KIRK has a great interest in the role that well made buildings play in the communities and environments they intend to serve. With each project we work to make evocative places and buildings that are memorable and clearly legible in terms of how they are spatially organised and constructed. The practice has a deep passion for developing construction methods and material knowledge to produce unique buildings that respond directly to each client, brief and circumstance. KIRKs approach to client briefs is not only responsive but also pro-active. The diversity of projects within the practice has developed a robust design sensibility and process. Each project has the same team leader for all phases which ensures the continual refinement of ideas and building quality and a single point of contact for the client. It is through our efforts in the planning process, attention to detail and an intimate approach during construction that fine architecture is made at every scale. Current and recent projects range in values from $0.2M to $1B. The diversity of projects include furniture, landscape, single residences, interior fitouts, university and school buildings, master planning, infrastructure and urban design. KIRK utilises 3D CAD & BIM technology in each project to enable better outcomes through visualisation of our designs to clients, integration of building services and detailed design resolution. With an oxidised steel shell wrapping around a series of community gathering spaces, Richard Kirk has marked the importance of place while re-asserting the poetry of cast-of materials
Steel Profile 114 April 2013
The building provides the new neighbourhood with a vibrant, active community hub within a typically Australian landscape setting. Situated near regenerated bushland used as an unregulated dumping ground for vehicles and other refuse, the centre redefines and redeems this relationship to the landscape in built form. The building addresses its street frontage without being sited on the street, with its facade line modified to incorporate the rare remaining trees on site. This in turn helps with the building programme of a mixed use cultural centre incorporating allied health, offices, meeting spaces, retail and community halls. The heart of the scheme is a large open covered space, which forms a gateway on the axis from the new commercial centre of Fitzgibbon to the bushland tracks and trails to the North. This gateway acts as a starting and finishing point for the trails, with essential amenities and a retail outlet.

AEB establishes a new benchmark for sustainability and explores new possibilities for teaching and learning spaces in engineering disciplines.
The vision for the project is to create a building to celebrate, collaborate, create, learn, innovate and sustain, all within an integrated engineering landscape. The project is designed to stimulate innovation, education and awareness of advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The structure of the building is as open as possible, to allow a high level of visibility of processes and equipment to visitors and staff alike. AEB is a 5 Star Green Star certified building. This was achieved through the use of simple systems, including a central atrium to introduce tempered air and light into the building, highly efficient faades, mixed mode ventilation, night purging and excellent daylight levels.

CIP2 is connected to the broader university and arts community via new digital technologies to facilitate the creation of an internationally networked hub of creative enterprise and cultural experience.
KIRKs strategic placement of the Creative Industries building was the critical element in the master plan. The buildings key function as the new home for the creative disciplines was an opportunity to make a landmark facility for both University and community. The co-location of diverse creative disciplines provided an opportunity for the building to have a rich expression. Most of the studio spaces have access to natural light and ventilation, leading to a unique building form with degrees of visual transparency not normally associated with acoustically driven spaces. The openness of the building, for a range of diverse functions, yielded variable facade edge conditions that allow light and ventilation to penetrate deep into the plan. KIRKs extensive experience with acoustic separation and structural isolation detailing is leveraged to stack the double height studio volumes vertically, maximising ground floor public and exhibition areas and provide transparency (through extensive glazing) into the dynamic dance, movement and music studios. The CIP2 project is targeting a 5 star Green Star As-built rating.

