Q1) Question related to frequency distribution, diagrams, and group summary statistics The tables given below are derived from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of British Adults, 20002001. It relates to a random sample of adults aged 19 64 in private households in mainland Britain. Age (years) 19 24 25 34 35 54 55 64 Total Number of men 61 160 393 152 766 Number of women 78 211 486 183 958

Number of men 248 274 244

Number of women 326 350 282

Smoking habit Current Smoker

Number of men 236

Number of women 313

a) Make frequency distribution tables and calculate the group summary statistics. Show each step of calculation. (5+5) b) Write a report comparing the representation of men and women within the various categories in this achieved sample (age distribution, region distribution, and smoking habit). Your report should include diagrams and summary statistics to support your conclusions. (6+6)

Q2) Question related to dot plot and box plot A survey of school children has been conducted. One of the questions was "How long did you spend watching television after school yesterday? Give your answer to the nearest quarter of an hour". Some computer output relating to the responses that were given to this question by a random sample of boys and girls aged 1516 is given below. X-axis is in hour.
No. of hours N Mean SE Mean StDev Minimum Q1 Median Q3 Maximum

Boys Girls

97 1.799 0.164 92 1.473 0.126

1.613 0.000 0.500 1.205 0.000 0.500

1.250 2.875 6.250 1.250 2.000 5.500

a) The arithmetic mean, the median and the mode are three common measures of location of a distribution. Write sentences to explain what they are to someone who is not familiar with these terms. You should incorporate values from the output and diagram shown above into your explanations. (6) b) What advantages do you think dot-plots have over histograms in this example? ( 2)

c) Use the information given in the output to draw side-by-side box and whisker plots and comment briefly on the main features that they show like skewness and outlier. (6) 2

Q3) Question related to stem and leaf lot

The data given below shows the number of people affected by a critical disease in 50 cities.
1 8 28 50 79 1 9 33 50 82 2 9 36 52 87 3 14 36 57 88 3 14 37 57 93 4 17 38 61 96 4 21 39 70 99 6 24 42 71 109 7 24 46 73 115 8 27 49 78 160

i) Draw a stem and leaf diagram to display these data. Briefly discuss whether the data appear to be symmetrical or skew. (5)

ii) Compute the median, mean, standard deviation and inter-quartile range.

(4)

iii) State, with reasons, which measure of central location you consider more appropriate for summarizing these data. Interpret the results for this measure and for the corresponding measure of variability (or spread). (5)

Q4) Question related to Box Plot A drug manufacturer wants to compare percentage of dissolve of two similar types of drugs. A sample size of 12 tablets is taken from drug A. For type B drug sample size is 10. The percentage of dissolve after half an hour into dissolution medium in laboratory test results is given below. Type A 5.94 6.22 5.09 6.22 5.37 5.51 4.10 5.51 4.52 4.52 4.10 4.81 Type B 3.92 1.55 2.52 0.96 0.84 5.01 2.20 2.51 2.84 0.96 a) Find the median and quartiles for each type of drug, explaining your method. b) Draw box plot to compare the drugs. c) Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each drug. (3) (2) (2)
