Microsoft, what eventually went on to become the
world's largest software company.

Allen from a rented accommodation in Albuquerque,
New Mexico. In 1977, Gates and Allen officially

which was highly contribute to his success. Even from his young age,
Bill Gates self-confidence was visible whereas he, who was in his 20s,
handling small Microsoft Company, convinced the giant IBM firm to
include his newly written Operating System. This wouldnt be possible
if he did not present himself with full of self-confidence.

4. INTELLIGENCE:
Fourth is intelligence. Bill Gates is of course intelligence from
his early age itself. This statement is based on his history whereas he
developed a version of programming language BASIC for the first
microcomputer. Microcomputer wasnt popular that time and
developing a programming language for the new born machines
arent easy but yet he made it possible through his intelligence.

5. FLEXIBILITY:
Fifth is flexibility. Bill Gates was quite reasonable and flexible in
his management. Although he is dominant, he still encouraged the
employees and team members to think creativity and all their inputs
are welcome and never limited. A good product would be born from
good idea regardless of how ridicules the idea is. Therefore he was
quite flexible and this trait had resulted Microsoft to continuously
grow with new innovations including several business units. Further
to this, according to the text, Bill Gates delegates authority to
managers to run their independent departments and proves he is
flexible

6. INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL:

Sixth is internal locus of control. Bill Gates was dedicated and
focused on his target and he brought the firm in that right direction.
He had never blamed any other parties over his decision and he was
strict on his decision. The key point is, he does know what he intended
to do and he did so. This leads to his success at young age and drastic
growth of Microsoft.
6

7. INTEGRITY:
Seventh is integrity. Bill Gates is honest to himself and the firm.
He had never cheated or misleads any team players and he worked
with numbers of employees with less conflict. Although there was
argument arise in his meeting, his integrity never changed and
whatever he promised the employees has been execute. For instance,
some of the earlier employees of Microsofts are millionaires today
because he promised them the benefit and as the firm grow, the
employees also grow and they are fulfilled with what he promised.
Emphasize his honesty in business.

Eighth is stability. Bill Gates is emotionally in control. He had
never let his emotions to take over or influence his decisions. He is
always positive in his decisions. His management was effectiveness
and very successful since he ran the management.

know the position of different team members and know how to
communicate with and influence them.

Which motivation would McClelland say was the

major need driving Bill Gates to continue to work
so hard despite being worth many billions of
dollars?
7

The major need that drives Bill Gates throughout the

success is the need for achievement. Since the day he started
with Microsoft, he had never been stopped from setting his
targets or goals and walking proactively toward achieving it.
Since his younger age, he had come across much achievement
and he still did not stop his eager for achievements. This was
further encouraged by his effective leadership traits. Such as
internal locus on control, he would not be turned down easily
with failure but he tends to keep focused on his wish to achieve
what he wanted.
Bill Gates had self-confidence in presenting his product.
Even when he was 20s, he did manage to present his Microsoft
Operating System to giant IBM and was accepted as well.
Although Microsoft had come across many lawsuit against the
firm, he still confident that he is doing the right decision for
himself and the firm.
On the other hand, Bill Gates are vision and goals oriented.
He isnt dreaming in his own world but he is demanding for what
can be made possible today for current trend. These goals are
realistic and within the margin of achievement. This continuous
need for achievement drives his through all his days. Even from
the text, we can conclude that Bill Gates did not stop setting his
goals. This is because it is clear from the text that he has a vision
to merge the home entertainment into one single box. The
Microsoft already released its Media Center PC which competing
directly with TiVo in European market. Now he had vision to
make the Media Center PC to provide the total access to digital
media, with every screen in the house being a portable device.
With just one single remote control, the whole in-house
entertainment can be controlled.