KIRK were invited to develop a concept for the Alice Street Pedestrian Bridge as a part of the City Centre Master Plan Transformative Areas project. The proposed pedestrian bridge creates a destinational link between Brisbanes city centre and neighbouring suburb Kangaroo Point, and provides a green gateway into the CBD. The bridges form is developed from the structural solution, which simply and clearly expresses the flow of internal forces through its static system. The languid curves of the river provide a framework for the geometry of the bridge. The double
curve aligns the Alice-Edward Street intersection with Thornton Street, Kangaroo Point, and creates an elegant gesture across the river. The bridge contributes to an environment that increases the viability of a full range of sustainable travel choices in the CBD and improves integration with existing and planned public transport services. Passing of the day and seasons are powerful analogies for remembrance and the memorials follow this notion, formed by the passage of the sun and the passing of time as recorded by the suns position.
The sun animates the memorials at different times of the day and year activating the space and marking the ground around, to create a differing emotive experience depending upon the event that is memorialised. The memorials design avoids overt symbolism, narrative or the figurative, contemplated instead as enduring symbols of loss, separation and sacrifice. The intention is for the memorials to appear as though they have always been on the site, where they have evolved into their current form. They are deliberately neutral and abstract to allow for multiple meanings as well as creating an inherent and unique quality of commemoration specific to the events and impact on Australia in the past and into the future.
Cuts and slices are made through the blocks using the suns location on key dates and times of the important events during the two World Wars. It is the process of carving/cutting removal of the form of the memorials that emulates the violence and the tragedy of the losses and separation. The use of a simply detailed single material for the memorials Australian granite means the representation of the idea remains pure, powerful and enduring across the generations. The plan is organised to address views of the city to the North-East and Mt Coot-tha to the South-West. The resulting footprint provides private courtyards and terraces adjacent to main living spaces.
Rosalie Residence is located in one of Brisbanes established inner city suburbs. The five-bedroom family home sits on a hillside among the peaks and gullies that characterise the suburb of Paddington. The house rises from a solid base as a 3-storey lightweight structure. The exterior is predominantly recycled Tallowwood weatherboard and pre-weathered zinc cladding generating a reinterpretation of the timber and tin tradition prevalent in the area. Sun-shading and privacy is achieved with operable timber screens and external venetian blinds that sit in front of bespoke window joinery. The interior is an ensemble of Red Mahogany flooring and Jarrah panelling, set against white walls and ceilings. Tinbeerwah Residence is a semi-rural retreat located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for an international client. The design continues KIRKs commitment to simplicity of form and planning. Great emphasis was placed on the material qualities of the house, with a shared commitment between Client and Architect to produce a building that will age and mature over time. The materiality of the dwelling is defined by an exterior and interior skin. The external zinc cladding acts as a robust barrier to the elements, wrapping and folding to protect the inner envelope generally made of bespoke timbers employed
as facade systems and cladding layers. The internal skin is comprised of a number of timbers selected for their durability and colour. The timber is tailored like bespoke joinery to the specific requirements of each space and treated in a similar manner whether internal or external. The exterior cladding is largely custom profile Western Red Cedar which continues seamlessly into the interior. Western Red Cedar is sustainable and durable making it suitable for the environment of the Sunshine Coast. The distinguishing feature of the timber is its ability to weather naturally to reach a silver colour.
Siting of the residence has been carefully considered to respond to environmental conditions and control the transition from the designed landscape of the residence to the natural bushland beyond.

BRISBANE, AUStRALIA
The dwelling adopts a courtyard typology with two pavilions linked by a large double height stairwell and courtyard. The form is conceptualised as an object carved from a solid with the courtyard providing a protective volume and enabling cross-ventilation to the spaces organised around its perimeter.
Located on the Bulimba Reach of the Brisbane River, Arbour House is a study in siting and intricate articulation to yield views and landscape connections. The long 13 meter wide site is located between two key public spaces, a historic fig tree arbour and a public river boardwalk. Unlike the riverfront houses adjacent, the dwelling is sited a respectful distance from the rivers edge, preserving an 80 year old Poinciana tree and public views from the boardwalk to the adjoining heritage listed dwelling. The large setback creates a platform for a private garden under the shade of the Poinciana tree. The level of the platform and the height of the tree and arbour established two datums for the setout of public and private spaces of the dwelling. The public riverfront living levels are adjacent to this space whilst the rear living spaces are elevated to look into the canopy of the arbour. The private bedroom spaces of the upper level are raised again to a height that affords views of the tree canopy and river, but creates privacy from the river boardwalk.

The house is located on a south facing ravine adjacent to one Brisbanes oldest ridgeline roads. The steepness of the site has resulted in a verdant and mature landscape, creating the opportunity to place the house within a rich landscape environment.
As a result of the site and the desire to connect to an outdoor ground plane the house adopts two distinct identities the north (landscape) and east (street) is a diminutive floating single level volume hovering over fine steel pins the south and west (distant views) the vertical and monumental character is revealed of the tall three level residence. To the North and East, the living level embraces the landscape as the upper level hovers over the ground plane as a protective canopy. In these areas where the building is more intimate, the materials and detailing are deliberately fine and diminutive.
To integrate the landscape with the living spaces on the middle level, the external openings are of a significant scale so that the internal floor plate opens up completely to the outdoor spaces that consist of a series of floating platforms of constructed ground planes of timber decking or turf. In response to the dominance of the landscape, the house is entirely clad in timber and uses timber glazed faade systems where each species is selected to age in response to its orientation and weathering.
