Material Specification
Adhesives
GM6175M/GM6194M
1 Scope
This specification establishes adhesive performance requirements and the procedures to determine the locking ability of preapplied adhesive
coatings on externally threaded fasteners. This
specification is written for the purpose of identifying and controlling key material properties of adhesive coated externally threaded fasteners.
1.1 Material Description. Two grades of material
are covered by this specification. In addition to
the regular grade, this specification describes a
temperature resistant material that retains locking
ability at 200C, while also conforming to the
regular requirements of this specification.
1.1.1 Material Identification. These materials
are designated with the following GM numbers:
GM6175MMax temperature 135C
GM6194MMax temperature 200C
3 Requirements
3.1 Definition of Terms.
3.1.1 Prevailing On-Torque. The highest torque
measured during nut installation in the on direction. The nut must be in complete engagement
with the adhesive coated portion in the male
thread.
3.1.2 Breakaway Torque. The torque required in
the off direction to break the cured adhesive between the threads of an unseated (zero tension)
nut and bolt assembly.
3.1.3 Prevailing Off-Torque. The maximum
torque measured in the off direction within 360
degree of rotation after the adhesive breakaway
torque measurement.
3.1.4 Break Loose Torque. The torque required
in the off direction to break the hardened adhesive between the threads of a seated nut and bolt
assembly.
3.1.5 Minimum Average. The minimum acceptable average value of a population of data.
3.1.6 Individual Minimum. The minimum acceptable individual value of a population of data.
3.2 Test Methods.
3.2.1 Specimen Preparation. M10 x 1.5 test
bolts, PN 1151610, coated with GMW3179, Code
A (phosphate & oil finish) and test nuts, PN
11516090, shall be used for initial material approval. Test bolts and nuts are available from the
Wilson-Garner Company.
3.2.1.1 All specimens shall be gauged to assure
conformance with dimensional requirements,
