I had a dangerous experience once

when moving furniture. I felt Id tied
a bench on my car securely, but the
wind got under it, ripped off my rope
and flung the bench into the air. It
collapsed in pieces on the road behind
and missed another car by just metres.
I shudder to think what might
have happened had it been a little bit
closer. Ive since transported lots of
large, awkward-shaped items and
always ensure theyre safe. On page 74,
we show you how to tie bulky items
on a ute and get them home safely.

hunting knows that properties
with a deck, outdoor living
area or garden come at a premium.
This is because a usable outdoor
space can add significant value and
building a deck is one of the simplest
ways to increase that value.
Its estimated that budgets for
landscaping and hardscaping have
tripled in the past 15 years, with the
rough average for a reno costing up

to 10% of the value of the home.
With such a good return on
investment, the deck or patio is now
seen as an extra room, with design
and functionality top priorities.
No longer just a warm-weather
pleasure, heating, screening and
lighting options provide lots of ways
to enjoy your outdoor space in style
and comfort all year round.

Fire it up
A source of warmth is the way to
entice people onto the deck in the
cold months, with fireplaces one of
the biggest outdoor trends in the past
five years. Whatever the budget, some
type of heat source can be included.
Portable gas-fuelled braziers are
the ideal choice for small groups, as
they provide good ambient heat in
a limited radius. Costing from $50
to $400, they are economical to run.
Another budget-friendly option
is a fire pit. A camp-style pit in the
ground with a stone circle and gravel
in the base is an informal solution
that can fit into any scheme.

A more sophisticated stainless steel

fire pit is still inexpensive and can be
moved to where the heat is required,
making it a good choice for small
spaces or gatherings on dry, still days.
Chimineas are a different take
on a fire pit and are better suited to
withstand wind, as they have proper
draughting and the fire is contained.
If the budget allows and the space
is large enough, a built-in fireplace
adds instant appeal and will become
a focal point of the space.
The location should take into
consideration privacy needs,
prevailing wind direction and
proximity to other structures.
Remember to check local

council regulations about where
outdoor fireplaces can be located
and if consents are required.
They could be freestanding at the
edge of a patio, built into a retaining
wall or attached to an outdoor kitchen.
For a small fireplace, youll need
at least a 4 x 4m deck or patio and
for a large one at least a 6 x 6m area.
Make sure there is enough room for
furniture in front of your fireplace.
Safety is tantamount when
lighting a fire, particularly on a deck
or patio. Check what the New Zealand
Fire Service (fire.org.nz) recommends
about lighting fires outdoors.

Turning an outdoor area into a room
can be as easy as installing blinds
to enclose the space. Its also a simple
way to provide shelter from the
elements all year round.
At the top end of the scale are
motorised systems with rain-sensitive
shutters, or vertical screens and
awnings. Costing upwards of $1000,
they are a very good permanent
option, if the budget allows.
Simple and cost-effective solutions

also work well. There are two basic
types of outdoor blinds, bistro and
shade, both of which can be used to
protect against wind and rain.
Made from high-quality PVC,
bistro blinds are transparent, so the
views are maintained. Tinted blinds
are also available for greater privacy.
Standard sizes are available off
the shelf for under $200, but blinds
can be customised to fit any space,
with some systems allowing panels to

be secured together to fit larger areas.
Operation is via a rope-and-pulley

To maximise outdoor living during
the colder months, it is crucial to
get the lighting right.
In winter, days are shorter and
while the sun is often high and bright
in the daytime, early nightfall can
prevent you from using the deck for
relaxing or socialising.
Planning the illumination adds
a feeling of warmth and creates an
atmosphere that makes you want
to spend time outside.
Have a couple of different
options to change how the space
looks and feels. A main overhead
light is necessary, but fit a dimmer
so it can be diffused.
If the space is large enough, use
lamps around the perimeter and the
softer glow of candles in the centre.
Feature lights over alfresco dining
areas look good and are practical,
while strings of fairy lights can make
any space feel festive and inviting.
To get the best results and for
maximum safety, only buy or
install lighting products that are
specified for outdoor use.
When it comes to the garden,
use lighting for practical reasons,
such as to illuminate a path and

that keeps on giving, adding
lifestyle benefits and value to the home.
Decks are constantly exposed
to the weather and foot traffic year
round, and can deteriorate quickly,
if not properly maintained.
Quality outdoor timber lasts for
up to 15 years if cared for so it pays
to look after your investment.
Giving the deck a good once-over
at the start of summer and at the end
of autumn prepares it for use and
resolves any potential problems.

