3 INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING

3.1

Apparatus version
The Sunmaster is equipped with an anti-islanding device that ensures the switch off in
case of grid failure. European countries maintain different regulations with regard to
anti-islanding devices and the supply of energy back to the utility grid in general. The
common islanding device is the QNS, which switches off the inverter if the grid voltage
or frequency is out of range. In some countries like Germany the ENS device
(VDE0126 compliant) which also measures the grid impedance, is compulsory.
Mastervolt can provide both the QNS and the ENS versions of the Sunmaster. Both
versions are available as several variants, suited to locally regulations.
Check from the part number on the type number plate whether the version of the
Sunmaster is appropriate to be connected to the local utility grid. Refer to table 1:

3.2

Mounting and installation

The Sunmaster can be mounted in the AC distribution cabinet or in the vicinity of the
solar panels. Obey the following stipulations during installation:

The Sunmaster is designed for indoor use only, according to safety class IP23.
Ambient temperature: -20 ... 50C; (power derating above 40C)
Humidity: 0-90% non condensing
Do not install the Sunmaster in environments where there is heavy dust
development.
If the Sunmaster is installed in the immediate vicinity of living areas, take into
account that the Sunmaster can produce a slight noise level when operating (refer
to section 4.4).
Mount the Sunmaster vertically on a solid wall.
The Sunmaster must be mounted in such a way that obstruction of the airflow
through the ventilation openings is prevented
No objects must be located within a distance of 10 cm around the Sunmaster.
Keep at least 30 cm in between the inverters when several Sunmasters are
installed next to each other.
Make sure that the hot air that is developed during operation will be discharged by
forced ventilation when installing the Sunmaster in a closed section.
Choose an appropriate AC-wire diameter, so that the wire resistance between the
Sunmaster and the AC distribution will not exceed 0.25 Ohm. Directive: up to 25
meters length, choose a wire diameter of 3 x 2.5 mm. Choose a larger wire size
for lengths above 25 meter.

The AC/DC and grounding cables are connected at the bottom side of the cabinet. If
necessary, the cabling can be fed from the top to the bottom side of the cabinet along
the backside of the cabinet.
Determine the mounting spots on the basis of figure 7 - outline drawing Sunmaster on
page 23. Use suitable screws and dowels to fix the Sunmaster to the wall. Turn the
mounting screws already into the wall. Place the cabinet over the screws. Then fasten
the screws.

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

3.2.1 Use of spring-cage terminal blocks

Depending on the model, the Sunmaster is equipped with spring-cage terminal blocks
to connect the AC- and DC-wiring. Use a maximum wire diameter of 4mm (stranded
cable with cord end terminals) or 6mm (hard-core wire) to fix to the AC and DC
spring-cage connections. Strip the cable insulation 8-10mm.
Use an insulated 4mm flat blade screwdriver to open the spring-cage clamp.
CAUTION!
Connect the wiring to the spring-cage terminals as stated in figure 1.

3.3

Connection of solar (DC) cabling

The solar or DC side of the system consists of several photovoltaic (solar) modules,
further mentioned as PV modules. The PV-modules are connected in series to form
one or two strings. These strings consist of plus (+) and a minus () connections that
can be connected directly to the Sunmaster. The Sunmaster is suited to connect two
strings maximum, both existing of an equal quantity of identical PV-modules.
The connection procedure described below incorporates several measurements which
can only be carried out when sufficient irradiation is present. Installation should
therefore be carried out during daytime only.
CAUTION!
Short circuiting or reversing polarity may lead to damage to the Sunmaster, the
cabling and/or the terminal connections.
Follow all steps of the installation instructions in order of succession as described
Depending on the model of the Sunmaster, the DC cabling can be connected in two
ways: either using MultiContact connection material (refer to section 3.3.1 and figure
2) or directly onto the spring-cage terminal blocks on the power board inside the
cabinet, by feeding the cabling through the cabinets cable glands (refer to section
3.3.2 and figure 3).