These achievements are the one keep driving his. If we

drew something out of the history; first he achieved in computer
operating system industry with Windows Clients, second he
achieved software industry with Information Worker completes
software suite, third he achieved in hardware by introducing
server tools and embedded devices including mobile devices with
Windows Business Solutions, fourth achieved in Internet Service
Provider (ISP) industry with MSN, fifth achieved in gaming
industry with Xbox products, and finally entering home
entertainment industry which he had set the goal and would be
achieved in time to come. There are many of his achievement
missed in this short list as we intended to only focus on his big
achievement.
Nearly all the goals set by his was achieved by him and the
firm because of his realistic thinking. Together with that he does
take moderate risk when entering each of new industry. He set
himself and the firm in a competitive environment because in
every industry that Microsoft entered, they are competing
against rivals. Including the recent gaming industry whereas
they competing with Nintendo and Sony, and Home
Entertainment industry competing with TiVo.

Self-Concept of Bill Gates and how does it

Affect his Business Success
The positive and negative attitude people have about themselves

Self-concept is really important to a leader. It drives them to be wiser

in their leadership. The self-concept is the accumulation of knowledge about
the self, such as beliefs regarding personality traits, physical
characteristics, abilities, values, goals, and role. Bill gates have high selfesteem. That means Gates has a positive view of himself and the business.
This tends to lead him to confidence in his own abilities.
Gates started his knowledge in his career when he was just in his
earlier age of 13. Because of his self-confidence, he believes that he got the
ability to success in future. Other than that, Bill Gates has the thought that
he is not worrying about what others think. He believes in himself, and
makes him not bothering about what others says or thinks about him.
Nevertheless, he wont be the worlds popular.
Another self-concept of Bill Gates is a belief that he needs to be more
disciplined. Even with his employees he practices discipline. For example,
he wants his employees to be on time during meetings which is called Bill
Meetings as well. Other than that, to maintain his productivity level and to
get a good output from his employees, during the meeting, Gates often
interrupts presentations to question facts and assumptions. Team members
are expected to stand up to gates and give logical answers to his questions.
Other than this self-concept, Bill Gates also has a willingness to adopt and
learn new things, which makes him very wise to this world. Bill Gates
always keep on trying new software in his own PC, which make him come
up with new ideas for his software world.
Bill Gates has patient to learn new things. It shows one of his selfconfidences. And he was willing to adopt new things and make it into
reality. In the other hand, Gates have patience. Thats the most common
self-concept that all should have for succeed in life. As Bill Gates has more
patience. Along the way he learns the new things about software, his
patience helps him a lot. For example; if he doesnt have patience, for sure
he wont be able to sit for long hours in front his computers and keep on
trying on the software. That is the plus point for Gates to succeed in life as
well. And Gates self-concept makes him a worlds wealth person and also a
great leader as well.

10

Is Bill Gates ethical in business?

It merely impossible for a man to grow that fast if he tends to be only

ethical. At some scenes, they need to go down to earth and more realistic,
so the unethical practices might come in as well. Same as in Bill Gates life,
he is much more ethical in term of handling employees. He gives them what
they needs and he gives them their part as well. Bill Gates gives a small part
of his shares in tends of bonus to his employees, so that they will work more
hard to increase the share price which will help them to increase their
income too. In such ways Bill Gates can be said is an ethical person. Bill
Gates is an undisputed leader and pioneer of the "information age".
Now he seems to lead businesses and individuals in taking take social
responsibility and philanthropy to a new level. His example of providing a
major portion of his personal wealth to start the Gates Foundation has not
gone unnoticed. Other business leaders are such as Warren Buffet who the
money and investment world considers a great leader have stepped forward
and contributed billions of dollars to help the foundation.
A lot of people say that Bill Gates is wrong in his ways of getting rich
with a monopoly. He sells large quantities of products cheaply so that
everyone is hooked and then raises the prices. If a competitor comes
along he just lowers them until they are gone. He has always been smarter
than his competition. When Microsoft was created, his dream was to have
a computer on every desk and home, all running windows and Microsoft
software. He is very close to reaching that goal. It was ruled that Microsoft
was a monopoly and was supposed to divide into two companies. Nothing
ever happened, though, and no restrictions were set. Really, he is not doing
anything illegal, but his way of business is seems to be slightly unethical
when the question of is monopoly right? arises among the players in the
industry as well as the Department of Justice.
Rather than debating he is ethical or unethical, we can roll the ball to
the other end first whereas Microsoft started as a small firm, but when they
grow larger, Microsoft never ignored any industry players and they had
collaboration with their partners. Microsoft had been the firm that
shadowed and helped the small players in the software industry which they
players are allowed to develop their software application for Microsofts
Operating System. Among them are the Adobe who had grown in
11

Microsofts shadow developing products for Microsoft Operating System

and now Adobe firm itself is a giant in the software industry by holding the
prestige of king of designing application as they have large numbers of
product focusing on graphics and designing.

