. Or between
Moses soldiers and
the war booty of
Midianite virgins. Or
a man and girl he
bought. Or between
Abraham and his
half-sister. Or a man
and his aunt (Moses
parents). This is not
about Gods law at
all. It is about an
emerging group of
extremists seeking a
moral certainty in a
progressively
challenging and
changing world.
They are coming out
of the closet and, my
goodness, their siren voices are
becoming ever-more shrill. On BBC
Scotlands Call Kaye, Rev James Gracie,
of the Free Church of Scotland
(Continuing) unashamedly linked gays
with pdophiles and thieves.
Meanwhile, without any evidence to
support his findings, The Scotsmans
daily homophobic letter writer,
schoolteacher Richard Lucas re-hashed
the suggestion that polygamy follows
same-sex marriage. (Of all the dozens
of countries that allow polygamy, only
South Africa went on to introduce
same-sex marriage).
I'm all for free speech. So I'm sure
then, Mr Lucas won't mind me saying
that the homophobia we are witnessing
amongst militant religionists has its
source in their own sexual dysphoria.
Studies in the US have drawn a direct
link between homophobia and
homosexuality, and the Church - a boys
club with its carte blanche to be critical
of homosexuality with impunity provides these people with the perfect
cover to denounce what they are most
fearful of.
How many more religionists have
to be outed or caught with their pants
down sucking a rent boys cock before
this fact is laid bare?

Edinburgh
Mature guy looking for fun with
guy(s) aged 16-26 - probably
at my place in Central Edinburgh. Nothing complicated:
love not required although mutual respect is a must. One off
is good, so is longer term fuck
buddy. Im mostly active but
can be versatile if thats what
really works for you. Safer fun
only - no barebacking. And a
kiss or cuddle can be just as
good as (or better than) anything else - so there are a lot of
options. What have you got to
lose by replying and seeing if
our needs/desires are compatible? Other than your virginity
which is soon gone with this
poof! Box SG12108.

Young, Smooth Guy
Small (56), fat (15st), old

beard, very hairy body, looking
for fun and friendship with
young (16-22) guy. You: No

good or clever), preferably a

heads - why do you want to be
bald at your age?), smooth
chest (shaved is good, naturally smooth is better), no facial hair, not anorexic (I like a
bit of plump - although slim is
OK). Im probably far too picky
- but then I bet most suitable