3.3.1 DC connection by means of MultiContact connectors

In this case the Sunmaster is equipped with four MultiContact contra plugs: two string
connections each consisting of a plus (+) and a minus () connection. MultiContact
connection material is touch proof and can be connected to the Sunmaster directly.
1 Check the voltage and polarity of each string with a suitable DC Voltmeter.
Connect the measuring pins to the corresponding plus (+) and minus () plug of
each string.
This voltage should be equal to the open circuit voltage (Voc) per PV module (refer
to the specifications of the modules), multiplied by the number of modules in each
string. Depending on the solar irradiation, the measured value should be equal to
70-95% of the theoretically calculated value. To match the specifications the
measured voltage should be between 190 and 450VDC for Sunmaster QS1200
models and between 210 and 450VDC for Sunmaster QS2000 models
2 In case of two strings (which must be identical), check whether the two measured
values are nearly identical (maximum deviation: 5%).
3 Check for each string the leakage current to ground. Measure the leakage current
with a suitable meter (mADC) between the plus (+) connection and ground and the
minus () connection and ground for each string. This value must be 0 (or less
than 1mA).
4 Connect the MultiContact plugs of the string cabling to the corresponding contra
plugs on the Sunmaster (Refer to figure 2: [9] for the plus (+) connections and [10]
for the minus () connections).

10

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

5 If only one string is connected, the unused MultiContact contra plugs should be
covered using the supplied caps.
6 When the DC-cabling has been installed correctly, some indication LEDs on the
front panel will illuminate, indicating that the AC side has not yet been connected:
- Both the red LED (diagnostic) and the yellow LED (0% / general fault) illuminate
- With the ENS versions the yellow LED (50% / grid quality) illuminates as well.
WARNING!
Never disconnect the MultiContact plugs during operation of the Sunmaster.
Not complying with this instruction may cause a spark or an electric arc. Should an arc
develop, both plug and socket of the Sunmaster must be replaced.

Figure 2: Connection of the DC-cabling using MultiContact connection material

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

11

3.3.2 Direct connection of the DC cabling onto the power board

WARNING!
The voltages present on the DC-cabling of the PV modules are high (up to 450 VDC)
and cannot be switched off. The stripping and connection of the cabling should
therefore be carried out with the utmost care and suitable tools. The voltages of the
DC system are floating (class II): there is no connection to ground. This means that
when one of the string connections (plus or minus) is accidentally touched, this will not
directly lead to personnel harm or accidents. However, this should be avoided in any
case! Short circuiting of the plus (+) and minus () connections must be avoided at any
cost!
Follow in detail all steps of the installation instructions in order of succession as
described below:
1 Open the connection area at the bottom side of the cabinet. To do so, loosen the
two screws at the bottom side and slide the front cover plate from the cabinet.
2 The cabinet is fitted with four glands for the DC cabling (refer to figure 3, parts [9]
and [10]). Feed one non-stripped DC cable per gland into the cabinet.
3 Open the orange lids of both DC separators (part [4] in figure 3).
4 Strip approx. 8 mm of the plus (+) cable of string 1 with appropriate tools and
connect the cable to the first plus (+) PCB connector (part [2] in figure 3). This is a
spring-cage terminal block that can be opened using a flat blade screwdriver (see
section 3.2.1 and figure 1). Check the connection by pulling the cable.
5 Repeat this for the minus () connection of string 1 and connect the cable to the
first minus () PCB connector on the PCB (part [3] in figure 3).
6 Check the voltage and polarity of the string with a suitable DC voltage meter. To
do so, insert the voltmeters measuring pins into screw drivers opening of the
terminal block. This voltage should be equal to the open circuit voltage (Voc) per
PV module (refer to the specifications of the modules), multiplied by the number of
modules in each string. Depending on the solar irradiation, the measured value
should be equal to 70-95% of the theoretically calculated value. To match the
specifications the measured voltage should be between 190 and 450VDC for
Sunmaster QS1200 models and between 210 and 450VDC for Sunmaster
QS2000 models
7 In case of two strings, repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 for the second string. At similar
circumstances (equal solar irradiation) the measured voltage of the second string
must be near to the measured voltage of the first string (maximum deviation: 5%)
8 Check for each string the leakage current to ground. Measure the leakage current
with a suitable meter (mADC) between the plus (+) connection [2] and ground and
the minus () connection [3] and ground for each string. This value must be 0 (or
less than 1mA).
9 Close both DC separators by pushing the orange lids back in position (part [4]). Be
sure to lock these separators firmly. Beware: a loose or unreliable contact may
result in a defective Sunmaster!

12

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

10 When the DC-cabling has been installed correctly, some indication LEDs on the
front panel will illuminate, indicating that the AC side has not yet been connected:
- Both the red LED (diagnostic) and the yellow LED (0% / general fault) illuminate
- With the ENS versions the yellow LED (50% / grid quality) illuminates as well
11 Tie the cabling together using a tie-rap directly after the glands, inside the cabinet.
Tighten the glands (parts [9] and [10] in figure 3) to ensure the pull relief.