Bill Gates and LMP (Leader Motive Profile)

Firstly, LMP stands for Leader Motive Profile. LMP is the set
of traits that match up to the typical effective leader. They are
tends to have a high need for power, that is greater than need for
achievement, and a moderate need for affiliation. But it is vary
significantly from leader to leader. In our opinion, Bill gates dont
have LMP. The reason we say this is because according to this
case study, gates dont have a high need on power, because gates
gave his CEO position to Steve Ballmer. And bill gates still runs
Microsoft with his current title of chairman and chief software
architect. Gates still provides strong leadership but now focuses
more on software development, with Ballmer focusing on
managing Microsoft. If bill gated has a LMP, for sure he wants
the power more than everything and he wont give his CEO title
to anyone. Gates actively participates in and coordinates
business units, and holds Microsoft together, but he delegates
authority to managers run their independent departments.

OHIO STATE AND UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

STUDIES
Bill Gates dynamic leadership style can be seen through the studies
done by Ohio State and University of Michigan. The two theories are
Initiating Structure/Production Oriented and Consideration/Relationship
Oriented Theories. Initiating Structure/ Production Oriented leaders have a
constant leader influence, direct or close supervision of employees, many
rules, and focus on getting work done. The Consideration/Relationship
Oriented leaders have a relationship-focused environment, less direct
supervision, fewer rules, and focus more on employee concern and needs.
Gates exemplifies parts of both theories which enhance his leadership skills.
He is viewed by many as a task-oriented individual. It is most clearly seen
through his selection of upper-level employees who are chosen to reflect his
own business ideas and goals. He expects all of his employees to complete
their designated tasks to perfection.

Bill gates style and Fiedler Model

15

"In Fiedler's model, leadership effectiveness is the result of

interaction between the style of the leader and the characteristics of
the environment in which the leader works"

RELATION-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP:
Leaders who describe their preferred coworker in favorable terms,
with high LPC, are purported to derive major satisfaction from establishing
close relationships with fellow workers. High LPC leaders are said to be
relationship-orientated.

TASK-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP:
Leaders who describe their least preferred coworker unfavorable terms,
with a low LPC, are derived major satisfaction by successfullycompleting a
task.

16

1- Leader-member relations: the degree to which the employees

accept the leader.
2- Task structure: the degree to which the subordinates jobs are
described in detail.
3- Position power: the amount of formal authority the leader possesses
by virtue of his or her position in the organization.
So in this case Bill Gates found most favorable place where
positional power is high as he has most authorities in the firm, task
structure is also defined as he gives the direction to
subordinate/follower to fulfill his vision, and last leader-member
relation is also good. Thats mean Bill Gates is more likely Taskoriented leader who want performance from his subordinate/follower
and work has to be done to achieve the goal/objective of the
company

MOTIVATION
The best leaders in the corporate world are those who are very
dynamic, who are able to change with the times, which adapt and
thrive in unfamiliar and in most cases challenging territories. Bill
Gates is a leader who far exceeds the qualities that make a great
leader great, so much so that he, according to official SEC documents,
employs roughly 89,809 workers worldwide.
Having as many employees as Bill Gates has, it is easy to
understand that keeping in contact with every single one, let alone
keeping them all motivated, can be a very difficult task. However, Bill
takes several approaches when dealing with both keeping involved
and motivating his employees. Being the founder of multi-billion dollar
technologies based company; Bill looks to technology to run almost
every aspect of his company; including keeping in contact with
employees and upper level managers worldwide through email and
video conferencing.
Bill works hard to understand and greatly values what his
employees think. He was quoted saying, "From the beginning, I've
17