Oiling the deck

Decks finished with oil should be
cleaned and re-oiled twice a year
to keep the timber protected.
If decks arent refinished regularly,
the surface will become rough and
appear discoloured and dirty.
Check if a deck needs refinishing
by splashing water on the boards. If
the water soaks in instead of beading
off, then resealing is required.
Wash the deck prior, then apply
two coats of quality oil, selecting
a formula that resists abrasion and
doesnt fade when exposed to UV light.

sanded and re-stained every two years.

Clean the deck
Sweep the deck with a stiff-bristled

broom, then hose the boards down.
Apply deck cleaner to a square metre
at a time, choosing a cleaner that suits
the timber and the finish.
tip The cleaner is activated by water.

Scrub the surface
Use a stiff scrubbing brush to work

the cleaner into the timber, then leave
it to soak for 15 minutes without
letting it dry completely. Hose the area
down to rinse, then clean the rest of
the deck and allow to dry.
Finish the deck
Apply two coats of decking oil

using a lambswool applicator with
a long handle to apply it evenly.
Leave the oil to dry between coats
and use less for the second coat, as
the timber wont absorb it as easily.

Replace old boards

Broken or split timber boards pose
a safety hazard and should be repaired
or replaced as soon as possible.
If hardwood or treated pine
suffers from rot and decay, or the nails
have rusted, then individual boards
or whole sections of a deck may need
to be replaced to keep it safe.
Leave new decking boards for
at least two months before oiling
or staining them to allow the
tannins to be released.
Timber that is cleaned and sealed
regularly is more resistant to rot.
tip If a screwdriver penetrates soft,
spongy timber, this indicates rot.

hammer. Fill any splits in the joists
with two-part epoxy filler to prevent
further moisture damage.

square using a mitresaw and drill two
2mm pilot holes in each board above

Outdoor structures are exposed to
heat, cold and rain, which causes the
expansion and contraction of the
timber, creating cracks and splits.
Cracks continue to move with
the weather, so these areas of damage
and any timber joints in the deck
that have opened up should be filled
to avoid additional moisture problems
and insect infestation.
If old posts are cracked, check
for rot before filling or replace posts
if they are not structurally sound.
Sand and oil the area once the
filler has cured to prevent further

Build a mini storage shed to keep your outdoor essentials
safe from the weather but always within easy reach
small steel shed is a practical

and not-too-expensive way to
store outdoor tools, but its not
the best-looking garden feature. Even
if you paint it, its always just a shed.
Designed to blend in on the
wall of a weatherboard home, this
timber cabinet is secured to the side
of the house then painted to match
the exterior colour scheme.
A streamlined storage solution, it
still has plenty of hanging space for
garden hand tools and theres a shelf
for pots, fertiliser and other essentials.
To withstand exposure to the
elements and resist insect attack,
the cabinet is built from marine-grade
plywood and LOSP treated pine.

Cut the plywood to size using a
circular saw and straightedge guide,
and use a mitresaw to cut the pine.
The tops of the sides are cut at
a 60 angle to match the fall of the
roof, with the side trim pieces and
rafters also cut to match.
Finish he cabine

Attach the cabinet to the wall studs,
then refit the doors and roof. Fill over
the nail and screw heads, apply two
coats of exterior acrylic, then add the
doorhandles and latch.
Attach mounting clips, brackets
and hooks to the interior and doors.
Clad the roof in shingles to match

the house or paint the plywood. Dont
use clay or concrete roof tiles, as they
are thicker than shingles and may be
too heavy for the cabinet.
Using a brad nailer

Securing the cleats, trim and fascia
on this shed is hard work if you
hammer in all the nails by hand.
A powered nailgun like the Ryobi
18V AirStrike brad nailer increases
efficiency and reduces effort.

