Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
- - -

1(a). Classify the machine foundations according to IS Code with neat sketches.
(b). Discuss the values of permissible amplitudes and Permissible bearing pressures as
per I.S Code for the foundations of different types of machines.

2(a). Explain the magnification factor and Critical damping with neat sketches.
(b). Derive an expression for maximum amplitude in the case of SDOF of free
vibration without damping.

3(a). Explain the Barkans analysis for natural frequency of foundation soil system.
(b). Determine the coefficient of uniform compression, if a vibration test on a block
1m x 1m x 1m gave a resonance frequency of 30 Hz in the vertical direction. The
mass of the oscillator used was 60 kg. The mass density of the test block material
is 2400 kg/m
3
. Use the Barkans approach.

4(a). Why dynamic soil properties are evaluated? List the various laboratory and field
tests for dynamic soil properties.
(b). A block vibration test was performed on a block made up of M
15
grade concrete of
size 1m x 1m x 1m using vertical excitation. The unit weight of concrete is 24
kN/m
3
. The results of the test are as follows:

Determine the coefficient of elastic uniform compression and the damping ratio.
Also, determine the coefficient of elastic uniform compression if the foundation
base area is 9m
2
.

5(a). What are the assumptions in Pauws Analogy? Explain the bulb of pressure
concept of estimation of apparent soil mass.
(b). A foundation of base area 3m x 3m is laid at 1.5m below the ground level. If the
amplitude of vibration is 0.02 mm, apply the reduction factor for embedment and
determine the likely amplitude as per the Pauws Analogy.

6. What are the salient points in elastic half space theory? Explain the Reisners
solution and its limitations for footings subjected to vertical vibrations.

7. Explain the design aspects of impact type of machines as per the IS Code with
neat sketches.

8(a). Explain the active and passive isolation methods in machine foundations.
(b). Discuss the properties of rubber and cork as isolation materials.