relied on others to apply their thinking and expertise to support my

own, and in many cases they've filled in where I've felt my own
knowledge has been lacking." Since he only hires the highest of
quality workers, he believes everyone is able to contribute something
positive to his company; he gives them the opportunity twice a year to
prove this belief correct. For at least 12 years, Bill has opened the
floor to his employees, during what has become known as Think
Week, to give them the opportunity to contribute any new ideas on
how the company can improve for the future.
Since the company knows workers tend to stay long hours, and
many times even spend the night, a comfortable work environment is
crucial for the employees to perform at their highest quality.
Employee empowerment and feeling part of a team is important to
any company, especially one like Microsoft that deals with billions of
dollars a year; the company must be a well-oiled machine on every
level to continue to thrive.

performance determining their raises, promotions & other
rewards.
Coercive
Power

The use of coercive power involves punishment & withhold

ing of rewards to influence compliance. It is also called

Bill Gates it is more of loyalty due to good behavior
towards his employees. People stay at Microsoft for longer
time period than most of the companies.

INFLUENCE TACTICS
RATIONAL PERSUASION:
Bill Gates extremely used this tactic by applying its
functions in a very logical manner. Bill always explained why the
objectives need to be met. He was very clear on the benefits
which the followers would get &conveyed the same to others. He
was very motivational regarding the set objectives & provided
subtle evidences that the objectives can be met. He was very
quick on explaining how problems & concerns will be handled.
He always innovate newer technologies & was very clear on their
strength over others.
19

PRESSURE
Bill Gates very frequently used the pressure influencing
tactics from fear of reprimands, probation, to suspension or
dismissal.

TEAM LEADERSHIP
So many entrepreneurs fall prey to the huge workload and
the feelings of overwhelm that await them as they try to fulfill
every single role in their business. Part of my mission in working
with business owners is to enable them to create their vision and
implement systems and teams that support the realization of
their dream. : If we werent still hiring great people and pushing
ahead at full speed, it would be easy to fall behind and become a
mediocre company, says Gates. From Microsofts inception,
Gates prioritized his team, bringing in only trusted friends to
help him get the company started. As the company grew, he
insisted that they hire only the most capable young minds and
strove to create a small and creative environment for them to
thrive in. Microsoft succeeded not only because of Gates, but
also because of the strong team that stood behind him.

CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP
Bill Gates is also a very charismatic leader. A charismatic leader is
someone who uses their own personal abilities and talents in order to have
profound and extraordinary effects on followers. Since the creation of
Microsoft, Gates has inspired many people through his passion for software
and technology which is shown through his many successes at Microsoft in
the early days of the Microsoft Corporation, Bill Gates has demonstrated the
traits of a charismatic leader (Guo, Ruane, Galli-Debicella, Nguyen, &
20

Manz, 2008). Before his innovative new software company had a single
employee, Gates showed the drive and vision that foreshadowed his future
leadership. Gates himself is dismissive of the visionary role (Dearlove,
1999, p. 111) he plays as a leader, but his business success proves ability to
see trends and adapt to them as well as be a trendsetter. This vision was
apparent from the onset, when Gates dropped out of Harvard to pursue
programming (Hughes, et al., 2009), and continued over his many years as
CEO of Microsoft such as in product development and organizational
structure. His vision seems almost instinctive, and his followers have come
to know and respect it (Dearlove, 1999).
Vision is a characteristic shared by charismatic leadership and
transformational leadership, as in Basss Theory of Transformational and
Transactional leadership (Hughes, et al., 2009), and not the only such trait
Bill gates demonstrates as a leader. As the company grew, Gates maintained
his charismatic features but shifted into a more transformational
approach (Guo, et al., 2008). He clearly demonstrated attention to a
fundamental value system within his organization. His leadership expected
and recognized hard work and intellectualism as key values (Dearlove,
1999), and he also regarded reflection and introspection as essential
aspects of leadership and followership. For example, Gates ensured that the
main Microsoft campus would have plenty of open space for employees to
sit and think, (Dearlove, 1999, p. 68).
Despite Bill Gatess great successes during his leadership at
Microsoft, not all of his qualities neatly fit under the umbrellas of
charismatic or transformational leadership. Rhetoric skills and the ability to
adapt language to different groups is key to communicating vision and
engaging with followers (Hughes, et al., 2009). However, Bill Gates is not
known for engaging or adaptive communication. Rather, he is well known to
be rude, abrasive, and sometimes dismissive of others ideas (Dearlove,
1999). According to Dearlove, Gates has improved somewhat in his
communication style, but it is not Gatess strongpoint and can be
intimidating to some followers. Additionally, as Microsoft grew to epic
proportions and took on a great deal of legal challenges, Gatess
strongpoints of vision and values were not enough to sustain his leadership;
he passed the reins to Steve Ballmer in 2005 (Guo, 2008).

