Patent:

A patent is an exclusive right granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or assignee for a limited
period of time in exchange of a detailed public disclosure of an invention that is a solution to a
specific technological problem and is a product or process. A patent is essentially a limited
monopoly whereby the patent holder is granted the exclusive right to make, use and sell the
patent holder is innovation for a limited time. Granting exclusive right to the inventor is intended
to encourage the investment of time and resources into the development of new and useful
discoveries.
The issue of importance here is the utility patent. Many countries including The US Patent and
Trademark Office (USPTO) issues several different kinds of patent documents offering different
kinds of protection and covering different types of subject matter. Approximately 90% of the
patent documents issued by the USPTO in recent years have been utility patents, also referred to
as patents for innovation. Utility patent is issued for the invention of a new and useful process,
machine, manufacture or composition of a matter or a new and useful improvement thereof, it
generally permits its owner from making, using or selling the invention for a period of time,
generally up to twenty years from the date of issuance of patent application.
Title of Invention:
As per the group project work assigned to patent any product or process belonging to Nepal and
having some usefulness and/or utility, our group has chosen Karuwa, a copper made water
vessel with carvings outside. Along with beautiful natural resources, Nepal has diverse culture,
ethnicity, traditions and practices that has continues to attract the attention of tourists from past
to present. The diverse culture, systems and tradition has given rise to many unique tools and
accessories that has a huge cultural and historical importance. One of them is the Karuwa that is
generally used in Newari clans used to drink water. Though, Karuwa is made up of copper, brass,
other alloys, silver and sometimes gold as well, our concern here is to patent the Karuwa made
from copper.
Inventors:
The inventors of the Karuwa mentioned above are Rajani Acharya, Rejina Singh, Rabindra
Rajbhandari, Roshan Budhathoki, Rajan Ghimire, Sujan Marahatta and Krishna Prasad
Chapagain.
Abstract:
Being an important utensil, Karuwa has a huge cultural as well as health importance. The motive
here is to manufacture pure copper made Karuwa with carvings on the surface that provides
many health benefits as well as tries to pressure and protect the culture and tradition of Nepal.
For the above purpose, the Karuwa is going to be patented so that no other country could
produce or manufacture the same product and design.
CrossReference:

Nepal has been the place of origin of the copper made water vessel Karuwa. People have been
making it from ages in a traditional way and there is no known official facility or producer of
Karuwa. Karuwa has been mainly limited to cottage industry in Nepal and that has no guarantee
of purity on it. Our product will have a full fledged producing facility with guarantee of pure
copper and important carvings on the surface that would also help to spread Nepal and Neapli
products in the international market.
Field of Invention:
Advanced copper utensils and antiques
Background of Invention:
The need and idea of producing pure copper made Karuwa arose as it has high cultural and
health importance. For ages, Karuwa and many other dishes despite of having their own benefits
have either left out, neglected or have been patented by other countries. This manufacturing and
patenting must be a point of start to show that Nepal has also its own unique products with
countless benefits.
Summary of the Invention:
The Nepal made copper made Karuwa has many scientifically proved benefits as people have
used this metal from ages due to its advantages. This Karuwa is not only just a product but also
an identity of Nepal. People must enjoy the benefits of this product and at the same time thank
Nepal for producing such products.
Detailed Description of the invention process:
The plan is to establish a high tech, full facilities and
advanced factory that can purify copper and
manufacturing Karuwa. Our focuses here is to patent the
process and designs of the Karuwa.
Despite of having many metal mines in our country, it
is ironic to say that we dont have been able to extract
any of them. So, in the beginning stage, we plan to
import raw copper form India to which we depend on
about 66% of our imports. The copper will be their
brought to the factory where purifying of copper will
take place with advanced technology
The pure copper will be then molded and given appropriate shapes and sizes and carvings will be
given on the surface in the factory. The bottom part will have an inscription of Made in Nepal.
The product will be then sent to market with reasonable prices. We hope the vessel produces will
not only give benefits to the people but it will be made so attractive that people can buy it for
antique pieces as well and will also help to spread the name and fame of the country.

In the second stage, when the business runs successfully, we plan to extract copper ores from our
country sustainably with permission from the government so that our country will have
something that we dont have to depend on others for raw materials.
There are many benefits of copper made water vessels. When most of the developing countries
are generally plagues by many diseases that occur and transfer from impure water, Ayurveda
recommends the most effective way of keeping water clean is by storing in a copper vessel. We
have been believing that the water stored in copper vessel remains cold for long time in Nepal.
Copper holds potential to provide microbial safe drinking water as it kills the bacteria present in
the water and is proven by researches. Furthermore, water stored in copper vessels stimulates
brain, promotes bone strength, aids in digestion, regulates body fat, acts as anti carcinogenic,
regulates functioning of thyroid gland, prevents joint pain, aids in hemoglobin synthesis,
maintains acid alkaline balance in body, helps in improving fertility and conception, prevents
white patches on skin, helps in healing of internal wounds. The most important thing is it carries
the identity of Nepal with it.
The copper made Karuwa will be processed with a unique, never used high tech and advanced
procedures both to purify copper and manufacture it. The carvings will be those never used
before and having national and cultural importance.
