FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Thus , civil engineers find they are the custodians of an impressive legacy , while the concerns
emerge about the future directions that will take . They know they have to take more risks . They
know they have to show more leadership. They know they have to control their own destiny ,
rather than let events dominate them . The Summit on the Future of Civil Engineering in 2025
represented a bold step in the path towards this new future. Participants were asked : What will
the world of civil engineering in 20 years ? What role civil engineers aspire to play in this
radically different world ? Definitely looking forward, into the unknown, presents a considerable
risk . It is possible that some realities of the future will be warned and that some aspects of vision
revealed last a mirage.
But the visionaries have thrown his glove. A diverse group of experts met at the summit to look
beyond the strategic issues of the present, in order to place their poles indicators showing what
the civil engineering profession should have reached in 2025.

VIEW
The Summit produced a series of visions aspirational stimulated
by dreams of participating in the world of 2025. Vision
resulting aggregate is:
With the mandate of society to create a sustainable world and enhance the overall quality of life,
civil engineers serve competently, collaboratively, and ethically
as teachers:

planners, designers , builders and operators
economic and social engine of society : the average
built environment ;
custodians of the natural environment and its resources;
innovators and integrators of ideas and technology in
public , private and academic sectors;
managers of risks and uncertainties caused by
natural events, accidents and other threats; and
leaders in discussions and decisions that shape policy
environmental and public infrastructure . With the mandate of society to create a

civilians serve competently , collaboratively , and ethically
as teachers :

The civil engineer has knowledge . Understand the theories, principles
and / or fundamentals :
Mathematics , physics, chemistry , biology, mechanics and materials,

based on data and knowledge and statistical

The civil engineer has many different skills. The civil engineer embraces a
set of attitudes that complement their knowledge and skills and facilitate
effective professional practice within the sector, teaching and government.

civil engineers provide solutions in order to benefit society through the
reduction and control of pollution of air, soil and water; analysis , design and
construction needed to meet social needs of the most varied nature
infrastructure. Also have the responsibility for repair and replacement of
damaged or obsolete works infrastructure; planning of transportation
systems in large cities ; reduction and control of the devastating effects
caused by floods, storms and earthquakes.

Civil engineers have the opportunity to bring about positive changes in our
society security , health and productivity. They are able to plan, design and
promote the construction , operation and maintenance of many of those
enablers of modern life in its various aspects, they comprising both private
and public, and can vary widely in their nature and magnitude , ranging from
slender footbridge linking the banks of a canal ditch modest until the
colossal dam project on the Middle Paran .