21

LEADER AND FOLLOWER RELATIONSHIP

Gates as a leader had always maintained his relationship between his
followers and his co-workers in a perfect manner. He never under estimated
his followers. Gates always conveys his objectives which need to be
achieved, in a clear manner to his followers. And he also conveys the
benefits, which they will get, if they achieve those objectives. Gates Has
said it by himself that the Microsoft would have been unsuccessful without
my strong team, which stood behind me. Bill Gates once stated his hiring
practice as, I dont hire bozos, (Dearlove, 1999, p.65). Gates
demonstrated foresight in his hiring, actively selecting dedicated, hardworking individuals. He did not look for drones or conformist followers, but
rather expected exemplary followers (Hughes, et al., 2009): those who are
intelligent and innovative. This seems to contrast with Gatess sometimes
rude, authoritative demeanor, but he fully recognized that without strong
talent, Microsoft could not be what it is today (Dearlove, 1999).
When the company began, Microsoft employees knew that they could
not compete with Bill Gatess skill or dedication, but they worked extremely
hard nonetheless, competing with one another and building their own
dedication to the company (Hughes, et al., 2009). Employees were very
green, looking to prove themselves to Gates and to each other, and to put
in whatever work necessary to meet deadlines, even forgoing sleep or
spending nights in the office. This extreme level of motivation does not
always equate to job satisfaction, but generally demonstrate the type of
appeal and impact Gates has on followers.
Whatever their night-time habits, what Gates has created at
Redmond is a unique working environment. It is at one and the same time a
hothouse of creativity, and highly efficient at project management to ensure
products are, with some notable exceptions, delivered on time, (Dearlove,
1999, p. 72).
Gatess approach and the internal competition at Microsoft mirror the
characteristics of followers in a transformational leadership environment
outlined by Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2009). Followers accept being
subordinates, but effectively work toward a larger, common goal, and do so
with intense passion (Dearlove, 1999). Many achieve leadership at
Microsoft in their own right through these characteristics that Ruben
22

(2006) would define as personal competencies. These competencies,

combined with positional expertise, make Microsoft employees uniquely
dedicated and sought-after by other employers, and help define Gates as
one of the most influential leaders in corporate history.

Bill Gates' Secrets of Success

Here are some of Bill Gates secrets of success.
1. Learning Much
Bill Gates read a lot of since his a child. He considered, the habit of
reading is a success factor.
I put a passion for continuous learning in higher positions. When I
was young enough, I get used to read lots of books.
Read about many subjects is a good thing. Of course today, much
easier to go online and find information about topics you interest.
Have such a sense of curiosity about the world helps anyone to
succeed, no matter what job they choose,
2. Long-term Vision
Bill Gates had a well-known long-term vision. He predicts that
business will explode in the future. As a result, he was always one or two
steps ahead of his competitors. As his vision, that computers will be
needed by many people.
We always overestimate the change that will emerge in the next two
years and too low estimate the changes that will appear in the next ten
years. Do not allow yourself to fall asleep and not act
3. Act Immediately
23