Three innovative houses prove that building
a designer home doesnt always need a big budget

or many people looking to build

their dream home on a limited
budget, luxurious and modern
architect-designed houses can often
be prohibitively expensive.
However, the best architects
will always work to the budget and
focus on what the client wants rather
than what they would like to design.
Clever thinking can make an
architect-designed home a reality.
Limited space and heritage
restraints were two challenges faced
by the architects when designing
this inner-city family home.
With a tiny 159sqm block and
a budget of $350,000, the two
bedroom home needed to reflect the
character of the street, which was
lined with centuries-old terraces.
Responding to this challenge,
the architects designed a perforated
aluminium screen featuring an artistic
outline of a Victorian era cottage.

The screen is set apart from

a layer of black glass behind it,
allowing people to see out but not in.
Sections of this screen can be
retracted to open up the house to
the outside. This increases the sense
of space and also incorporates the
streetscape as a design element.
Its a small site, so it was important
to get a sense of the outdoors, says
architect Billy Kavellaris.
The combination reading room
and entry reinforces this idea. Its
a sanctuary for relaxation with the
hum of the street just metres away.
The main bedroom is also at the
front of the house and screened only
by a curtain and glass wall.

Small budget, big impact
Built of blackbutt, the house is

designed to look like a cabin.

Massive windows allow views of the
ocean or the adjacent golf course.
We decided from the outset
to allocate a significant part of
the budget to the living spaces
where the family spends most of
its time, says Sharif.
Off the living areas are the
bathroom and three bedrooms, one
with bunk beds for kids sleepovers.
The house was built on a fairly
tight budget. We made it clear from
the beginning what could be achieved
and what wasnt possible. Our clients
were quite happy to be guided by our
suggestions, says Sharif.
The compact bathroom can

be accessed from outside.

When presented with the brief for

a simple and inexpensive home
with only a $300,000 budget,
architect Sharif Abraham designed
this impressive timber house.
The 125sqm home is constructed
from blackbutt milled to a profile
that resembles a log cabin.
Plywood is used for both interior
and exterior walls while the side of
the house not visible from the street
is covered in black corrugated steel.
We originally wanted to use
black rubber, but the budget didnt
allow for it, says Sharif.
Inside, the house is simple, but it
features obvious designer flair with
a spacious, elliptical-shaped living
area leading from the kitchen.

Challenging contexts
With only $300,000 to work with,
architect John Mercuri designed
this unique two-bedroom home.
The land had been subdivided from
an adjacent cottage, which meant the
house would front onto the back lane
rather than the main street.
Bordered by timber and steel
fences, its a stark environment that
wouldnt suit most typical houses.
Well aware of the blocks gritty
urban setting, the client wanted
a house that embraced its context
rather than one that emulated the
look of the surrounding properties.
Our client wanted something
contemporary that responded to
the back lane. He didnt want
a mock-Victorian style, says John.
The property is enclosed by a fence
constructed from tightly spaced rusted
steel posts, while an oversized number
32 gives the house a sense of identity.
The prominent timber, steel and

concrete elements of the home not
only reflect its surroundings, but also
helped minimise construction costs
to keep the project on budget.
The black-stained Cypress pine
cladding gives the home plenty of
character while floor-to-ceiling glass
and translucent polycarbonate walls
allow ample morning light.
Inside, its impossible to tell that
the sleek interior has been built to
a budget. Savings included the MDF
joinery used in the kitchen and the
floors made from concrete mixed with
a white oxide for a clean gallery feel.
The small garden that fronts the
lane has kept landscaping costs down
while allowing the house to take full
advantage of the block.
An atrium garden gives a sense
of space while also providing natural
light and ventilation.

This wall shelving features a total of
five bookcases arranged in two layers.
The front bookcases are mounted on
castors so they can be rolled aside to
access the shelves behind them.
The bookcases are made from
laminated pine with plywood backs.