3.4

Connection of the AC cabling

The Sunmaster may only be used in a in a permanent installation, connected to a
separate AC distribution group, to which no other electrical equipment is connected.
The cabling between the junction box or electric cable duct and the Sunmaster must
be double insulated. Use an AC-wire diameter of 3 x 2.5 mm at least.
Depending on the model of the Sunmaster, the AC cabling can be connected in two
ways: by means of a Powercon connector (see section 3.4.1 and figure 4) or directly
on the power board inside the cabinet (refer to section 3.4.2 and figures 2 and 3). In
the latter case the cabling is led through the cabinets cable glands

Not complying with this instruction may cause damage to the Sunmaster and/or to the
Powercon connector.

14

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

3.4.2 Direct connection of the AC cabling on the Power Board

1 Cut off the AC voltage by switching off the AC distribution switch in the AC
distribution cabinet.
2 Feed the AC cabling through the gland into the cabinet (part [8] in figure 2/3).
3 Connect the AC-cabling to the corresponding terminal blocks on the power board
(L, N and PE). This is a spring-cage terminal block that can be opened using a flat
blade screwdriver (see section 3.2.1 and figure 1).
4 Tighten the gland to ensure the pull relief.
5 Switch on the AC voltage again and check with an adequate multimeter whether
the voltage is present at the terminal block
6 Close the connection area of the Sunmaster.

3.5

Grounding cable
If you make a connection between the PV-modules and the ground, you need to lead
the grounding cable together with the DC-cables to the Sunmaster and then to the AC
distribution. Make a connection between the grounding cable going from the PVmodules to the AC-distribution and the cabinet of the Sunmaster. For this purpose a
grounding terminal is situated at the bottom side of the cabinet (part 7 in figure 4)

3.6

Installation of the QS-Display (optional)

The optional QS-Display comes with a front cover plate. To install the QS-Display,
replace the standard front cover plate by the QS-display cover plate
1 Open the connection area at the bottom side of the cabinet. To do so, loosen the
two screws at the bottom side and slide the front cover plate from the cabinet
2 Connect the QS-Display to the display connector (part 11 in figure 2/3) by means
of the flatcable provided. Lead the flatcable through the right hand side of the
connection area, avoiding the cable from touching the fan or DC-cabling.
3 Fix the front cover with integrated QS-Display onto the connection area and tighten
the two screws again.
4 If the QS-Display is connected correctly, the text QS1200 or QS2000 (model
dependent) appears in the display.
5 Store the original front cover along with the users manual of the Sunmaster.

3.7

Commissioning
If connection has been made correctly and solar irradiation is sufficient, the Sunmaster
will switch on automatically:

The red indication LED (diagnostic) on the front panel will stay illuminated for 10
up to 300 seconds (reclosure time, depending on the model); meanwhile the
yellow LED (0% / general fault) will flash.
With the ENS versions of the Sunmaster the yellow LED (50% / grid quality) is
illuminated as well.
Next the red LED will extinguish and the yellow LED (0%) flashes for 5 seconds,
indicating a self test
Now the Sunmaster switches on. The LED-bar displays an indication of the energy
that is generated by means of your PV-modules.

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

15

4 OPERATION
After installation the Sunmaster will switch on automatically if solar irradiation is
sufficient. The Sunmaster operates automatically: there is no need for adjustment or
operation.

4.1

LED-bar

The Sunmaster is standard provided with an integrated LEDbar (figure 6) at the front side of the cabinet. Under normal
circumstances the LED-bar indicates the amount of power that
is fed into the grid by the Sunmaster: the more LEDs illuminate,
the more power is converted.
After connection of the PV-modules and during sunrise a
system check is carried out, indicated by the illumination of
several LEDs. This system check takes up to 15 seconds.
In case of a system failure, the cause of the failure is displayed
by means of a combination of illuminating LEDs: the red
diagnostic LED illuminates in combination with one or more
yellow LEDs. Refer to table 2 (chapter 6) for an explanation of
the power- and failure indications.

4.2
Figure 6: LED-bar

4.3

QS Display (optional)

The QS Display can easily be installed in the Sunmaster. It

enables the user to monitor the daily yields for the last 20 days,
the total energy and operating hours, and a variety of actual
readings. Refer to the users manual of the QS Display for
extended operating instructions.

Monitoring
The Sunmaster has two RJ-45 connectors that can be connected to the QS Databus.
Mastervolt provides several monitoring solutions like PC software, dataloggers, remote
monitoring and so on. Consult our web-site at www.mastervoltsolar.com for a
comprehensive overview of all possibilities.

4.4

Forced cooling
For an optimum internal temperature control the Sunmaster is provided with a cooling
fan. Depending on circumstances, the cooling fan starts running slowly at
approximately 50% of the nominal power. As internal temperature rises, the cooling
fan will increase its speed. This is a normal effect which has a positive contribution to
the efficiency and lifetime of the Sunmaster.