Bill Gates likes to act immediately without any delay. He has many
ideas and makes it happen soon. Those habits are one of the secrets of
his success.
I am doing great and immediate action. It is like the proverbial
rubber meets the road. If youre in the right place at the right time and
had a vision of where technology will go but not take action, you will
never be successful
4. Accept Criticism
To achieve a success, someone must be able to hear and learn from
the criticism that comes. Bill Gates said he was happy to listen a
criticism of Microsoft customers.
Your consumers who most unhappy are the largest source for you to
learn
Our customers are coming from Japan, generally speaking very
loudly about the quality and accuracy, it is something fantastic
5. Learn the Technology
To the young man, Bill Gates suggested to learn a lot about
technology. Therefore, the skills of using technology could lead someone
to success.
A solid knowledge of productivity software and other IT tools to be
the basic foundation for success in various careers. In addition, it is also
a good background in mathematics and science.
If you see the most interesting things that emerged in the last decade,
whether its the cool things like portable music players and video game
or something more practical like a Smartphone and medical technology,
all of which come from the fields of science and technology.
Today and in the future, some jobs with the most impact will be
related to software, whether it is developing software for companies like
Microsoft or helping other organizations succeed by using information
technology tools
6. He Never Stopped Asking Questions

24

I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity andwilling

ness to solve tough problems, were going to make some amazing
achievements, said Gates speaking to the future possibilities for medicin
e, education and technology. When Gates faced a dilemma, he didnt stop
and give up. He asked questions about what could be done to
solve the problem. From his business activities to his philanthropic
efforts, Gates curiosity and desire to constantly be learning has been
one of the key factors behind his success. If I'd had some set idea of a
finish line, don't you think I would have crossed it years ago? asks
Gates. Showing no signs of slowing down, Gates continues to fuel his
business, inspire his workers and make his contribution to the global
village. At Microsoft, there are lots of brilliant ideas but the image is
that they all come from the top, says Gates. Im afraid thats not quite
right. While Gates has been the famous face of Microsoft for over thirty
years, it took the help of numerous other trusted individuals to help
realize the companys success. When Allen and Gates first met as
students at Lakeside, they instantly formed a strong bond over their
passion for computers. And, it was a bond that would last for the rest of
their lives.

Conclusion
Taking into account all above mentioned implementation of
leadership theories and traits, it is very much simple to conclude that Bill
Gates is a successful leader and has perfectly demonstrated his ability and
potential. He has the ability and attitude to inspire other people to join his
innovative work. He achieved success through his leadership style,
remarkable vision, and extreme desire to win.
Bill is a true leader who greatly values his employees ideas and
views. He has distinguished himself producing the top software for personal
computers to make people life easy. He has the characteristics of
entrepreneurial leadership as he started his own business along with other
25

partner. He is a determined leader who has found and operated an

innovative business that shows his commitment towards his idea and
mission of making computer necessity of all people. He was a task oriented
and charismatic person. He drives himself and others, but yet uses his
personality to inspire others.
Bill Gate is not successful as a leader from beginning. Like most
other entrepreneurs, Gate has faced failures as well in the start of his
career. But what distinguishes Gates from the rest was his ability to
rebound and learn lessons from his mistakes.
It is necessary to underline that Bill Gates is not viewed only a
successful businessman but rather as a leader having a number of strong
qualities. To put it more precisely, he managed to use his talent as an IT
specialist in computer programming and developing new software.
Moreover, due to his enthusiasm and leaders charisma he managed to
convince his collaborators at the beginning of his career to join him and
create Microsoft which later became one of the most successful and
commercially profitable companies in the world. He also proved that a good
and successful leader has to be able to forecast the future development as
Bill Gates did in software and computing field. At the same time, it is
important to underline that his idea was not an occasional insight but rather
a mission and mission typical to this strong leader because later he
repeatedly demonstrate his ability to constantly implement innovations.
Bill Gates is quite a contradictive leader because he tends to be quite
democratic and liberal within the company but in his relations with the
major competitors and the world market expansion he is quite an
authoritarian person. Such attitude probably affects customers as well who
have a little choice but Microsoft products. Nevertheless, the position of
Microsoft, headed by Bill Gates, remains to be quite strong.