Create a feature in an empty space

and add storage with a narrow
floor-to-ceiling bookcase nestled in
the curve of a winding staircase.
This shelving is made using
16mm and 9mm MDF sheeting, then
finished with a primer-sealer and
two coats of gloss acrylic paint.
The boards and trim can easily
be cut DIY using a circular saw and
straightedge guide or, for a small fee,
have them cut by the supplier.
As this bookcase is unusually tall,
each shelf is secured with screws
through the sides for added strength.
The unit is mounted on legs and,
to prevent it tipping over, is secured
through the top to the ceiling joists.
A spacer block may
be required to bridge
the gap between the
ceiling and top. Use
long fasteners such as
bugle screws to ensure
adequate penetration.

the sides with screws. Check for square
with the bookcase face down, adding

They are quick and simple to
make from pieces of butt-joined MDF
and if you have the supplier cut the
parts to size, you will only need to

To DIY, use a circular saw and

boxes from one sheet of MDF.
Build the boxes using PVA adhesive
and 40mm x 8g particleboard screws,

heads protruding by 3mm. Measure
between the screws from centre to
centre, then transfer this measurement
to the top edge of a spirit level.

setout marks to the wall. Use a twist
bit to drill 8mm clearance holes into
the plasterboard, then slide the bolts
of the gravity toggles through each
keyhole plate and reattach the toggles.

pull them tight and wind in the bolts.
Check the plates are level, then slot the
screw heads into the keyholes. If the
box isnt snug against the wall, wind in
the mounting screws by one turn.

Perfect for a modern, minimalist
interior, this open shelving system
appears to defy gravity.
With alternating supports that
create the illusion nothing is holding
up one end of each shelf, the secret
to this project is an extra layer of
wall framing and plasterboard.
The extra thickness of the corner
provides robust attachment points
for the supports, while also making it
easy to secure angle brackets that hold
up the overlapping part of the shelves.
For the shelves and supports,
we used plain 16mm MDF board
finished with a primer and two coats
of gloss acrylic paint. Have the MDF
cut to size by the supplier or DIY using
a circular saw and straightedge guide.
You could also use melamine board
with iron-on edge trim or even solid
timber if you prefer a natural finish.

Secure the frame in the corner

Here are three handy people
who turned their backs on their
original career and found success
and happiness in new areas of work,
doing what they love best.
George for hire

After leaving school at 16, George
Zagas found work in a TV repair
shop and served an electronics
apprenticeship. He loved the work
and bought the company after
a decade, then ran it for 12 years.
But the industry was changing, and
not for the better. TVs had become
inexpensive and extended warranties
were more commonplace.
Instead of getting the old TV
fixed by me like they used to in

the past, people would just throw

it out, says George.
As the work dried up, George
also lost the passion for it. Hed
grown tired of running a business,
hiring staff and being a manager.
He loved being self-employed
but wanted more independence.
George had often helped out
his builder uncle on weekends
and he wanted to use the practical
skills that hed learned in his next
business venture.
In 2007, he bought a branch of
the Hire a Hubby franchise near his
home. Since then, the business has
gone from strength to strength.
I still enjoy being my own boss,
but now I dont have the headache
of employing staff and everything
else that goes with it, he says.
Ive done the usual bits around
the house, as well as larger jobs like
a bathroom renovation.

Making the move

Removal firm owner operator Paul
Sherwood studied teaching, but has
been moving furniture for 25 years.
Aside from driving a truck and
lots of heavy lifting, he packs up
homes and even acts as an
unofficial counsellor if the move
is particularly stressful.
Despite long hours, Paul loves
running his own business and
meeting people. Luckily, hes
never had a back injury, despite
lifting heavy items.
I was shown the basics of
lifting on the job years ago, of
using your legs to lift and not
your back, says Paul.
He charges $100 an hour for
truck hire and two men, but poor
access can increase the price.

30% of Pauls jobs come from.