16

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

5 MAINTENANCE
No specific maintenance to the Sunmaster is required. Examine your electrical
installation on a regular base, at least once a year. Defects such as loose connections,
burnt wiring etc. must be corrected immediately.
If necessary, use a soft clean cloth to clean cabinet of the Sunmaster. Never use any
liquids, acids and/or scourers.

6 FAILURES
The operation of the Sunmaster is controlled and checked by a microprocessor. If an
error occurs, it is detected by the apparatus itself: the red indication LED (diagnostic)
at the front of the cabinet will illuminate.
If the irradiation of the PV-modules is insufficient, the Sunmaster switches off
automatically. When switched off, none of the LED indications will illuminate.
As long as the the red indication LED isnt illuminated, no failure is detected: the
Sunmaster is operating normally. When the red indication LED illuminates, a failure of
the electrical installation or the Sunmaster is detected. The cause of failure is
displayed by means of a combination of one or more illuminating yellow LEDs. Refer
to table 2 for explanation of the error codes.

7 DECOMMISSIONING AND DEMOUNTING

The Sunmaster can only be put out of operation if no power is converted to the public
grid. To put the Sunmaster out of operation, follow the instructions in order of
succession as described below:

7.1

AC switch off
Cut off the AC voltage by switching off the AC distribution switch in the AC distribution
cabinet before decommissioning or demounting the Sunmaster. Check whether both
the red indication LED (diagnostic) and the yellow LED 0% / general fault illuminate
(with the ENS versions the yellow LED 50% / grid quality illuminates as well).
CAREFUL
Always switch off AC voltage before decommissioning or demounting the Sunmaster.

7.2

Disconnection of AC cabling
Depending on the model of the Sunmaster, the AC cabling can be disconnected in two
ways: by means of a Powercon connector (see section 7.2.1) or by removing the AC
cabling from the power board inside the cabinet (refer to section 7.2.2).

7.2.1 Disconnecting AC by means of a Powercon connector

Pull the Powercon connector from the socket by turning the locking ring counter
clockwise simultaneously.

7.2.2 Disconnection of direct AC cabling from the power board

1 Open the connection area at the bottom side of the cabinet. To do so, loosen the
two screws at the bottom side and slide the front cover plate from the cabinet.
2 Loosen the cable glands.
3 Remove the AC wiring from the terminal blocks (L, N en PE) by opening the spring
cage clamps with an insulated 4mm flat blade screwdriver (see figure 1).

7.3

Switching off DC voltage

Switch off the external DC switch, if such is applied in the installation. Use extra
caution and pay careful attention while removing the DC (solar) cabling if no external
DC switch is applied.

7.4

Disconnection of DC (solar) cabling

Depending on the model of the Sunmaster, the DC cabling can be disconnected in two
ways: either by removing the MultiContact connectors (refer to section 7.4.1 and figure
2) or by disconnecting the wiring directly from the spring-cage terminal blocks on the
power board inside the cabinet (refer to section 7.4.2 and figure 3).

7.4.1 Disconnecting DC cabling by means of MultiContact connectors

MultiContact connection material is touch proof. Remove the MultiContact connectors
one by one from the Sunmaster.

Sunmaster QS1200 - QS2000 / v 1.0 / EN

7.4.2 Disconnecting DC cabling directly from the power board

WARNING!
Hazardous voltages are present on the DC-cabling.
Therefore the DC-cables must be disconnected and isolated one by one.
The voltages present on the DC-cabling of the PV modules are high (up to 450 VDC)
and cannot be switched off. The voltages on the DC side of the system are floating
(class II): there is no connection to ground. This means that when one of the string
connections (plus or minus) touched accidentally, this will not directly lead to
personnel harm or accidents. However, this should be avoided in any case! Short
circuiting of the of the plus (+) and minus () connections must be avoided at any cost
Follow in detail all steps in order of succession as described below:
1 Open the connection area at the bottom side of the cabinet. To do so, loosen the
two screws at the bottom side and slide the front cover plate from the cabinet.
2 Open the orange lids of both DC separators (part [4] in figure 3).
3 Remove the DC-cable at the leftmost position from the terminal block by opening
the spring cage clamps with an insulated 4mm flat blade screwdriver (see figure 1)
4 Isolate the core of the wires with insulating tape.
5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 to remove all other DC-cables by removing and isolating
each cable one by one.

7.5

Transportation
Always use the original package for transportation.

7.6

Re-installation
To re-install the Sunmaster, follow the instructions as described in chapter 3.
