ES 13 Problem Set 1

1. A thrust bearing as shown in the figure supports a load P = 7500 lb. The allowable
stress is 24 ksi in tension, 18 ksi for shear between the collar and shaft, and 6 ksi for
bearing between the collar and the support. Determine the minimum required values for
t, d and D considering factor of safety equal to 2.0.
[Ans: d=0.892 in., t=0.30 in., D = 2.0 in]

2. For the TRUSS shown, calculate the stresses in members DF, CE

2
and BD. The cross-sectional area of each member is 500mm .
Indicate if in tension (T) or compression (C).
[Ans: DF = 450 MPa (C), BD = 192.3 MPa (C), CE = 270 MPa (T)]

3. Two hydraulic cylinders are used to control the position of the robotic
arm ABC. Knowing that the control rods at A and D are 25mm in
diameter and happen to be parallel as shown, determine the normal
stress at (a) AE and (b) DG. Assuming double shear condition,
determine the required pin diameter at F if the allowable shear stress is
45 MPa.
[Ans: AE = 8.15 MPa (T), DG = 3.06 MPa (C), d=6.71 mm]

4. The hydraulic cylinder CF, which partially controls the position of rod DE, has been
locked in the position shown. Member BD is 5/8 in thick and is connected to a vertical
rod by a 3/8 in diameter bolt. Determine (a) the average shearing stress in the bolt
and (b) the bearing stress at C in member BD.
[Ans: AE = 10839.8 psi, b = 5108.13 psi]

0.20 m
5. A thin walled, T-shaped gas pipe is fabricated from plates having a tensile
strength of 600 MPa as shown. Top and bottom plates are 20 mm thick, while plates
on left and right sides are 10 mm thick. (a) Determine the allowable stress in the
pipe in MPa. (b) What is the safe pressure (in KPa) inside the pipe considering
longitudinal stress and (c) tangential stress? Use factor of safety equal to 2.0,
Youngs modulus equal to 200,000 MPa and poissons ratio eqal to 0.33.
[Ans: allowable = 300 MPa, Psafe for long.stress = 46500 kPa, Psafe for circ. stress = 12000 kPa]

0.50 m

0.20 m
6. The structural members support the 3-kN load which may be
applied at any angle from essentially -90 to 90 . The pin at A
must be designed to support the maximum force transmitted to
it. (a) solve for angle that gives maximum reaction at A. (b)
Assuming single shear, determine the required pin diameter at A
if the allowable stress is 100 MPa.
[Ans: = 63.435, d = 8.74 mm]

are joined by the simple glued scarf splice shown. Knowing that the
maximum allowable shearing stress in the glued splice is 75 psi, determine
the largest allowable load P which can be safely applied.
[Ans: P = 4.49 kips]

8. The pins on the frame at D and E have a diameter of 0.25 in. If the pins are subjected to
double shear, determine the average shear stress in the pin.
[Ans: VD = 6621 psi, VE = 6217 psi ]

9. The bars of the truss each have a cross-sectional

2
area of 1.25 in . If the maximum average normal stress
in any bar is not to exceed 20 ksi, determine the
maximum value of P that can be used.
[Ans: Pmax = 6.82 kips]

10. Determine the average normal stress developed in links AB and CD of the smooth
two-tine grapple that supports the log having a mass of 3 Mg. The cross-sectional area
2
of each link is 400 mm .
[Ans: 339 MPa]
11. The crimping tool is used to crimp
the end of the wire E. If a force of 20
lb is applied to the handles,
determine the average shear stress in
the pin at A. The pin is subjected to
double shear and has a diameter of
0.2 in. Only a vertical force is exerted
on the wire.
[Ans: 3.71 ksi]

12. The average shear stress in each of the 6-mm diameter bolts and along each
of the four shaded shear planes is not allowed to exceed 80 MPa and 500 kPa,
respectively. Determine the maximum axial force P that can be applied to the
joint.
[Ans: 9.05 kN]