DECORATE
The spice of life

Most spices are plant derivatives
and can be used whole or finely
ground to season or preserve food.
Spices are best kept in airtight,
glass containers in a cool, dry spot
away from direct heat and sunlight.
Store any members of the
pepper family, including paprika
and chilli powder, in the fridge,
to retain their colour and flavour.
ALLSPICE
Also called pimento, this Jamaican
pepper incorporates flavours of cloves,
ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper.
CARDAMOM
Part of the ginger family, it grows in
southern India. Its used in chai and
is popular in rice and meat dishes.
CINNAMON
The outer bark of the cinnamon
tree, which grows in Sri Lanka, is
dried and used to flavour sweet
and savoury foods, and chai.
CLOVES
The dried, unopened flower buds
of an evergreen tree, believed to be
native to Indonesia, complement both
sweet and savoury dishes.
CUMIN
This popular spice has a distinctive
aroma and flavour, and is one of the
main ingredients in curry powder.
NUTMEG
This seed of the nutmeg tree is
encased in a hard shell with a red
covering of mace. Both spices are
used in ground or grated form.
PAPRIKA
Made from ground dried capsicum, this
popular Mexican and Spanish flavouring
comes smoked, sweet or hot, and has
a vibrant deep-red colour.
PEPPERCORNS
Black, green and white peppercorns
are all berries from the pepper plant
in various stages of development.
The black variety is the strongest.
SAFFRON
The dried and ground stigmas of the
saffron crocus flower make this an
expensive spice. It is often used in
Asian and Mediterranean dishes.
STAR-ANISE
This star-shaped fruit is harvested
prior to ripening, then dried to make
the aromatic spice traditionally used
in Chinese five-spice seasoning.
VANILLA
Pods are harvested from the vanilla
orchid. Popular in desserts, the
flavouring comes as a liquid extract,
powder or in whole-pod form.

sure your load stays safely in the tray

for materials, but overloading
your ute to transport them
home could be a recipe for disaster.
Traffic police get several callouts
each week to remove debris from
New Zealands motorways, which is
caused by poorly secured loads.
If something falls off your ute and
injures a person, its your responsibility
and you could be hit with hefty fines.
We checked with experts to find
the best way to secure a load. Its not
just about ensuring it gets home, its
about getting it all there safely.
You can use these methods to move
furniture, too. If it flies off your ute and
causes harm, youll be just as liable.
Wrap flimsy items

DIY jobs can involve hauling lengths
of flimsy materials like guttering
or conduit. To stop it flopping
around or getting damaged on the
way home, wrap both ends with
shrink wrap, about $15 for a roll.
If buying timber as well, bundle it
with the load for added support.

timber, dont rest it on a raised gate,
as it cant hold that kind of weight.
Start by laying out two or more
ratchet straps along the bottom of
the ute bed, then load the longest
and heaviest pieces of timber over the
straps. Stack shorter lengths on top,
then secure the cab end, the middle

and the trailing end with the straps.
Next, anchor the bundle to
the ute bed with two ratchet straps.
Crisscross the straps across the
load, attaching one end to the cab
anchor rings and the tailgate end
to the farthest bundle strap.

If you have a standard-sized tray, youll
have to haul a large load of sheet goods
with the tailgate down.
To safely secure 3000 x 1200mm
plasterboard in a 1800mm tray, lay
out two ratchet straps across the tray,
then check the load limit of your ute
and the weight of each sheet.
Next, to help support the overhang
and protect the plasterboard from any
water or dirt in the tray, lay out at least
two 3000 x 90 x 45mm timber lengths.
To protect the plasterboard edges,
use scrap cardboard or cardboard
corners. Tighten the base straps, then
run two straps from the trays anchor
rings around the back edge of the
sheets and down to the bumper.

If the load extends more than
one metre beyond the back of the vehicle, then you must
attach a suitable warning device to it, according to the
New Zealand Transport Agency (nzta.govt.nz).
During daylight, attach a flag thats at least 40cm long.
It can be coloured white, fluorescent red, orange or yellow.

