IS 3282 Networking Essentials BBA-IT/BS Fall 2010

This is a three-hour examination and consists of review questions only. You may attempt not more than eight review questions.
Q. 1 Q.2 Q.3 Compare a Client / Server network with a peer-to-peer network, with suitable examples. List the steps in configuring an Ethernet adapter on a single computer. Compare the implications of using connection-oriented communication over connection- less communication. Describe the working of a Token-Ring network, from initialization phase to data delivery. State appropriate situations for media selection between twisted-pair- cable and wireless. Situational elements include Cost, Distance limitations and Number of nodes. What are the two alternatives to client-server computing? Briefly discuss each one of them. You have 2 clients with Ethernet NIC that are configured the same in every detail, and either one can operate on the network without any problem when the other is powered off. When both clients are powered on, however, both client computers experience network problems. What may be wrong in this situation? How can you solve this problem? You must ensure that the failure of any one server on your network will not make vital data inaccessible. Hw will you do that? You can dial out of your network, but no one can dial in and connect to your network. What might be wrong? How can you fix it? Enlist various multiplexing techniques with examples. State Pros and! Cons of Packet Switching. Justify your answer. Differentiate between viruses, worms and Trojan horses.
