TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 17, 2014

From the Desk of Fr. Underwood:

Religious Education is Important! With grades K-5
Religious Education classes beginning on August 27th
and 6-8th grade classes starting September 7th, our
attention is directed to the importance of educating our
young people in the faith. We hand on to them so
much when we form them to be disciples of Jesus
Christ and share the tenets of the faith. So often have I
talked with adults who have been timid in sharing the
faith, because they are not confident that they know much themselves.
Handing on our faith requires that we have something to hand on - by
knowing our faith, setting a fine example by being 100% dedicated to
Mass and the Sacraments, and by praying with and for our children. There
are so many opportunities to nourish our faith. Watch the bulletin as we
want to supplement your own study and faith practice with quality
programs and activities to help you become a better disciple of Christ.
Parish Picnic - Im really looking forward to our parish picnic coming up on
September 13th. We are trying to plan some unique and fun events, so
reserve the date on your calendar. Activities will take place from
3:00-9:00pm, taking a break of course for the 5:00pm Mass (Confessions will
be heard still at 4:00pm in case you have too much fun). Bring your families!
It will be a wonderful time for our St. Lawrence parish family.
Conventual Franciscan Friars: This weekend is our annual mission appeal.
We welcome a representative from our beloved Franciscan Friars. Please be
generous and support their ongoing work throughout the world. A second
collection will take place at all Masses this weekend. If you are not prepared
to make a contribution this weekend, please take one of the contribution
envelopes and return it through the regular collection next weekend.
How to Reach a Priest in Times of Emergency! If you have a loved one
in the hospital, a medical emergency, or a significant family crisis and
need to reach a priest when the office is not open, please call the parish
office and the automated telephone system will direct you to our
emergency contact information. We are happy to be with each of our
parishioners in times of need. Please let us know how we can help!

Uniting in Heart, Pastoral Planning for the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana
More people are filling out the Uniting in Heart, Pastoral Planning for
the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana survey which Bishop Doherty asked
us to complete. To date 1,444 have been filled out diocesan wide.
Please take time to complete a General Survey or one that is appropriate
to your situation. For instance, if you are in high school, take the high
school survey, etc.
Go to www.dol-in.org and click the button which will lead you to the
surveys. Choose the most appropriate for your use. Most people will be
using the General Survey.
If you do not have access to a computer please take a survey from the back
of Church and return it next week so someone can input your information. If
you know people who do not regularly participate in Church, and consider
themselves Catholic, please feel free to take yellow surveys from the back
of Church and invite them to participate so the Bishop can hear their voices
and incorporate the needs he hears into the pastoral plan.

RCIA - Precatechumenate or Inquiry
Conversion is a gradual process or a faith
journey. The first step in this journey is the
inquiry stage. This period may last a long
time. One needs to be aware that gradual conversion cannot
be measured in earth time, but in God's time. The aim of
this period is to awaken one's faith. It is characterized by:
Sharing stories about the Catholic faith.
Answering questions about why Catholics do the things
they do.
Proclaiming the message of salvation through the Word.
Introduction into parish life.
Building trust and community.
Once God's time has been fulfilled and the inquirer is ready to
take the first step in the process of conversion, they will be
invited to participate in The Rite of Acceptance into the Order
of Catechumens. Beginning Sunday, September 7
th
Inquiry
will meet every Sunday at 9:30am in the St. Clare room at the
Parish Office Bldg. We would love for you to join us. You
must attend inquiry sessions before you can be invited to
participate in the Rite of Acceptance on October 26
th
at the
9:30am Mass. RCIA will begin meeting on Wednesday
nights starting September 10
th
from 7:00-8:30 pm in the
Social Hall. If you have questions please call the Parish
Office or Jim & Connie at 447-2939.
Habitat ReStore "Donation Bounty Hunter Program"
which helps everyone involved, ends Labor Day. The
people donating the selected items do not need to be
Parishioners of St. Lawrence but can be friends or
relatives (including businesses). It is important that a
receipt is made out and credit is given to St. Lawrence
toward their sponsorship goal of $9,500! Please let
everyone you know be aware of this opportunity. This is
a great way to make a contribution without writing a
check. We have only 2 weeks left to take advantage of
this great opportunity! If you have any questions
or comments, please contact the St. Lawrence
Volunteer Coordinator, George Kochert, at 538-3863 or
[email protected]. Flyers for this Program are
located at the church entrances.

sacrament. There is a meeting today at 3:00pm in the Social Hall
