Early Life: Farrokh (Freddie) Bulsara, grew up in Stone Town,
Zanzibar, East Africa. He later moved to the Bombay Presidency in
British India. At the age of seven he started taking piano lessons. When he was eight, he was sent to study at St Peters School, a British style boarding school for boys. At this school is where he began to call himself Freddie. His most influential music figure of that time was Bollywood singer Lata Mangeshkar. He had this large habit to copy what he heard on radio and try it on the piano. At the age of 17, he and his family fled to Britain because of the Zanzibar revolution where thousand of Arabs were killed.
Queen: Queen is a British rock band formed in the 70s. Even those who dont know who they are, would know their songs like We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and Somebody To Love. The band consists of Freddie Mercury (Vocals), Roger Taylor (Drums), Brain May (Guitar) and John Deacon (Bass guitar). Queen was a big hit in their golden era, getting platinum records on most of their singles but then music changed and punk rock started to be in fashion, so Queen tried to do that and still they were still extremely popular, had amazing talent and worked hard. They even got roles at music festivals, performing for royals and playing with other famous rockers and huge music stars like The Eagles or Elton John. They had 15 studio albums until Freddie Mercurys death. They still tour but with other stars doing the vocals. Queen are one of the best British bands of the past century and have made some classic hits that people still listen to today. Popular Members: Brian May is the lead guitarist for Queen. May and Mercury were the people who wrote the majority of songs on the albums produced by Queen. May was given Freddie Mercurys piano as a part of his will. May and Roger are the only members to still be playing for Queen. May has three children; Jimmy, Emily Ruth and Louisa. Brian is currently 65.
Roger: Before Queen, Roger and Brian were part of a band called Smile. they only lasted two years (1968-1970/when Queen started). even though they only had nine songs after the death of Mercury, they reunited with Tim Staffel returning as his former roll as Smiles lead vocals. while still in Queen, Taylor created his own solo career. he has had five solo albums (and two live tours), which one of those will be coming out this year. Taylor has five children; Tiger Lilly, Rory Eleanor, Rufus Tiger, Felix Luther and Lola Daisy May.
Solo Career: Freddie released two off queen albums and some extra singles, both with not as much success as his Queen albums. His first album debuted in the top UK album charts. The two albums he made were Mr Bad Guy (1985) and Barcelona (1988). Mr Bad Guy reached the top ten UK album charts and a remix of Living On My Own reached number one in the top single charts. His second album, Barcelona, was a mix of pop and opera but the critics didnt know what to make of the album. They said it was the most bizarre CD of the year. In 1981-1983, Mercury recorded a few tracks with Michael Jackson including a demo of "State of Shock", "Victory" and "There Must Be More to Life Than This. None of these demos were ever released. Jackson then recorded State of Shock with Mick Jagger on Jacksons album Victory. In response, Freddie then recorded There Must Be More To Life Than This solo.
Death: Freddie died on November 24 1991 because of AIDS. He was only 45. He really went out in style because of his last live performance, over 300,000 people attended. He played over 700 live performances with Queen. Mercury wrote 10 of the 17 songs on their Greatest Hits album, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen and Somebody to love. Queen were the first to start call and response at live performances. Queens Greatest Hits album was the best selling album of all time in the UK.
Tribute: The tribute concert was on Easter Monday, 20 th April 1992 at Wembley Stadium, London. This concert had an international audience of up to 1 billion viewers. Famous singers of the time sung great hits by Queen, backed by Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor . After watching most of the music sung by famous artists like David Bowie and George Michael, I thought George Michaels version of Somebody To Love was the best sung hit out of all the others. He was also given a tribute statue (the one in the picture) of the famous fist pump he did while in concert.
Queen Influence: Queen have influenced many popular bands and singers such as: Anthrax Nirvana Def Leppard Dream Theatre Extreme Trivium Foo Fighters Franz Ferdinand George Michael Green Day Guns N' Roses Iron Maiden Journey Kansas Katy Perry Keane Lady Gaga Manic Street Preachers Meat Loaf Metallica Mika Muse Mtley Cre My Chemical Romance Panic! at the Disco Queensrche Van Halen Radiohead Robbie Williams Trent Reznor Steve Vai Sum 41 Styx Midge Ure The Flaming Lips The Killers The Smashing Pumpkins