Basic wall install

The placement of insulation segments
in walls usually happens during
a build or renovation, as once the
internal lining is fixed in position
there is no access to the wall cavities.
Begin by measuring the surface
area in square metres to calculate
the number of packs required for the
job, then purchase segments with the
required R-value and width.
Segments come in 430 and 580mm
widths to match 450 and 600mm
stud spacings. Check the stud depth
to ensure the specified R-value
segments fit snugly in the cavity.
Before commencing installation,
check whether any electrical wiring
is connected to the meter box. Also,
make sure the power is turned off
and any safety hazards are identified.
In external stud walls, segments
must be kept within the frame and
not touch the brickwork or mortar.
To keep the segments contained,
staple one vertical strap or stringline
in position or two horizontal straps or
stringlines for each noggin opening.
When all the segments are in
position inside the stud framework,
the wall linings can be secured.

There is a huge variety of files
available, some of which are for
general use and others for highly
specialised applications.
To tidy the cut end of a threaded
rod, use a half-round file, which has
a narrow edge that can get right into
the groove of the thread.
A round profile is best to clean

up a welding job or remove the burr
edge around a hole drilled in metal.
Start with a second-cut file, then
use a single for a fine finish.
For sharpening a mower blade
or filing away rust, a bastard file
will get the job done quickly.

With virtually no sodium or fat,
theyre cholesterol free, contain the
B vitamins niacin and riboflavin, and
are a good source of dietary fibre.
Tasty and versatile, theyre used
raw or cooked in a number of ways.
Growing mushrooms as a business
began in New Zealand in the 1930s
when an Auckland family imported
button mushroom spawn and started
a crop in a heated shed in Avondale.
It wasnt until the 1960s that
growing techniques were refined
enough to provide the reliable yields
that commercial growers now achieve.
Mushrooms can be grown at home
without any special equipment, and
you dont need a garden as you can
use a kit and cultivate them indoors.
To grow white button and Swiss
brown mushrooms indoors, just add
water and keep the kit in a dark, moist
spot. The spawn of the more exotic
oyster and shiitake can be grown on
a mushroom board, wood or straw.
Depending on the variety, you
can be harvesting mushrooms in
three to five weeks time.

In New Zealand, you can pick wild
mushrooms, and many mushroom
lovers make the pilgrimage to
pine forests in autumn and winter
to harvest slippery jacks and saffron
milk caps, the two edible varieties.

accurately, as fatal poisoning can
occur. Take heed of the saying,
If in doubt, go without.

superfoods. Studies show they could

The light aroma of their delicate
bell-shaped, pinkish-white flowers
attracts bees for pollination.
POSITION in a spot that receives
at least half to a full day of sun to
ensure the fruit ripens well. They
can also be grown in pots.
SOIL needs to be rich in organic
matter, so dig in some well-rotted
compost before planting.
Blueberries like an acidic soil
with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. This can
easily be checked with a pH testing
kit and adding aluminium sulphate
helps increase soil acidity.
WATER regularly, as shallow-rooted
blueberries dont like to dry out.
To prevent fungal disease and the
fruit rotting, water at ground level.
FEEd with a plant food formulated
for azaleas or rhododendrons.
MULCH with lucerne hay or straw
to keep the soil moist.
PRUNE out weak and diseased wood
to keep the centre of the bush open,
then remove flowers in the first year
to encourage growth.

Raspberries
A freshly picked raspberry from
a homegrown bush tastes so much
better than most shop-bought fruit.
Raspberries are easy to grow and
are best planted in a bed of their own.
Unlike other bramble fruit, they pull
free of the core when picked.
If you have enough space in
your backyard, plant raspberries in
rows that run from north to south,
which will ensure that both sides
of the plant get sunlight.
POSITION in a sunny spot protected
from strong winds.
Raspberries prefer cool climates,
but certain varieties, such as Heritage,
will grow in warmer areas, provided
they are planted in a position that is
protected from the hot afternoon sun.
SOIL must be well drained and raised
garden beds are ideal.
WATER the plants regularly, especially
when the fruit is forming.
FEEd with compost or old manure

in spring and summer.
MULCH around the roots with
lucerne hay to keep weeds at bay.
PRUNE plants
each year to
encourage an
abundance of fruit.
For varieties that
fruit in summer,
remove all the
canes that held fruit
during the previous
season immediately
after fruiting.
The new canes
produced can be tied
to a wire or trellis
support and are left to crop
in the following season.
For varieties that fruit in
autumn, cut plants right back to
the ground every winter.
